What to do with Capote, Frost, and Kissinger? The Atlantic move leaves a dilemmaBy Michael Levenson
12/31/05
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2005/12/31/what_to_do_with_capote_frost_and_kissinger/?page=full

Truman Capote laments that the editors found it necessary to cut his story. The anthropologist Margaret Mead wonders what happened to the manuscript she sent from Bali. Robert Frost asks for someone to please insert a space between the words I and would in one of his poems.

The Atlantic Monthly -- venerable chronicle of the nation's politics, arts, and letters for 148 years -- is packing up and moving out of Boston to its parent company's offices in Washington, D.C., and, as in any big move, it's the odds and ends accumulated over the years that are proving the most vexing.

Thousands of manuscripts, letters, and notes are stuffed into gunmetal filing cabinets, buried in cardboard boxes, and lovingly displayed in black-and-gold frames in the hallways of the Atlantic's fifth-floor offices in a brick office building near Government Center.

Hachette??™s Shock Talk
By Keith J. Kelly

http://www.nypost.com/business/60539.htm

MEDIA INK: MOST major media companies are scaling back on launch plans next year, with one "shocking" exception. Paris-based Lagardere Group ??” parent company of Hachette Filipacchi Media US Inc. ??” is hard at work on Shock, a new men's magazine.

The intent, apparently, is to provoke shock and awe with crash photos from car wrecks and pictures of amazing medical procedures. Choc, a French version, is said to be thriving. Hachette is home to such macho standards as Road & Track and Car and Driver, but it also has some cozy titles like Woman's Day. In the fashion world, it has Elle and little sister Elle Girl.

Mike Hammer is said to have been brought in to work as the launch editor of Shock, under the supervision of Peter Herbst. Herbst, a Hachette editor, is said to be very close to the parent company ??” in part due to his ability to speak fluent French.

Memo Pad: Shock and Awe
By Jeff Bercovici

http://wwd.com/issue/article/103451

Time Inc., Hearst, Emap and Bauer all have considered starting a European-style men's newsstand magazine in the U.S. at various times. Now Hachette Filipacchi Media is thinking along the same lines.

Mike Hammer, a former editor in chief of Stuff magazine, is holed up on the 41st floor of Hachette's New York headquarters working on a prototype of a magazine called Shock.

According to sources, the magazine would be an Americanized version of Choc, a biweekly title Hachette publishes in France. "Choc deals openly and frankly with any and every topic confronting today's world - nothing is taboo," reads a blurb about the title on Hachette's corporate Web site.

Memo Pad: The Real Thing
By Sara James
12/29/05
http://wwd.com/related/article/103434?page=0

Is it possible to make a lifestyle show without a lifestyle guru hosting it? Real Simple seems to think so.

WWD got an advance look at the first episode of the magazine's new PBS series and, surprisingly, the faces selected to represent the brand on public television are a former soap star, an improvisational comic and an actress whose primary credits to date are a Papa John's commercial and an episode of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." According to the bios of Brooke Alexander, Rob Keefe and Cydnee Welburn, none of them has any discernable work experience that would appear to qualify them to talk to women about managing their lives, though Real Simple's managing editor Kristin van Ogtrop doesn't see it that way.

They're professional actors, but they're also people who've lived these Everyman sort of lives," said van Ogtrop. She cited two of the actors' status as single parents, and added that viewers would be able to relate to them because they, too, will be "learning as they go along." Fair enough, but the actor-as-wide-eyed-host routine is occasionally reminiscent of an infomercial. Rather than follow the Martha Stewart model of letting service stand alone on TV, Real Simple has seasoned its lifestyle how-to with some wacky humor. Keefe, for instance, juggles a rubber chicken and steps out of a swimming pool in a scuba suit during the intro.
