Growing Pains Spell Layoffs at Bauer Publications
By Keith J. Kelly

http://www.nypost.com/business/59290.htm

BAUER Publications, the sleepy company in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., has been amazing the publishing world with its rollout of newsstand-oriented celebrity weeklies ??” first with In Touch and more recently with Life & Style. So it was probably only a matter of time before it started firing people the way the big boys do.

Last week, the company said it was combining the sales staff of the two magazines into a single Entertainment Group. As a result, Rosanna Giacalone, the launch publisher of Life & Style, is out of her job after helping to make the magazine one of the top new entrants in the field.

In the Jan. 16 edition, the company boasted its highest-ever newsstand sales, about 800,000 copies. "I felt we developed a great brand," said Giacalone. "What I want to do now is work on another great brand," said the veteran, who earlier worked at Glamour and Us.

STAR PUPILS: To get a sense of Bonnie Fuller's impact on the current state of American journalism, all you need to do is visit a newsstand and glance around at the ever-growing ranks of celebrity tabloids. Now, Fuller, the editorial director of titles including Star and Celebrity Living and former editor in chief of Us Weekly, has a chance to influence future generations of magazine makers, as well.

On Tuesday night, she will speak to a group of around 50 students at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism about her job, her career path and her advice for getting ahead in the industry. The students are members of Columbia's chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Amanda Millner-Fairbanks, who is in charge of lining up speakers for the chapter, said her peers recognize the celebrity category for what it is: an oasis of growth and opportunity in an otherwise arid job market. "She's sort of the mother hen of this new form that's taken hold and is very profitable," said Millner-Fairbanks, who will introduce Fuller and moderate the question-and-answer session.

If writing cover lines such as "Kevin Cheats On Brit!" isn't what most Columbia students enrolled to learn, that's no matter. "We try and expose our student body to all types of journalism," Millner-Fairbanks said. "The J-school has this reputation as a bunch of elites where everyone wants to write for The New Yorker, but that's not true. We had, I think his name is Lloyd Grove, come and speak." (Grove is a gossip columnist at The New York Daily News.) "That was interesting. People took him to task. I think much the same will happen with Ms. Fuller. A lot of people, I'm sure, will be critical of the work she's doing, and a lot of people will see it as a possible job in an industry that's not hiring a lot right now."

SHOW DOWN: Given what some might call the "troubled" history between Vogue and Giorgio Armani ??” in the fall of 2001, Armani was so unhappy with the coverage his clothes were getting in Vogue's pages that he pulled advertising from the magazine for several seasons ??” Men's Vogue editor in chief Jay Fielden's absence from the designer's men's wear show in Milan on Thursday was a bit surprising to those who were there. The talk in Milan was that Fielden's slight might set off another spat between Armani and the Vogue brand.

Hardly. For starters, Fielden was at the Emporio Armani show on Tuesday. And a Vogue spokesman said, "Jay was always going to have an abbreviated trip to Milan this season. He flew back to the U.S. [on Thursday], as scheduled, to be with his wife, who is expecting a new baby any minute."

As of press time, the new Fielden had not made his or her debut.

CHIEF CONCERNS: Harper's Bazaar has lost one of its editors in chief. But then, it had two to spare.

Executive editor in chief Jenny Barnett ??” as opposed to deputy editor in chief Sarah Bailey or editor in chief Glenda Bailey ??” quietly left the magazine in December to pursue freelance writing. Barnett said in a statement, "I've absolutely loved my time working at Harper's Bazaar, but I decided to leave the magazine to go freelance. Over the past 17 years I've worked with Glenda, she's been a great mentor and friend to me, but I'm looking forward to spending some time with my family and working on a few independent projects."

Martha 2.0: After Ad Turnaround, CEO Says ???Survival??™ Question Put to Rest
By Dylan Stableford

http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1500

After a year that began with her company??™s namesake in jail and its flagship magazine??™s print advertising in a dramatic freefall??”and ended with an equally dramatic turnaround??”Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia president and CEO Susan Lyne says that she can finally put to rest the question of the company??™s survival.

???I heard that everywhere I went,??? said Lyne of her first year at the helm. ???I don??™t hear that anymore.??? Lyne??™s comments came during a Magazine Publishers of America breakfast Thursday in New York.

There??™s no way we could??™ve come out of 2005 without a complete turnaround of advertising flight,??? Lyne said. Martha Stewart Living??™s PIB revenue increased 45 percent to $104.62 million on 910.68 ad pages, roughly 250 more than it had in 2004.

For Magazines at Sundance, Hosting Parties and Looking to Build Cache Even the Films Can??™t
By Dylan Stableford
1/19/06
http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1499

Film and music festivals??”like this week??™s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and SXSW in Austin in March??”present a myriad of opportunities for magazines to promote their brands. But does hosting a party for celebrities have any real impact in the bigger picture?

At Sundance??”the perennially over-hyped gathering of celebrities, non-celebrities and paparazzi converging on a sleepy mountain town with, oh yeah, some film screenings??”there will be the usual wall-to-wall lineup of magazine-hosted parties, with revelers photographed partying in front of the host??™s logo-backdrop, an advertiser??™s beverage presumably in hand. Magazines have always been part of the Hollywood studio buzz-building machinery, but their presence at events such as Sundance has, in recent years, reached new levels of ubiquity.

This year is no exception. Dennis??™ Blender??”in its third year at Sundance??”is partnering with TAO Las Vegas for Blender Sessions at TAO Nightclub, a series of nightly music parties hosted by??”speaking of ubiquitous??”Paris Hilton and Wilmer Valderrama, among others. Absolut, Budweiser and Yahoo! are signed on as sponsors for series, which will also screen a pair of documentaries including ???Fast Future Generation,??? about the band Good Charlotte, ???complemented by the DJ wizardry of Good Charlotte brothers Benji and Joel Madden.???

http://www.nypost.com/business/59286.htm

Jack Welch, the former General Electric Co. chief who led the company for 20 years before stepping down in 2001, will write an advice column for BusinessWeek, the magazine said.

In essence, Welch said the neophyte executive asks "What do I do now?" "Everybody's got their first-time management challenge," Welch, 70, said from his office in Boston. "We try and pick out the most generic question that can be helpful to the broadest audience."

"The Welch Way," will be co-written with his wife, Suzy, a former Harvard Business Review editor, and will appear every other week, the magazine said.
