Memo Pad: Travel Savvy ... Bauer Outage
By Jeff Bercovici
January 19, 2006
http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/103745

Travel Savvy: OK's owner Richard Desmond has pledged up to $100 million to make the U.K.-based brand a success in the U.S., and has reportedly ponied up cash for access to celebrities on several occasions. But he's not above saving a few bucks in other areas. While other celebrity weeklies (including People, Us Weekly and In Touch) officially bar their employees from going on all-expenses-paid junkets, OK encourages the practice.

Editor in chief Sarah Ivens recently arranged to take a free beach vacation for two at the end of April, promising a two-page feature on the resort in return, according to a source familiar with her plans. Asked about the deal, Ivens confirmed it but said it was no power perk. "Probably about 20 members of the staff have been on free press trips," she said.

"I'm not actually embarrassed about that. Every editorial staffer is entitled to go on a press trip, and that includes senior editors, and it includes editorial assistants. It might not be the way things have traditionally been done at celebrity weeklies [in the U.S., but] in the U.K. we always take press trips." Ivens added the junkets were always covered in the magazine's weekly travel section. "That area of the magazine isn't supposed to be hard-core news. It's clearly marked as celebrity lifestyle."

Bauer Outage: An early-morning blackout caused temporary closure of Bauer Publishing's Englewood Cliffs, N.J., offices Wednesday. Although power returned after a few hours, as of late afternoon calls to the company's main number were greeted by a recorded message instructing employees to contact their supervisors and work from home.

But some people hadn't planned on coming in, anyway. Two weeks after the departure of former Maxim editor in chief Keith Blanchard, Bauer let go of two editors he had hired to help create a new weekly magazine: Charles Coxe, formerly Maxim's executive editor, and Gabrielle Simon, previously managing editor of Giant. (A freelance photo editor was also dismissed.)

According to a source, Blanchard and his team were brought in to develop a concept dreamed up by Bauer president Hubert Boehle, a hybrid of several magazine genres. (The project was unrelated to Bullet, the men's magazine project Blanchard worked up for Hearst last summer.) When they tried to take the title in a different direction than Boehle had originally conceived, he elected to replace them with an internal team headed by Life & Style editor in chief Sheryl Berk. A Bauer spokesman could not be reached for comment.

Time Inc. Hires Two Top Execs from Rivals
By Nat Ives
January 19, 2006
http://www.adage.com/news.cms?newsId=47520

Time Inc., continuing the changes that are sweeping the company, has raided rival publishers to fill top posts that were left vacant in a big shakeup last December. Time Inc., the country??™s largest magazine publisher, named Leslie Picard its new senior VP-corporate sales and marketing. Ms. Picard had been VP-publisher, Conde Nast Publications??™ Bon Appetit.

She succeeds Fred Poust, who was one of 105 company executives shown the door last month by Ann S. Moore, chairwoman-CEO, in a bid to cut costs and reallocate resources. Mr. Poust had reported to Jack Haire, who left during the changes after turning down an unspecified new role at the company. But Ms. Picard will report to Robin Domeniconi, the former president and publisher of Time Inc.??™s Real Simple who was named to lead corporate sales in December.

Separately, Thomas Beusse was named president of the Time Inc.??™s Time4 Media, which includes Ski, Field & Stream and Popular Science. He succeeds Mark Ford, who became president of Sports Illustrated last month. Mr. Beusse had been president of magazine publishing at Rodale.

Hip-Hop Heave-Ho
By Keith J. Kelly
January 19, 2006
http://www.nypost.com/business/60710.htm

In the latest tug of war for control of The Source Entertainment Inc., founder David Mays and the longtime president, rapper Ray "Benzino" Scott were ordered out of their jobs by the newly constituted board of directors after a temporary restraining order blocking the move was lifted.

Four of the six board members voted to fire the duo last week and instead install Jeremy Miller, a one-time chief operating officer, as the new chief executive of The Source. Scott and Mays had gone to court last week to obtain a temporary restraining order in New Jersey, where they reside, to block the axing while they prepared a lawsuit against the new board.

Yesterday, New Jersey Superior Court Judge Gerald Escala lifted the temporary restraining order, effectively clearing the way for the firings. The Source was once known as the hip-hop bible, but in more recent years has seen its ad pages and circulation tumble. Last month, it dropped out of the Publishers Information Bureau, which tracks ad page tallies for major consumer magazines. Mays and Scott remain defiant and are still pursuing another action in New Jersey, claiming the new board illegally seized control of the company.

Cond?© Nastiness Fails to Bring Down McCarthy Era
By Emma Rosenblum
January 23, 2006
http://www.nymag.com/nymetro/news/people/columns/intelligencer/15576/index.html

Patrick McCarthy just renewed his contract with Cond?© Nast for another three years, say several insiders. Since 1997, he??™s been chairman and editorial director of Fairchild Publications, home of W, Women??™s Wear Daily, Details, and Jane, running it as a style fiefdom along with co-regent CEO Mary Berner. This past fall, though, owner Si Newhouse merged Fairchild fully into Cond?© Nast.

This past fall, though, owner Si Newhouse merged Fairchild fully into Cond?© Nast. As one Fairchild exec put it, ???Fairchild as a company doesn??™t matter anymore.??? On January 4, Berner announced she was quitting. Speculation was McCarthy would follow her out the door. But the dapper and apparently politically adept McCarthy has maintained the editorial control he held prior to the Cond?© Nast takeover. A spokesperson for Cond?© Nast said, ???We do not comment on the contracts of our employees.???

The Good Old Boy of Time Inc.
By Kurt Andersen
January 23, 2006
http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/columns/imperialcity/15550/index.html

Pretty much every important media story these days is, one way or another, about the struggle to cope with the end of the fat and happy twentieth-century era of media monopolies and oligopolies, of balancing the imperatives of new technology and the free market against intangible cultural values, whether and how to give people all the candy they want or the meat and vegetables they need. And because the bosses of big media got into the game just before the good old days ended, the smartest of them, even the constitutionally cheerful ones, seem slightly...fretful, if not dispirited.

Like John Huey. On the first of the year, he became editorial boss of all the magazines (except??”???sadly,??? he says??”Mad) that Time Warner owns. The very name of his division, Time Inc., with its 151 titles, is vestigial and nostalgic, like the fa?§ade of an old building behind which a generic modern high-rise has been built.

Huey was never Most Likely to Succeed. He??™d had a decent newspaper career, but by age 45 he was just a mid-level editor at Fortune. Then in 1995, his luck changed: His old Wall Street Journal boss, Norman Pearlstine, became Time Inc.??™s editor-in-chief, and the Internet boom began. Pearlstine promoted Huey to Fortune??™s editorship at the perfect moment, and he took full advantage, making it newsier, tougher, sexier, funnier, excellent. And his timing on the other end??”he left to become Pearlstine??™s No. 2 just as the go-go era ended??”couldn??™t have been better either.

The MPA??™s potentially smelly connection to Jack Abramoff
By Steve Cohn
11/18/06
http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

To be fair, nobody at the Magazine Publishers of America knew the sordid side of lobby?¬ist Abramoff--who pled guilty on January 3-4 to charges of fraud and tax evasion--when his Preston Gates Ellis & Rouvelas Meeds LLP firm was hired in 2000 to fight the then-proposed 15% postal increase. Part of the MPA's $1.4 million agreement was an addition?¬al $25,000 donation to a Seattle-based foundation called Toward Tradition, which, per Abramoff's plea bargain, was the front for indicted ex-House Majority Whip Tom DeLay's (R.-Tex.) chief of staff Tony Rudy. MPA has the counsel of p.r. pro Howard Rubenstein to get it out of the mess, and The Washington Post (January 9) reported him saying that association presi?¬dent (since November 1999) Nina Link and the board of directors "had absolutely no knowledge of how the money would be used...." The Abramoff postal arm-twisting paid off, as the amount was reduced to +9.9% (two other increases, including January 8's +5.4%, have come since), but whether his crimes will tarnish the MPA's future Capitol Hill relationships remains to be seen.

Din of silence about the new TV Guide
By Toni Fitzgerald
11/18/05
http://medialifemagazine.com/artman/publish/article_2275.asp

When TV Guide embarked on a bold redesign over the summer, it did so as part of a major repositioning in which it shed most of its listings and trimmed its circulation by two-thirds, to a rate base of 3.2 million.

The aim of the 52-year-old magazine was to become relevant again, after years of increasing irrelevance, and the new look would get people talking. That was the idea.

The redesign solved some of TV Guide??™s big problems. Certainly, its layout is more attractive, and its larger size is a lot more appealing to advertisers.
