******* In their dispatches from the home front, O and Martha Stewart Living continue to rise about the rest in finding the right formula in keeping house and home ?? and the love that binds them ?? together. Oprah is feeling the love with an O issue that is well-timed for Valentine's Day. There is much discussion of love, sex and romance with a predictable self-help focus (cue Dr. Phil). Still, the unifying message ?? whether it's an essay about love and disappointment, vignettes of real-life couples or famous authors dishing about their experiences ?? is that we all need to be more realistic about our expectations. Somehow the mag manages to keep us grounded while urging us on to bigger and better things. Martha Stewart's mushy Valentine cover marks the 15th anniversary of Martha Stewart Living. Despite imitators, it's still the original winner with its useful offerings of homestlye issues and factoids, e.g., "The ripest, sweetest passion fruits are actually those that look past their prime." There's also a spread on "Cleaning Clothes for Every Task," You need eight kinds, and a sidebar instructs you on how to care for them. The mag's food and decorating layouts are always hard to beat, and could rightfully claim title as a gold standard. There's enough inviting recipes to keep you busy all winter. MORE ONLINE

LONGTIME New York magazine restaurant critic Gael Greene has just as massive an appetite for sex with larger-than-life lovers as she does for gourmet delights. In her upcoming memoir, "Insatiable: Tales From a Life of Delicious Excess," due out in April from Warner Books, the unrepentant hedonist describes steamy nights of passion with Clint Eastwood, porn star Jamie Gillis and Elvis Presley in between dishing on her favorite haute-cuisine meals. "For me, the two greatest discoveries of the 20th century were the Cuisinart and the clitoris," Greene writes. Among the hotter hookups she details: MORE ONLINE

Be careful if you criticize Howard Stern. Steppin' Out mag editor Chaunce Hayden has learned that you might get death threats. Now the Bergen County (N.J.) district attorney and Computer Crime Unit are investigating Stern acolytes who threatened Hayden with fatal violence on an online fan site after he took part in Neil Cavuto's Fox News Channel show last Monday and slammed the Sirius Satellite Radio jock. FREY STILL HAS SOME FRIENDS: At least one character in James Frey's second memoir, "My Friend Leonard," exists in real life, precisely as described. It's Bella, Frey's pit bull, who was recently photographed with the embattled author and his other pooch, Preacher, for the March issue of Absolute. MORE ONLINE MAXIM MINIMIZES: Dennis Publishing always has prided itself on its very British practice of operating with staffing levels leaner than is usual for U.S. magazines. The company got even more British recently when it laid off a number of employees from Maxim and Blender. A Dennis spokesman confirmed the cuts included Blender senior writer Clark Collis and associate photo editor Tom Payne, as well as two business-side staffers at Maxim. Collis, described as a "catch-all writer," will be especially hard to replace, according to two former co-workers: "He wrote so much of the book, it will be hard to imagine how they get it done now," said one. MORE ONLINE BONNIE BOOK HAS TRUTHINESS: Like other celebrity weeklies, Star magazine has been known on occasion to publish a claim that doesn't stand the test of time. But when it came to writing the story of her own life, don't expect Star editorial director Bonnie Fuller to turn out to be another James Frey. "I didn't have to embellish anything," she said. And, no, her publisher, Simon & Schuster, didn't insist on fact-checking all of her anecdotes after Frey's distortions became a full-blown media obsession. MORE ONLINE
5. Folio: Step Inside Design thought it was being cute when it used kittens on its December/January cover to portray the ???Women of Design.??? Many of its readers, though, didn??t. ???Congratulations on degrading your well-written, well-researched articles with a cover that portrays these hard-working, intelligent, and creative women as a bunch of adorable, cuddly and nonthreatening housepets,??? one reader wrote in a letter to the editor. Wrote another: ???I was shocked and greatly disappointed. In fact, my response was visceral to the point of nausea ??¦ STEP has shown itself as a magazine short on integrity and depth. I have canceled my subscription.??? MORE ONLINE
