******* As the summer of 2005 drew to a close I had harsh words for journalists who write about their summer houses. Although such writings tend to celebrate the anti-materialist glories of country living, nobody is giving away houses on Block Island free of charge. And although journalists usually like to pretend, at least, that they're regular folks, when it comes to summer houses their egalitarian impulses (I wrote) are channeled into class resentment against a whole group of other summer-ers who represent the true elite. The squire who inherits his summer home feels morally superior to the arriviste who buys one because, well, it's not as though he's this rich person who slapped down a fat wad of cash. Meanwhile, the arriviste who buys his summer home feels morally superior to the squire who inherits one because, well, it's not as though he's some pampered aristocrat. He earned the money that bought this sylvan retreat! The foregoing status analysis pertaining to money and class in America, and what those who prize these things tell themselves in order to reconcile their desires with their more democratic impulses, isn't particularly novel. But it's altogether too nuanced to process an article in the Jan. 19 New York Times about The New Yorker writer Susan Orlean's weekend place in the Hudson Valley. The damn thing has choked up all my gears and brought my machinery to a stuttering halt. MORE ONLINE
2. NY Post It's admirable how archrival gossip mags can spin totally different tales each week on the same stuff about the same handful of celebrities. It's an art form that takes an eye highly trained in star worship to spot the differences ??” or even keep up. In this week's Star, for example, the anorexic, bony arms of a pregnant Angelina Jolie are cropped out, while rival mags weave stories on whether such a skinny mom with protruding arm veins can even carry a pregnancy to term. Star's inventive layouts and photo work make headlines and images pop. But in its desperation to beat the rest of the pack, Star has gone with a highly speculative cover story this week: A devastated Jennifer Aniston has reportedly proposed to her beau-on-the-rebound Vince Vaughn that he marry her and give her a child, thereby mending her broken heart over losing Brad Pitt to Jolie. One good Star hit ??” unflattering photos of a fat and stringy-haired Britney Spears bloated to (gasp!) 140 pounds, double chins and all, due to her cheating husband Kevin Federline. In Touch pounces on the preggers Jolie story, splashing her glamour headshot on the cover with an exclusive: "What She's Not Telling Brad," which arguably could be just about anything you could imagine, since she's not telling Brad. In Touch is much kinder to Spears with a flattering spread of her getting her infant son blessed at a Hindu ceremony, her forehead splattered with red-dot worship ink. In Touch doesn't ignore the smaller-headline conflicted star couples, such as Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, or Sheryl Crow and Lance Armstrong. The stories about them are basically the same game of musical chairs of romance ??” either they're splitting up or getting back together. Then there's the obligatory lurid snapshots of always-wild Paris Hilton, and accompany ing stories about her best enemy Nicole Richie, whose hair is said to be falling out. There's one progressive touch in both Star and In Touch: Ages of stars are disclosed everywhere and often, documenting what celebrities really fear and hate ??” aging. MORE ONLINE

The Walt Disney Company, through its Disney Worldwide Publishing division, will join the crowded but profitable parenting magazine category next month. Wondertime, Disney's first new magazine since 1991, is aimed at education-obsessed parents of the very young. "The magazine is for parents, and more specifically moms, of children from birth to age 6," said Alexandra Kennedy, the vice president and editorial director of the United States consumer magazine group at Disney, which also publishes FamilyFun and Disney Adventures. In 2005, the publishing unit sold Discover magazine to Bob Guccione Jr. and shut down Disney magazine, which offered an inside look at Disney resorts, projects and history. MORE ONLINE

PERSONA NON GRATA: The recent exposure of writer JT LeRoy as an apparent fraud has made life somewhat awkward for those who have been party to the charade, knowingly or otherwise. Take Palm Pictures, which is trying to publicize a new film based on LeRoy's novel "The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things." Palm invited ridicule with its poster for the film, which declares it to be "based on a true story." BlackBook magazine posted a copy of the poster on its Web site last week, along with a suggestion for revising the copy: "Hey guys, how about 'Based on a complete and utter lie?'" MORE ONLINE RADAR'S PUZZLE PIECES: While Radar editor in chief Maer Roshan has set off, once again, on a pilgrimage to find yet another round of funding, his former staffers have been circulating their r?©sum?©s. MORE ONLINE BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS: Just what were Kent Brownridge and Steve Florio discussing over breakfast at Michael's earlier this month? Perhaps free-agent Brownridge and soon-to-be-free-agent Florio were comparing notes on the next chapters of their careers? MORE ONLINE

Elle Accessories and Banana Republic celebrated the magazine's second issue with a cocktail party at Double Seven Thursday night, set against a backdrop of chocolate alligator skin and ginger-infused cocktails. The party, which brought out a well-accessorized crowd, also drew a few surprise guests from the worlds of high fashion and high art: Russell Simmons, Cecily Brown, Calvin Klein, and Ross Bleckner. In 2006, the byword for some seems to be ???fashionably early.??? Simmons, in signature baseball cap, arrived on time and settled into a banquette front-and-center, beating even the evening's hosts, Elle Accessories editors Kelly Killoren Bensimon and Anne Slowey, and Banana Republic's Deborah Lloyd. In a more 1980s spirit, Klein's late arrival caused him to miss the ladies of the hour??”and photographers??”altogether. Gilles Bensimon arrived with Kelly, camera in hand, ready to take his very own party pictures. Mark Badgley and James Mischka stopped by before rushing uptown to the Winter Antiques Show, as did Cartier CEO Frederic De Narp, who spent the evening talking shop with Hachette CEO Jack Kliger.
