************* Ed's BEG-ATHON ************* Taking a cue from WNYC and other local public radio affiliates, Ed is launching a big, fat fundraising Beg-athon. What you'll get for your donation: Ed's re-designed, double-stuffed website (with new content like Secret Sample Edit Tests, What it's Like to Work At ..., and more); expanded EdSchool seminars like resume and interview workshops with magazine HR guru Stella Angelakos; and more panel discussions on everything from travel writing to breaking into women's mags. If Ed has ever made you laugh, given you hope, gotten you a job or helped you meet a significant other at one of his meat-market happy hours (kidding), give him some sugar. A $10 donation would make him cry in gratitude, a fiver will make him jump up and down. Hell, even a dollar will be appreciated. Go to Ed2010.com, click on Who We Are, then click DONATE. (See, this'll be much easier to navigate when Ed's site re-design launches!)

******* Richard Johnson's byline has been absent from Page Six lately. Since Jan. 17, the New York Post has run a note next to the gossip column's header: "Richard Johnson is on assignment." So what's the "assignment"? No, Johnson's not off infiltrating the Lohan clan: He's been working on the glossy version of Page Six, due out next month. "It's a mix of all the stuff we have on Page Six," he said. "There's some gossip. We have a feature on Victoria's Secret, with pictures from a [catalogue] shoot; an Oscar package, because the issue is coming out between the nominations and the Oscars, and we're going to have a nightlife guide, focusing on clubs opening in New York." The idea for the magazine came out of the year-end Sixy awards, which covered four pages in the Post last January. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of Page Six. MORE ONLINE 2.Think ProgressIsikoff Confirms Abramoff Shopped Bush Photos By Staff 1/25/06 http://thinkprogress.org/2006/01/24/update-isikoff-confirms-abramoff-shopped-bush-photos/ Over the weekend, Time magazine and the Washingtonian both reported on five photos of President Bush with Jack Abramoff, but neither publication revealed its source. Yesterday, ThinkProgress laid out the case for why the source for the photos was likely Abramoff himself. Last night, our hunch was confirmed. Appearing on MSNBC, Newsweek correspondent Michael Isikoff reported that it was indeed Abramoff who floated the photographs to Washingtonian MORE ONLINE 3. FolioMagazines' Handeling of Bode Miller: A Case Study in Athlete Product Placement, Exclusivity By Dylan Stableford and Bill Mickey 1/24/06 http://www.foliomag.com/viewmedia.asp?prmMID=5355 Outside's February issue reveals a staggering amount of non-ad page logos in accompanying photos, while Newsweek and Time duel for Miller's face-time. Newsweek's editor Mark Whitaker, meanwhile, defends his editor's note's ???exclusive??? claim. It's a given that athletes competing in outside, fringe, extreme (skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking and any litany of death-dodging undertakings) sports live by product endorsement deals, but the magazines who profile them are often caught walking an ethical line along the jagged ridge of product placement. To whit: Bode Miller, and the magazines who profile him. With the Winter Olympics just weeks away, U.S. skier Bode Miller's recent admission to having raced ???wasted??? was big news. Several magazines-including Outside, Newsweek and Time-profiled Miller on their covers, and their treatment of both the skier and his endorser, Nike, on their covers and in their pages reveal three approaches to handling an athlete's own product placement, and access to the athlete himself. MORE ONLINE 4. New York Daily NewsKanye West, superstar? He Thinks So. By Staff 1/25/06 http://www.nydailynews.com/news/gossip/story/385600p-327237c.html Kanye West tries for some predictable shock on the cover of Rolling Stone by posing as Jesus Christ. Photographed in a crown of thorns by professional provocateur David LaChapelle, the rapper can be seen with "blood" trickling down his face. They're apparently borrowing the idea Sean Combs had in 1999, when he shot a mock crucifixion for a Nas video. Back then, Puffy had second thoughts about aping his Savior. When the video made it on to MTV, he and two bodyguards beat up the music exec he held responsible. (A law-suit was settled out of court.) But yesterday, usually outraged Catholic League gadfly William Donohue had trouble working up much spleen over the Kanye-LaChapelle stunt. "This kind of thing has become commonplace," Donohue told us, recalling a crucifixion gambit pulled by People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals. "It's one thing to rip off Catholic iconography. It's quite another to exploit a poor soul like Kanye West. Anyone who is this morally and mentally challenged deserves our sympathy not our derision." MORE ONLINE 5. Fashion Week Daily29 Days and Counting By Staff 1/24/06 http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=298022&itype=8486 Interview magazine, along with Tod's, made an eye-catching announcement in its February issue via a full-page advertisement featuring a green cardboard box with the Tod's logo done up in hot pink. With the curious phrase: ???Happening in February in Milan and on the Web,??? the ad directed inquiring minds to www.todspop.com. The pop-art inspired site, which features a countdown clock leading up to Milan Fashion Week, hints at some clues on the collaborative project between the two companies. According to a Tod's spokeswoman, an event is scheduled to take place during fashion week, that will showcase pop art. The Andy Warhol-founded Interview, which bills itself as the ???crystal ball of Pop,??? will offer exclusive interviews from a planned exhibition of over 35 years of the magazine's iconic covers and original Pop artifacts. The event, co-sponsored by Tod's and Interview, is scheduled to take place at the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea space, otherwise known as PAC, which has traditionally played host to Tod's bi-annual editors'presentations-and, as of late, some much anticipated parties, as illustrated by the star-studded book launch the company hosted last season in honor of artist and New Yorker fashion director Michael Roberts.
