CELEBRITY SLOWDOWN: The holiday season is turning out to be not so jolly for the celebrity weeklies. Newsstand sales of People, Us Weekly, In Touch and Star all are down in the fourth quarter from their previous year-to-date average, according to several industry sources. Us has seen the steepest drop-off, with fourth-quarter sales running about 15 percent below its January-through-September average. People is down about 9 percent; Star, 8 percent, and In Touch, 5 percent, said sources. (People, Us and In Touch are all on pace to report a year-over-year increase for the second half as a whole, however; Star will be slightly down.)

It's not unusual for magazines sold at checkout to experience a slowdown toward the end of the year, as holiday merchandise takes over front-end retail space. But category insiders see additional factors at work here, including overcrowding (three new magazines have entered the field in the past 13 months) and reader fatigue. Then there is the element of luck: While the first half of 2005 delivered up the Brad Pitt-Jennifer Aniston-Angelina Jolie love triangle, the second half has failed to yield a comparable bonanza. Of the new magazines, only Life & Style has climbed past the half-million mark. OK has claimed newsstand sales of 250,000 to 275,000, but a competing publisher's estimates put its average through October at less than 150,000.

SAVED SEAT: David Rock's quixotic campaign to take over Peter Armour's seat on the Audit Bureau of Circulations' board has come up short. At ABC's annual meeting, held in New York Monday, Armour, senior vice president of consumer marketing affairs at Cond?© Nast Publications (parent of WWD), defeated Rock, director of online and partnerships at Ziff Davis, in board elections, securing another two-year term. (The meeting was supposed to take place last month in Miami, but Hurricane Wilma forced a change in venue.)

'Pinch' Gets A Punch
By Keith J. Kelly

http://www.nypost.com/business/59551.htm

For the second time in five days, staffers at The New York Times were slammed by a major magazine article critical of the paper's botched handling of the Judy Miller affair and of the leadership of Publisher Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger Jr.

"People are pretty shell-shocked," said one editor, who said the newsroom has grown weary of its own role in an ongoing story and is critical of Sulzberger's direction.

"There's a sense that The New Yorker piece is fairly accurate, that Pinch is tone deaf and not the brightest bulb," said the insider, speaking about Ken Auletta's piece in the current edition of The New Yorker.

With 02138, He'll Have Elite Coverage

By Alex Beam

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/living/articles/2005/12/13/with_02138_hell_have_elite_coverage/

Even as he is dismantling one magazine in Boston -- The Atlantic -- publisher David Bradley is building another publication in its place: the glossy Harvard fanzine 02138. A handful of 02138 staffers have established a beachhead at The Atlantic's offices on North Washington Street, where the 30 or so employees who will not be following the venerable monthly to Bradley's hometown of Washington, D.C., are packing their bags.

It's an odd play for Bradley, a management consultant who took over the well-regarded National Journal Group in 1997 and then The Atlantic in 1999. Bradley is something of a high-end education groupie, having attended the Sidwell Friends School, Swarthmore, Georgetown Law School, and the Harvard Business School. He is also involved in creating a new, Episcopal high school in Washington.

In an e-mail Bradley wrote that ''80% of my interest in this investment is my impression of [02138 founder] Bom Kim as extreme talent in the extreme. I think I might invest with him if he were starting a trade magazine on the cauliflower industry. Even so, this is a much more engaging terrain."

With His "Our Business Culture Must Change" Speech Last Week, Jack Klinger??™s Activism as MPA Chairman Has Begun

12/13/05
http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

The Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. president/ceo (since June 1999) has long been outspoken about "reforming" magazine business practices (e.g., making, ?? la tv, audience measurement more important than circulation, along with eliminating rate bases), but since Kliger's October election to a two-year-term as chairman of the Magazine Publishers of America board of directors, his clout has been enhanced.

Speaking last Wednesday (December 6) to the MPA's AdMedia Partners-sponsored Breakfast with a Leaderat New York's University Club, Kliger said that publishers must be "committed to using technology to make it faster, cheaper, and easier to order, to place, and to pay for advertising in magazines." He also acknowledged, as consultant Rebecca McPheters did in min (April 4, 2005), that "it is much more costly and cumbersome for advertisers to do business with magazines and than to advertise in other media."

Miss Seventeen is Atoosa Rubenstein??™s Latest "Crowning" Achievement

12/13/05
http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

On MTV next Monday (December 19) at 10:30 p.m. (Eastern), the editor-in-chief (since July 2003) will culminate the reality series that she created and produced with her selection of Miss Seventeen. Winner, from among 17 (naturally) finalists when the series premiered October 17, gets $25,000 cash, a paid internship at Seventeen, an appearance in a Maybelline ad, and she will be on the cover of the February issue.

Though at times on air, Rubenstein can look as steely as Donald Trump on The Apprentice and the girls can seem as conniving as the castaways on Survivor, she tells min that behind the scenes there was a lot of camaraderie. "These were kids--mostly entering their first year of college--from all backgrounds. Many had not been to New York before, including contestant Brianne Burrowes from Montana. I eliminated her early from the competition, but I was so impressed by her character that I gave her a nonpaying internship at Seventeen. And I have helped other girls get jobs elsewhere."

Time Fires Several Executives in Shakeup
By Seth Sutle

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/051213/time_inc_reorganization.html?.v=3

Magazine publisher Time Inc. fired several of its senior business executives Tuesday, including its former chief financial officer and the president of Time magazine, as part of a sweeping management shakeup.

The revamp was designed to "delayer" the company's corporate management structure, continuing a streamlining effort that began in the summer, Time Inc.'s CEO Ann Moore said in a memo distributed to employees.

The shakeup is also intended to "speed decision making" and "simplify communications and reduce costs," Moore said. "We needed to reallocate our workload and assets in order to invest in areas of higher growth, including online and new launches."

US Ranks 6th Among Countries Jailing Journalists, Report Says
By Katharine Q. Seelye

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/14/business/media/14journalists.html

The United States has tied with Myanmar, the former Burma, for sixth place among countries that are holding the most journalists behind bars, according to a new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Each country is jailing five journalists. The United States is holding four Iraqi journalists in detention centers in Iraq and one Sudanese, a cameraman who works for Al Jazeera, at the United States Naval Base at Guant??namo Bay, Cuba. None of the five have been charged with a specific crime.

This year, China topped the list of countries with the most journalists - 32 - in jail, many of them for activity on the Internet. This is the seventh year in a row in which China has led the list.

SEX AND THE FOODIE: An HBO series about a female newspaper writer with a glamorous beat and a complicated love life. Sound familiar? No, it's not "Sex and the City," but a new show based on the memoirs of Ruth Reichl, Gourmet's editor in chief. HBO disclosed Tuesday it had bought the rights to two of Reichl's memoirs, "Comfort Me With Apples" and "Garlic and Sapphires." She will be an executive producer of the series, along with Cary Brokaw, who produced the network's adaptations of "Angels in America" and "Wit," and Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin, who were part of the team behind "Carnivale."

The books chronicle Reichl's years as a food critic, first for The Los Angeles Times and later for The New York Times, as well as her affairs with Colman Andrews, her boss at the time, and Michael Singer, a television producer whom she eventually married. Reichl hinted she and her co-producers would not mind it at all if their show was seen as the successor to "Sex and the City." "Certainly, the thought has flown around the room," she said.
