Woody Creatures create their very own magazine

Hunter S. Thompson's widow has been anything but idle in the months since her husband's death. In fact, Anita Thompson has been at the center of a whirlwind surrounding the gozno writer's February suicide and its aftermath.

Now, though, she is embarking on something entirely new. Thompson, 32, is to be co-editor of a magazine focusing on Woody Creek - her neighborhood and home to some of the Roaring Fork Valley's more eccentric residents.

Titled The Woody Creeker, the magazine is scheduled to hit newsstands in February. And to quote Anita Thompson's own paraphrase of a line from Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, the publication is meant to be "by the Woody Creatures, for the Woody Creatures."

Next year, expect to see some kinds of spin-offs that'll bust up the Time Warner that we know. In the magazine world, some are already whispering that the stealth barbarian, Bruce Wasserstein, may end up as the new owner of Time Inc.

It may be farfetched but one never knows, and Wasserstein did already sign on as an "adviser" to corporate raider Carl Icahn, who is trying to shake up the board.

OK sends its editor-in-chief, Sarah Ivens, back to England and then, six months later, folds. And Time Inc. decides to move Life magazine out of the Time & Life Building into a new site in Parsippany, N.J., in a last-ditch effort to save it. Hachette launches Shock, a new men's magazine which becomes an immediate hit, and Maer Roshan says he is on the brink of finding a new backer for Radar magazine.

Time Magazine Considers Ad Gateway to Subscription Content

Time Inc.'s flagship magazine, Time, is testing the notion of making formerly premium online content available free via an ad gateway.

Using technology from Ultramercial, Time.com site visitors have been able to access the renowned "Person of the Year" cover story, along with the magazine's full archive of articles, free for 24 hours. But only after they view a multi-paged, full-screen interactive ad from sponsor Chrysler.

"This is their biggest franchise and this crosses over onto the print side, too, as far as the sponsorship deal," Dana Jones, founder and president of Ultramercial, told ClickZ. "This is a very big undertaking for Time."

FAIR GAINS: And to think, a year ago some speculated whether Graydon Carter's job could be in jeopardy.

After a soft newsstand performance at the end of 2004 and a rough start to 2005, Vanity Fair's newsstand average rose a staggering 34 percent in the second half of last year, according to publisher's best estimates. That more than makes up for the 22.5 percent slide the magazine experienced during the same period in 2004. In fact, Vanity Fair's approximate newsstand average for the past six months - just under 445,000 copies - is the magazine's best ever in a six-month period. And for the first time in its history, the magazine broke the 1.2 million mark for total paid circulation.

"Vanity Fair had a great editorial year - we had all the exclusive stories that everyone else wanted - not just Deep Throat, but Jennifer Aniston, Martha Stewart and Woody Allen, to name a few," Carter said last week, via e-mail.
