******* They grow up so fast. In October 2004, on its "Ones to Watch" list, WWD picked People's then-executive editor, Larry Hackett, as the likely successor to managing editor Martha Nelson, if and when she ever took on a heftier role at Time Inc. On Wednesday, editor in chief John Huey named Nelson the editor of the People Group and Hackett as managing editor at the celebrity weekly. "It changes it a lot, in that as managing editor, you're the last word," said Hackett, who was promoted to deputy managing editor just over a year ago. "The covers, the stories, all the decisions about personnel, I made a lot of them before but not all of them, and they were all subject to Martha Nelson." And they will still be subject to Nelson, at least in part, as she continues to oversee the People brand. Huey was initially expected to tap Nelson as Time Inc.'s editorial director, but in recent months, both have spoken of a need for her to continue a hands-on involvement with People. Huey said in a statement to the Time Inc. staff on Wednesday, "If traditionalists find this management structure to be a departure from the past, they are right. It is different. The reason for that, pure and simple, is that the competitive environment we're operating in today is different. It is fast moving, predatory, and filled with opportunities that quickly become threats if we aren't positioned to act on them with speed and strategic certainty." MORE ONLINE

Mary G. Berner, group president, the Fairchild division of Conde Nast Publications, has resigned "to pursue other business opportunities," Conde Nast said today. Her departure is effective as of the end of January and triggers yet another reorganization. Ms. Berner's move comes three months after a reorganization transformed Fairchild Publications from a sibling of Conde Nast Publications into a subordinate unit, reporting to Charles H. Townsend. "I happily ran a company for six years," Ms. Berner said today. "It's been an incredibly great experience. But I realized I like running the whole thing. I like the scope. That's what I'm good at." She denied any resentment over the September reorganization that led to her decision to leave. "Nothing was done to me," she said. "It was a structural move that made a lot of sense." Fairchild should perhaps have been integrated into Conde Nast even earlier, she said. MORE ONLINE

In John Huey's first move since becoming Time Inc. editor in chief Jan. 1, he has promoted Martha Nelson, managing editor of People magazine, to editor of the People Group. Larry Hackett, the magazine's deputy managing editor since December 2004, was promoted to succeed Ms. Nelson. Ms. Nelson, a rising star within Time Inc., gains responsibility for People, Teen People, People en Espanol, People.com and any other brand extensions the company may pursue. Ms. Nelson had been People's managing editor since April 2002, when she returned to the title after a stint launching the huge Time Inc. success In Style. Under her watch, People successfully held its ground and even grew slightly despite an onslaught of new weeklies in the celebrity space. She expanded People's special "Stylewatch" issues, introduced a guide to awards shows called the Hollywood Daily and launched Your Diet. Forbes named her one of the "World's Most Powerful Women" two years in a row. MORE ONLINE

American Media CEO David Pecker is hiring a top executive from Hachette Filipacchi to be the first president and chief operating officer. John Miller turned in his resignation last night and is expected to start in the new post at American Media on Monday. American Media publishes the National Enquirer, Star, Shape and Men's Fitness. The company has been wrestling with a number of problems, including a decline in newsstand sales at its tabloids and a slump in overall profits. Miller said he was not daunted. "We're all facing a lot of the same problems, but when you drill down below the top numbers, I think the underlying numbers are very healthy at American Media," he said. Pecker will essentially keep editorial and finance and turn over the group publishers to Miller, who will be in charge of advertising and marketing. "I was just spread too thin," said Pecker. "We're a company of about $550 million in revenues, about the same as Rodale and Hachette." MORE ONLINE
