The Scent of Ed
*******

What happens when Ed celebrates two holidays at once? He goes to work smelling like chocolate and onions. (Ed's considering marketing it as a cologne. You know, like every other person in the UNIVERSE who has crafted their own scent. First it was #%^@! Paris Hilton with her Eau de Ho-bag for men, now it's Spirit by Antonio Bandumbass? Aghhhhhh.)

An Edster sent this in the other day, saying the best part was where you can click the button and make the cover model's breasts inflate and deflate like balloons. Aside from that, it's an interesting comment on Photoshopping mag covers. Ed salutes you, Mike.

Best of (You Name It)

MEDIA CITY: Every periodical on the planet is listing its top 10 best-and-worst whatevers of 2005, and music magazines take the cake for the most hyped.

Superheroes would be hard-pressed to pull off the twin feats accomplished by Kelly Clarkson this year. Blender magazine's cover girl and "Woman of the Year" managed to not only wash away any leftover stink associated with her "American Idol" victory, she also unleashed on her second album, "Breakaway," a genuine vocal arsenal and musical sensibility ??” more Christina Aguilera than Britney Spears (yes, there's actually a difference). Blender's article rehashes, in underwhelming detail, Clarkson's spectacular year, which was highlighted by the unbelievably catchy and universal hit "Since U Been Gone." The article is worth reading for no other reason than Clarkson's defense of her fondness for drink: "Jesus drank. It says in the Bible he had a glass of wine. I don't know if he actually drank it, but whatever." Blender's yearender also includes a revealing look at how T. Rex's bass-heavy smash hit "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" was created ??” surprise, surprise, alcohol and hard narcotics played a major role. Elsewhere in the newbie rock rag is a list of the year's top 50 CDs, with the intriguing selection of M.I.A.'s "Arular" as 2005's best, and a back page wasted on the increasingly tedious Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst.

Aside from Chuck Klosterman, Spin magazine hasn't produced anything of import since Y2K was a popular topic of conversation. Its latest issue continues the trend. The selection of The Killers as band of the year cements the Las Vegas quartet's status as the most overrated group since Franz Ferdinand. Of the issue's three "best" lists, for albums, reissues and singles, the latter is easily the most perplexing. Spin rightly picks "Feel Good Inc." by the Gorillaz as the year's best single (it's hard to argue with the cultural force of a song that everyone sings yet no one knows the words to) but doesn't get around to Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" until slot 7. And the only single from its band of the year, The Killers' "Mr. Brightside," doesn't even crack the top 10. It does deserve kudos, however, for its "Trend of the Year" story, which argues that underground comedians are the new indie rockers.

Memo Pad: Viva La Resolution

Magazine editors tend to be overachievers par excellence. To their credit, most of them recognize this, and every once in a while they like to fantasize about being the kind of people who can shut off their mobile devices for 15 minutes without having a panic attack. The desire to halt the encroachment of work on leisure time in 2006 was a theme of many editors' New Year's resolutions, as expressed to WWD. "Mine is to wean myself from my Treo, at least on weekend evenings and in the bathroom," said More editor in chief Peggy Northrop. Glamour's Cindi Leive listed her goals this way: "Sleep more, Blackberry less, never miss a 'Daily Show,' perfect my roast chicken. And run fast enough that I can overtake this one guy who practically every single morning passes me down by Battery Park."

Here are some other editors' resolutions:
Klara Glowczewska, Cond?© Nast Traveler: "Read a book a week, cook at least one great meal a week, finally organize my 400-plus photographs from the safari I took in Zambia last summer, and then ??” this, I know, is the most ambitious ??” find the time to do absolutely nothing. Oh, I forgot ??” ski as much as humanly possible."

Kelly Killoren Bensimon, Elle Accessories: "To try to balance life as an mother, editor, author, equestrian and friend. And to eat less pad thai."

Stacy Morrison, Redbook: "To spend less money on Prada and Rickard Shah shoes and more money on BDDW furniture ??” I just bought a new place."

1,000 words, 1,000 issues, but only one Jann

Needless to say, we were delighted at the chance to pour over a New York Times profile of our favorite EIC. Posing under the guise of a celebratory article on Rolling Stone's 1,000th issue, this piece is more of an extremely flattering expose on none other than our go-to-gay Jann Wenner.

At first we thought that maybe Jann had threatened this poor journalist into incorporating overly flattering description of him, such as: "Bouncy, verbose and boyishly handsome", and leaving out details like "Jann is a desk Nazi". Then, we remembered which news organization we were dealing with, and figured that either Timothy O'Brien was trying to get laid, or that the Times company has some secret investment in Wenner Publications.

What we do learn from this article, though, is how much more important Jann's relationship with Janice Min is than the connection he has with his wife, Jane Wenner (only referred to here as the "Mrs."). Jann's lovah/boyfriend/partner, Matt Nye, also takes a backseat to his little media darling.

Time Magazine Considers Ad Gateway to Subscription Content
By Pamela Parker

Time Inc.'s flagship magazine, Time, is testing the notion of making formerly premium online content available free via an ad gateway.

Using technology from Ultramercial, Time.com site visitors have been able to access the renowned "Person of the Year" cover story, along with the magazine's full archive of articles, free for 24 hours. But only after they view a multi-paged, full-screen interactive ad from sponsor Chrysler.

"This is their biggest franchise and this crosses over onto the print side, too, as far as the sponsorship deal," Dana Jones, founder and president of Ultramercial, told ClickZ. "This is a very big undertaking for Time." If the venture shows promise, the publisher may make future cover stories, or other content currently only accessible to subscribers, available on an ad-supported basis. Currently, the cover story, which goes online the day before the magazine hits the newsstand, is for subscribers only.
