Memo Pad: Posen In Plum ... Rachel Zoe's Dwell-ing ...Bobos In Domino ...
By Sara James and Tina Isaac
December 8, 2005

There are niche magazines, and then there are titles that fall just short of specifying the eye color of their readers. Earlier this year, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists launched one such publication, Plum, to target pregnant women aged 35 and older ??” which, as it turns out, is a rather large group.

Plum, published twice a year and handed out for free at pediatricians' or gynecologists' offices to women fitting its demographic, will guarantee advertisers a rate base of 750,000 in 2006.

The new fall/winter issue, currently available, features eight-and-a-half-months pregnant model Farley Snow on the cover, styled by designer Zac Posen. While Posen technically doesn't make maternity clothes, he used several of his regularly sized pieces on her, including a stretchy green knit dress and a plum-colored evening gown Snow wore backwards to accommodate her belly.

Rachel Zoe's Dwell-ing
Don't accuse Hachette Filipacchi Media of stooping to corporate synergy. Since Hachette owns Elle Decor and Metropolitan Home, one might assume that those would be the only shelter titles to get prominent play in any of the company's other magazines. Not so.

In the January issue of Elle, stylist Rachel Zoe is shown lounging by her Hollywood Hills pool next to a stack of issues topped by ... Dwell and Domino. (The former is the San Francisco-based home title that won a 2004 general excellence award from the American Society of Magazine Editors; the latter is the shelter title launched by WWD parent Cond?© Nast Publications earlier this year.)

"I had those [issues] from the process of decorating my house," Zoe, who didn't use a decorator, told WWD. "I didn't get any exact ideas from them, it was more general inspiration and proportion." Hachette will be pleased to know that Zoe said she also consulted Elle Decor and Met Home while furbishing her mid-century modern house. Those issues just didn't make it into the photos.

Bobos in Domino
Carolina Herrera Jr. and Allison Sarofim have just joined Domino as contributing editors. Herrera will produce interior stories and contribute ideas for Domino's fashion and beauty coverage. Sarofim, who is a trained chef and sits on the board of several arts institutions, will focus on entertaining and decorating. Additionally, editor in chief Deborah Needleman has promoted style director Sara Ruffin Costello to creative director.

Good Vibrations
When the December issue of Jalouse hit Paris newsstands Friday, it came polybagged with a gift that the publisher believes is a first in the industry: a silver-plated vibrator. "When our marketing director, Olivier Junger, came up with the idea, he cited a statistic he'd found about the U.S. market which claimed that 75 percent of women own one," Marie-Jose Eymere-Jalouse, president of Editions Jalou, explained. "I said yes immediately." She added that, of Jalouse's circulation of 100,000, some 40,000 copies are shrink-wrapped with the freebie and sold at newsstands only. Subscribers will not receive them, said Eymere-Jalouse, "but if they contact us, we will send them one." Batteries not included, of course.
