***** Apparently editing some of the country's biggest women's magazines hasn't given Bonnie Fuller enough of a platform. Drawing on her experiences at Star, Glamour, Cosmopolitan and elsewhere, she now has written the definitive guide to living the ... fuller life. Succinctly titled "The Joys of Much Too Much: Go for the Big Life ??” The Great Career, The Perfect Guy, and Everything Else You've Ever Wanted (Even If You're Afraid You Don't Have What It Takes)," it will be published in April by Simon and Schuster. WWD got an advance look. With chapter titles such as "The Good Side of Repression" and "Don't Inner-Fixate," the book is a m?©lange of common sense ("Check for spinach in the teeth before leaving [a] restaurant"), pragmatic antifeminism ("Don't talk much about pregnancy in the office, period") and Type-A rationalization ("As far as I'm concerned, hobbies are overrated"). Its central thesis: Women settle for mediocre lives in a misguided quest for "balance." The key to happiness is feeling overwhelmed. "I felt that a lot of the messages that women get today are that they can't do it all, that they have to give up certain parts of their lives in order to have the other parts," Fuller told WWD. "I don't think women should sell themselves short." As for whether there's not something retrograde about coaching women to snare "the perfect man," she said: "I would definitely characterize myself as a feminist." Women's Wear DailyMemo Pad: Jann Again, Off Again December 23, 2005 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/103387 JANN AGAIN, OFF AGAIN: History repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce ??” and that certainly seems to be the case at Wenner Media these days. Two months after driving off Men's Journal editor in chief Michael Caruso and Wenner Books head Bob Wallace, owner Jann Wenner is making life unpleasant for one of his top talents: Janice Min, editor in chief of Us Weekly. Sources familiar with the situation say Wenner, who previously allowed Min a high degree of autonomy in running Us, has in the past few months taken to second-guessing her decisions, criticizing her covers, and generally reasserting his authority over her. "He's completely driving her crazy," said one Wenner Media insider. "It's constant." "Our fear is one of these days she's just going to say, 'I can't deal with this anymore,'" added an employee. 5. Folio JANUARY Jan. 12. In a harbinger of things to come for magazine circ, Gruner + Jahr USA jumbled its numbers in yet another gaffe, and filed suit against its subscription agent, who promptly shot back that the allegations were "a result of G+J's circulation shortcomings." Of course, there was nothing at all ironic about this story. Jan. 27. Ex-Primedia prez Charlie McCurdy and Apprise Media principal bought sports collectible enthusiast publisher Beckett for $20 million, leaving the door open for a niche spin-off title targeting Oscar Gamble fans. FEBRUARY Feb. 9. $690 million later, Primedia concluded its mags and About.com didn??™t match, and sold the web portal it bought in 2000, finally putting to rest ex-CEO Thomas Rogers' vision company. Fittingly, Rogers is now the CEO of Tivo, a company that has built an empire around rewinding history.Feb. 24. The Magazine Publishers of America launched a 3-year, $40 million ad campaign to tout the power of print over television, then promptly began to spend it on t-shirts, badgering TV execs and nifty faux future covers. The BPA, meanwhile, dusted off its event auditing arm. 6. NY Post
"IT was not intended to be a wake," Radar editor Maer Roshan told us of his staff going-away Christmas party Wednesday night at Brite bar in Chelsea. And it wasn't. A merry crowd of about 50 staffers and friends came to drink a lot while bidding farewell to the razor-sharp magazine, which had its plug pulled by Mort Zuckerman after three provocative issues??¦ BRITNEY Spears asked for a fight, and she's going to get one. The pop tart has sued Us Weekly, claiming she and hubby Kevin Federline never screened a sex tape of themselves for their sniggering lawyers, as Us has reported. But the weekly's editrix, Janice Min, has told pals she is ready for a fight ??” and can't wait for the depositions. "Britney is not exactly truthful all the time," said our source. "She thinks if she says something, it is true. But often it's not." MORE ONLINE

BERKSHIRE Hathaway boss Warren Buffett, the second-richest man in the world, ended up as an unheralded hand-holding extra on Time magazine's Persons of the Year photo shoot. The winners of the prestigious honor were Buffett's buddy, Bill Gates, who shared the award with his wife, Melinda, and rock star Bono, for their mega-charged charity work. A photo shoot for the historic cover took place Dec. 16 in Omaha, Neb. ??” Buffett's hometown ??” the day after Bono had finished a U2 concert in the city. Gates, the richest man in the world, who with his wife head the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, flew in from Seattle. Bill Gates and Buffett are old friends, so the Oracle of Omaha dropped in on the photo shoot at a ballroom in a local hotel. The photo shoot ??” two days before the Sunday morning announcement and three days before millions of copies were slated to be mailed or displayed on newsstands ??” was the latest ever shot for the banner issue. "There was some anxiety," said Time Managing Editor Jim Kelly.

Magazines like to brag that they enjoy a special, intimate relationship with their readers. Now, I love touchy-feely marketing as much as the next guy, but I never quite bought into the publishing industry's brand of self-serving blather. Then I attended an unorthodox and inventive focus group hosted by Entertainment Weekly - and got religion. A property of Time Warner ( TWX17.70, +0.12, +0.7%) , EW asked 12 of its most dedicated subscribers -- seven men and five women who live in the New York metropolitan area -- to refrain from reading the magazine and its Web site throughout November. EW followed it up by inviting them to sit on a panel and discuss their lonely, wretched, EW-less existence at a dinner Dec. 14. Suffice to say, I have seen the light! Gadzooks! Yes, brothers and sisters, magazines really do matter! MORE ONLINE 9. Slate
The New York real-estate boom is claiming a different kind of casualty, according to an article in Sunday's New York Times. Keying off a new report issued by the Center for an Urban Future, Jennifer Steinhauer noted that, thanks to high housing prices, many of the creative types who work in Manhattan-centered fields like advertising, publishing, and the arts are being priced out of the city. This, presumably, could damage New York in the long run, since it's an article of faith among nouveau-urban thinkers that the creative classes are a huge economic advantage, as the author Richard Florida has persuasively argued.
It could also damage journalism. The journalists who write these
stories about people who can't afford to live in New York can't afford to live in New York, either. And that's a trend that may prove just as corrosive to establishment media as any disruptive technology.
In an article today about layoffs at Time Inc., David Carr refers to
the magazine giant as the General Motors of the magazine industry. It's an apt metaphor. For at the publications of Time Inc., and the other two members of Manhattan's historic media Big Three??”the New York Times Co., and Dow Jones, publisher of the Wall Street Journal??”wages have been stagnating for years. (Disclosure: I derive a portion of my income from the Times.) It has long been the case that a reporter for the Journal or Times or Time couldn't afford to live well in Manhattan. But increasingly they can't afford to live well in Park Slope, either.
