Blueprint To Press: After six months of politely putting off questions about a new lifestyle magazine for young women, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is expected to announce today that it is finally moving forward with the project ??” although the company isn't calling it a launch. Two test issues of Blueprint: Design Your Life are planned for this year, the first in May and a second in August, with an initial rate base of 250,000. MSLO anticipates publishing six more in 2007. According to its publisher, the magazine is intended to help women aged 25 to 45 "decide how to decorate, dress, entertain and organize their lives."

"It's been 15 years [since we launched Martha Stewart Living]. A lot has changed in the world in terms of how people manage their time," said MSLO editorial director Margaret Roach. She added the primary difference between Blueprint and the company flagship would be that Blueprint would offer a "broader range of style," encompassing fashion, beauty, health, fitness, travel, technology and culture. Roach also said some of the magazine's how-to advice would inevitably be "simpler" than the famously complicated Martha Stewart Living. In other words, Blueprint will be about as close a competitor to Time Inc. juggernaut Real Simple as that magazine has yet had to face on newsstands.

Separation Anxiety: Elle parent Hachette Filipacchi Media is committing itself to more issues of Elle Accessories ??” but sending mixed messages about the status of its editor, Kelly Killoren Bensimon. Hachette said Monday it will publish two issues of the spin-off in 2006, following a successful launch issue last fall. The issue carried 108 ad pages, and newsstand copies in bookstores sold through at a rate of 50 percent, according to a spokeswoman.

But Hachette also said, in a release, that the follow-up issues would be "helmed" by issue director Anne Slowey (who is also Elle's fashion news director), with the aid of new fashion director Lauren Goodman. Bensimon, said the release, "will continue to contribute as she did in the launch issue." The wording of the statement raised eyebrows, coming, as it did, immediately after news of Bensimon's separation from her husband, Elle international creative director Gilles Bensimon, who pushed for her to be made editor in the first place, according to sources. It also followed a report that she was among a number of candidates under consideration for a fashion director's job at Vanity Fair previously held by Anne McNally, who shared the role with Elizabeth Saltzman Walker.

Gaming Trade Magazine Launches, Folds in 24-Hour Span
By Dylan Stableford

Plenty of well-meaning, independent magazines fold almost as quickly as they??™re launched. But usually not in the same 24-hour span.

That, unfortunately, seemed to be the case this week for the Game Industry Report, a monthly subscription-based magazine ???tailored to software publishers, developers, retailers and buyers, telecom companies, investment and financial firms, hardware/peripherals manufacturers, analysts and entertainment industry representatives.???

On Monday, publisher Jeremy Meyer of the Gaming News Bureau News Group, issued a press release touting the launch of the magazine at last week??™s buzz-heavy Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, including the launch of an online version as a ???free e-zine.??? By Tuesday afternoon, however, Meyer wasn??™t touting anything.

People magazine's exclusive proof, in its current issue, of Angelina Jolie's much-speculated-about fetus left a lot of competing editors asking how, exactly, they got beat on the biggest celebrity story of ... well, at least the week. Jolie's and Brad Pitt's representatives both confirmed the pregnancy to People ??” giving new managing editor Larry Hackett a major scoop in his first full week on the job. But what really counted was the visual: Jolie standing sideways to the camera, her belly silhouetted in a perfect half-circle.

Curiously, the photo credit attributed it not to a paparazzi agency but to the Y?©le Haiti Foundation, a nonprofit started by musician Wyclef Jean. That led to speculation People had agreed to donate a large sum to the foundation in exchange for the much-coveted cover shot. (For the past several weeks, Jolie has only been photographed wearing shape-concealing loose garments, apparently to confound paparazzi looking to document her "bump.")

People admitted in February that it obtained the first photographs of Julia Roberts' twin babies in such an arrangement, buying them from Roberts, who donated the proceeds to charity. Citing the magazine's policy, a spokeswoman for People declined to comment Thursday on how it had obtained the photos, but insisted there was "nothing unusual" about the circumstances.

Brandon Holley, as we already know, is "So Jane." But it turns out she may also be so good for Jane.

Since Holley became editor in chief in August, the magazine has perked up significantly on the newsstand. The November issue, with Nicole Richie on the cover, beat single-copy sales for the same issue of the previous year by 32 percent, according to publisher's best estimates. Holley's December/January issue, featuring Shakira, was up 14 percent over last year's December/January ??” which happened to be the bestseller of 2004. And a recent cover test of the February issue with Alicia Keys, hitting newsstands Jan. 24, produced the most promising test results Jane has ever received.

"I didn't expect to have right out-of-the-box great sellers," said Holley. After all, her full redesign of the magazine won't be unveiled until the March issue. "Nicole Richie was already shot," Holley said. "Shakira I thought would be a good seller, but I didn't think she'd be the second bestseller of 2005, beating out Lindsay Lohan from last year."

Source Duo Dodge Ouster By Board
By Keith J. Kelly
1/13/06
http://www.nypost.com/business/59162.htm

David Mays, founder of the embattled hip-hop magazine The Source, and his longtime president Ray "Benzino" Scott dodged a bullet from a new board of directors seeking to oust the duo.

Yesterday, the Source board, now controlled by executives friendly to the Graves family that owns Black Enterprise magazine, had hoped to boot Mays and Scott. They both obtained a restraining order from a judge in New Jersey to temporarily derail the ouster.

"The board has decided that this was the only feasible course of action as Mays and Scott could not continue their series of financial recklessness and negligence," the suit said.

People??™s Baby Scoop
By Keith J. Kelly
1/13/06
http://www.nypost.com/business/59168.htm

PEOPLE magazine snagged the cover story and pictures confirming Angelina Jolie is pregnant with Brad Pitt's baby ??” but it was at a steep price. An insider said that the magazine paid a "mid-six figure amount" ??” believed to be around $400,000 ??” to Yele Haiti, a charity endorsed by Jolie.

The pictures, with her very visible bump, are on the cover of People. On the inside in tiny type, is the credit "courtesy of the Yele Haiti Foundation" which is a non-profit organization founded by Wyclef Jean.

Although the cover has the words "Yes I'm pregnant" in quotes, the story apparently has a first-hand source confirming the pregnancy. Instead, the story quotes a Henri Dominique, described as "an ambassador from the Yele Haiti relief organization" with the news.

Monthly yanks lawsuit story: Writer says owner of S.F. magazine shied from scrutiny
by Dan Fost
January 13, 2006
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/01/13/BUGLQGMAI81.DTL

A story scheduled to run in the January issue of San Francisco magazine was pulled at the last minute before publication, and the writer and an editor say the spiking was due to fears the magazine's new owners had about offending an advertiser.

The incident represents a rocky start to the marriage between Modern Luxury Media, whose publications are devoted to fashion and high living and virtually devoid of in-depth journalism, and San Francisco magazine, which was founded by KQED nearly 40 years ago as San Francisco Focus and won awards for its hard-hitting reporting.

Freelance writer Peter Byrne said he was told by editor Bruce Kelley that his 5,000-word story, about sexual harassment lawsuits against the Thunder Valley casino near Sacramento, was killed by executives from Modern Luxury Media, which bought San Francisco magazine in July. Executive Editor Nan Wiener, who worked on the story, confirmed Byrne's account and said, "I'm not at all happy about it." The online magazine Salon bought the story and plans to run it today, Byrne said.
