Yo, check it

So, one of Ed's favorite blogs, Frinktank.com (written by an Edster!) just got blurbed by SEED magazine's website (see the first posting at scienceg8.com). Shite. Now everyone's going to know about Frink and it won't be Ed's little intellectually superior secret.

Seems as if the NYer and Mr. Frazier aren't Ed's little secrets either. A bunch o' you read (and loved) the hogginess of his wild hog piece. And he was interviewed in Bookstandard last week by Edster Kimberly Maul.

Memo Pad: Eye on Jann??¦Living On??¦No Signal
By Jeff Bercovici and Sara James
12/16/05
http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/103269?page=1

EYE ON JANN: It looks like Jann Wenner will get his shot at reality TV stardom. According to two Wenner Media sources, the Rolling Stone founder has signed a deal with MTV to star in an "Apprentice"-type reality show about aspiring music journalists. The New York Post reported in July that Wenner was in early talks with the network, but the long silence since then made it seem as if the project was stalled. One source said the show will begin production in the spring, with plans to air it next fall. A Wenner Media spokesman declined to comment Thursday, and an MTV spokesman did not return calls.

LIVING ON: Budget Living is on the block. OK, so that's not exactly news. (To date, Meredith, Hachette Filipacchi, American Media, Rodale, Hearst and Newsweek ??” which previously bought Budget Travel from Budget Living founder Don Welsh ??” are said to have all looked at the title and passed.) But now Welsh seems to be becoming a more motivated seller, according to sources with ties to Budget Living. The magazine did not return calls for comment. Meanwhile, staff turnover continues to be an issue for the title, which just went monthly this fall. Photo director Greg Garry is leaving for a job at Weekend, and Real Simple has hired away Budget Living's art director Sung Choi and its deputy editor, Alexa Yablonski, a Time Inc. spokeswoman confirmed.

NO SIGNAL: If the news that Radar magazine was folding after just three issues came as a surprise, it was largely because it had been widely reported that Mort Zuckerman had pledged $25 million in funding. How, media watchers wondered, could a small start-up have burned through so much money so fast?

Page Six: Radar Targets Hit On Backers
By Richard Johnson, With Paula Froelich and Chris Wilson

http://www.nypost.com/gossip/pagesix.htm

DID Radar magazine's financial backers Mort Zuckerman and Jeffrey Epstein pull the plug on the scrappy mag because of pressure from their ultra-wealthy friends? Media insiders claim the glossy was canned after Radar ignored repeated warnings not to write about their patrons' powerful pals.

Over the last year, our sources claim, both Zuckerman and Epstein were besieged by calls from power players distressed over Radar's snarky coverage of them, including Hollywood's Mike Ovitz, American Media honcho David Pecker and secretive supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle. All three personally lobbied Zuckerman and Epstein to quash salacious stories, insiders claim.

One media source tells us: "Ron Burkle's lawyer, Marty Singer, threatened to sue them. And Burkle, who is a major investor in Barnes & Noble, had one of the biggest magazine distributors in the country call to tell them it wouldn't be in their best interest to write about Burkle after they reported a story about him hosting Michael Jackson at his house. Bill Clinton [a friend of Burkle and also Epstein] also called [Epstein] and demanded they not write about him and Jackson. They still did." Singer confirmed the legal threats against Radar to PAGE SIX and suggested there may be more litigation in the works.

Really Over the Radar
By Keith J. Kelly

RADAR, the pop culture magazine, was not the only thing on this week's hit list of Daily News owner Mort Zuckerman. The gossipy Internet site 25hours quietly went dark in recent days as well. Seven full-time staffers and a number of freelance contributors were laid off??¦

Meanwhile, Radar staffers said they felt things were beginning to click with the fourth issue that was about to go to the printers when word came that Mort and partner Jeffrey Epstein were pulling the plug. "He left $1.3 million in ad revenue on the table," said one source.

The January/February issue was to have included an interview with teen twins Lamb and Lynx Gaede, the Nazi-loving white supremacist singers. It had 35 ad pages.

The Atlantic Goes South
By Mark Jurkowitz

Surveying the crowd from the podium at the Harvard Club on Tuesday, The Atlantic Monthly??™s national correspondent, Jim Fallows, set the tone of the event. "None of us can say we are pleased by the occasion of our gathering this evening," he noted. "But we can say we are proud."

The occasion marked the end of an era ??” after 148 years in Boston, the magazine of "the American idea" dreamed up by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Oliver Wendell Holmes had produced its final issue from home. Owner David Bradley is moving The Atlantic Monthly to Washington, DC, where it will have a new editor, a mostly new staff, and, at least potentially, a new direction. (Until a new top editor is chosen, Senior Editor Scott Stossel will manage the magazine.)

At Tuesday night??™s public-farewell party ??” there had been an earlier soir?©e for the staff ??” Managing Editor Cullen Murphy, a 20-year Atlantic veteran who has been at the helm for the past three years, spoke about the connection between the magazine and its birthplace.

The De-???Radar??™-ing: Mort Speaks!
By Gawker Editors
12/16/05
http://www.gawker.com/news/radar/the-deradaring-mort-speaks-143544.php

Can??™t quite figure out why someone would sign on to fund on a nascent magazine then decide to pull that funding after only three issues? Can??™t understand why the investor would say he??™s willing to spend up to $25 million but then give up after only shelling out $10 mill? Unclear on why he blames poor advertising sales for the surrender when people within the mag say the next issue had the best sales of any?

You can learn the answers to all these questions ??” and more! ??” in less than a half-hour when Mort Zuckerman arrives at the Radar office to explain his rationale for pulling the plug.

This email arrived in Radarite inboxes yesterday afternoon:

Merry Christmas, Media Folks!
By Gawker Editors

Oh, those media companies are really full of the Christmas spirit.

Not only did Mort Zuckerman send his Radar staff to the unemployment line in a fit of holiday glee, and not only did Time Inc. celebrate the season by canning 105 folks ??” some long-serving, high-ranking vets ??” but, in fact, today there??™s even more news of Christmas joy in magland.

As Keith Kelly reports, it turns out not all the Time Inc. layoffs were of biz-side folks, as we were initially led to believe:

One large bedroom available for a male or female in their mid-20s. Our three-bedroom apartment (actually a two-family home; there is a second apartment with two guys upstairs, and we're all friends) is located a very short walk from the L Lorimer stop. There is no living room but we do have a great backyard and you'd be living with one female/full-time writer in her 20s plus another female who will be moving out by March 1st. Rent is $650 per month plus cable, DSL, and electric. Prefer non-smokers, laidback, clean, responsible types-we're pretty much workaholics that are never home, but we're friendly.
