U.S. weeklies trim foreign presence
By Thomas Crampton

http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/01/15/business/papers16.php?rss

PARIS Adapting to competition from the Internet in a downward advertising cycle, the largest U.S.-based newsweeklies have adopted sharply different tactics for the future of their international editions - and none of them involves expansion.

Editors at Newsweek, Time and BusinessWeek emphasize their commitment to international coverage. Yet within the last month, staff reductions at Time and Newsweek and the outright closure of BusinessWeek's international print edition will almost certainly reduce the amount of news and analysis of global affairs.

The wave of "cutbacks at these major U.S. news weeklies overseas is a significant event," said Doug Arthur, a publishing industry analyst in New York with Morgan Stanley. "You cannot help but see this as a major retreat."

Judge blocks Source creditor Textron Financial
The Source managed to beat back a bid by one of its biggest creditors, Textron Financial Corp., to have a court-appointed receiver take over the struggling one-time bible of hip-hop music.

But the victory did little to solve the company's myriad legal and financial woes.

Even after the magazine began moving into a new office at 11 Broadway this week, founder David Mays had to fire several more staffers, including Managing Editor Kimberly Cooper and his own assistant.

The Fit and ???Fat??™ Of It All
1/16/05
http://www.nypost.com/business/61592.htm

Men's Health and Men's Fitness go the distance this month in helping guys ??” and their gals ??” shake the winter blahs.

The February issue of Men's Health, which features "Munich" star Eric Bana on the cover, is chock full of the usual practical advice for men seeking to better their lives. Bana discusses how driving fast cars helps him deal with the stress of being a movie star. Another Hollywood figure, director Robert Rodriguez, talks about how he has found the "perfect life" by working at home, including his kids in his projects, and avoiding the perils of money. The issue's broader theme is "transformation," an appropriate topic for the beginning of the year, and there are articles on improving your physique, your diet and your sex life.

American Media's Men's Fitness aims to be a little edgier than its more established rival Men's Health. One way to accomplish that is by ditching the ripped guy usually displayed on the covers of men's lifestyle magazines in favor of a scantily clad woman ??” in this case Rachelle Leah of Spike TV's "Ultimate Fighting Championship." The first item of interest is a reader poll on dream jobs for men. Almost half of the respondents say they would like to be a pro athlete. Not surprising, right? The centerpiece is an in- depth look at the top 25 "fittest" cit ies in the U.S. and the top 25 "fattest." Balti more comes in as the fittest city, while Chi cago ranks as the fattest. Sorry to re port that New York just makes the fattest list, coming in at No. 25.

Every New Yorker Issue (Some Swapping Required)
By Sara Ivry
1/16/05
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/16/business/media/16yorker.html

When Peter Vermelen, an avid reader of The New Yorker, got word last year that the magazine's entire archive would be available on DVD in September, he ordered a copy. When he was thwarted in his efforts to copy the multidisc anthology onto his hard drive - so he could read and search the content from there rather than using the discs - he became angry and started writing about his frustration on Hooptyrides, a blog he maintains under the nom de plume Mister Jalopy.

"I looked forward to having 'The Complete New Yorker' on my laptop. Airplane trips would never be the same," he wrote last month. In response, other online posts, including one on the widely read BoingBoing.net, weighed in with tips on how to override the digital rights management software that seemed to prevent copying from the eight DVD's.

The essence of the complaint was that switching among the discs to conduct thematic searches was "really onerous," Mr. Vermelen said. "If you want to read the magazine in order, there's no problem. But if you want to search by Thurber or Capote or Chinatown or Halloween or some broad topic, it's spread over eight discs."

Fashionista U: Teen Vogue to Teach the Biz
By Stephanie D. Smith

http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001844100

Cond?© Nast??™s Teen Vogue in October will offer readers a crash course on the fashion business at Fashion U, a three-day event in New York.

The goal will be to have 1,000 participants attend seminars and lectures, conducted by Teen Vogue??™s fashion team, which will cover everything from jewelry design to managing a clothing line. Attendees can pay for either the entire event??”including a live concert and fashion show??”or individual classes. A portion of the proceeds will go to a soon-to-be-named charity. Although the schedule is still being finalized, Teen Vogue vp/publisher Gina Sanders said course highlights will be available online, so budding designers from Duluth, Minn., can also access Fashion U??™s curriculum.

The program, she added, will mentor readers looking to do more than wear fabulous clothes. ???We??™re hearing more and more from readers that they no longer dream of becoming fashion models, but they aspire to be in the business of fashion,??? she explained.

Food Fight: RDA to Test Delicious in May
By Stephanie D. Smith
1/16/05
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001843816

In recent months, epicurean publishers have cooked up a storm, launching titles such as Reader??™s Digest Association??™s Every Day With Rachael Ray and announcing spinoffs such as Dishes, a nutritional food special to be unveiled by Cond?© Nast??™s Self in April.

Next on the menu will be yet another foodie title by RDA called Delicious, according to sources familiar with the magazine. Delicious will be tested in May in a digest-sized format, boasting a 250,000 rate base and $3.99 cover price. The publishing frequency will be determined at a later date if the title is greenlighted. An annual bookazine is expected to accompany the magazine on newsstands.

Along with entertaining and travel, Delicious will cover famous chefs, as well as recipes that run the culinary gamut. An RDA spokesperson confirmed there would be a digest-sized food title due out later this spring but declined to provide details. In addition to Rachael Ray, RDA??™s Reiman Publishing unit publishes Taste of Home, a magazine comprised of recipe contributions from its readers.

Rosie O??™Donnell plans to take another whack at the publishing business, calling the infamous legal battle over editorial control of her now defunct Rosie magazine ???by far the most hideous part of my career.???

O??™Donnell, 44, is in talks with ???a very well known publisher??? to bring back an updated version of the title, she revealed Friday while promoting her upcoming HBO special All Aboard: Rosie??™s Family Cruise. The openly gay mother of four also said she and partner Kelly O??™Donnell have no plans to expand their family any further: ???I have been told that if I bring anything home that eats or poops I will be single. She wanted two children and she met me and I had two children, but I wanted eight. I think a nice compromise would be five.???

IVENS ENLIVENS OK: Following a rash of speculation about OK's future in America, the fledgling weekly's executives are anxious to clarify what changes they are, and aren't, planning. First, what they aren't doing: A spokesman for the magazine said editor in chief Sarah Ivens is absolutely not stepping down anytime soon. Reports have claimed Ivens was merely marking time in the job until April, when Nicola McCarthy's noncompete agreement with Wenner Media expires. (McCarthy ditched Us Weekly, where she was executive editor, a year ago to head OK's launch, only to be barred by court order from doing so; instead, she's been working on foreign editions.)

The Good Old Boy of Time Inc.
By Kurt Andersen
http://www.newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/columns/imperialcity/15550/index.html

Pretty much every important media story these days is, one way or another, about the struggle to cope with the end of the fat and happy twentieth-century era of media monopolies and oligopolies, of balancing the imperatives of new technology and the free market against intangible cultural values, whether and how to give people all the candy they want or the meat and vegetables they need. And because the bosses of big media got into the game just before the good old days ended, the smartest of them, even the constitutionally cheerful ones, seem slightly . . . fretful, if not dispirited.

Like John Huey. On the first of the year, he became editorial boss of all the magazines (except??”???sadly,??? he says??”Mad) that Time Warner owns. The very name of his division, Time Inc., with its 151 titles, is vestigial and nostalgic, like the fa?§ade of an old building behind which a generic modern high-rise has been built.

Huey was never Most Likely to Succeed. He??™d had a decent newspaper career, but by age 45 he was just a mid-level editor at Fortune. Then in 1995, his luck changed: His old Wall Street Journal boss, Norman Pearlstine, became Time Inc.??™s editor-in-chief, and the Internet boom began. Pearlstine promoted Huey to Fortune??™s editorship at the perfect moment, and he took full advantage, making it newsier, tougher, sexier, funnier, excellent. And his timing on the other end??”he left to become Pearlstine??™s No. 2 just as the go-go era ended??”couldn??™t have been better either.
