Memo Pad: Dear Fake Diary
By Jeff Bercovici

Why would Jessica Simpson, who purports to hate the tabloid press, agree to document a week of her life for a celebrity gossip magazine? She didn't, of course, but that's not at all the impression conveyed by In Touch, whose current cover screams "Exclusive: Jessica's Breakup Diary."

The story is a first-person account of the days following the public announcement of her split with husband Nick Lachey. "Am listening to Madonna's new CD a lot," reads one entry. "Spending time with Mom, getting words of wisdom from Dad, support from Ashlee. Family is everything."

According to Simpson's spokesman, however, the singer did not supply any of the material in the "diary," either in writing or in an interview. The spokesman declined further comment, but a different publicist, whose clients are also regularly featured in the weeklies, said the story represented "quite a low" in the none-too-proud annals of celebrity journalism.

Magazines 24/7 Keynote Battelle: Magazines Are a ???Content-Driven Model???
By Mike Shields

Magazines need to heed the lessons of successful Internet brands and adapt their Web sites accordingly, or risk getting swept away by the digital media revolution.

That was essentially the message of speakers at Thursday's Magazine Publishers of America conference in New York, Magazines 24/7, Leveraging Consumer Magazine Brands in the Digital Age, which addressed the strategies magazines are employing to grow their brands in an increasingly complicated media landscape.

Keynote speaker John Battelle, the former publisher of The Industry Standard and the author of the Google-chronicling book The Search, implored magazines to eschew a print-focused strategy, while also embracing search engine marketing and user-generated content.

Several exciting new Media Christmas developments!

The New Yorker is, in so many ways, no Village Voice, but, despite the Eustace Tilly crowd's appalling lack of topless dancing and faux cocaine, we did score one delectable tip from their evening at Pastis last night.

Reports an embedded journalist: ???Philip Roth made an appearance with a twenty-something young lady widely rumored to have been dating Ben Kunkel prior to Mr. Roth's intervention. Mr. Roth and his lady were the subject of much conversation.???

My roommate and I are looking for a third to live in our Sleepy Hollow apartment...yes, we're talking the headless horseman Sleepy Hollow. It's a village within Tarrytown and only a 45 minute train ride into NYC!...ideal if you're working there, or looking to work there. We're both editors at a publishing company in Westchester and looking for someone in our field to live with. The rent is $1300, so split between the three of us it would be approximately $450...an awesome price in westchester. The rent includes heat and hot water but not electric and cable...etc. If you're interested, email me at amarano82@yahoo.com. oh ps....catlovers only...PLEASE!
