Viva Las Wenner! Rolling Stone is Planning Casino
By Gabriel Sherman
02/1/06
http://www.nyobserver.com/20060206/20060206_Gabriel_Sherman_media_offtherecord.asp

On the weekend of Jan. 28, Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner traveled to Las Vegas to work on plans for a Rolling Stone Hotel and Casino.

Mr. Wenner's magazine has a long history with the city. On assignment there in November 1971, Rolling Stone writer Hunter S. Thompson announced the defeat of the counterculture: From the city, Thompson wrote, ???you can almost see the high-water mark-the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.???

Nearly 35 years after Thompson's visit, according to a source with knowledge of the deal, the Wenner Media chief is negotiating with real-estate developers to license his magazine's name to an estimated $500 million development with luxury hotel rooms, a casino and a music venue that would host ???the biggest and most important music acts.???

Clerkson Checks Out
By Jeff Bercovici

Every lad has to grow up sometime. For Andy Clerkson of Dennis Publishing, that time will come at the end of March, when he steps down from his post as editorial director of the company he's served for 15 years. The occasion for his departure is the birth of his first child, due late February. Clerkson intends to finish out his contract with Dennis, then spend the summer at his home in Montauk, N.Y., with his wife, Caroline, and their newborn, before moving his family back to his native England.

"It was always our intention once we had the baby to move back to the U.K.," Clerkson told WWD Tuesday. "We didn't come to America for life."

Clerkson plans to work on projects for Dennis over the summer, but once he's in London, he will go into business for himself in a venture he said will be "not primarily in publishing." He added, "It's definitely time for me to branch out on my own."

AMI Misses Targets
By Keith J. Kelly
2/1/06
http://www.nypost.com/business/62665.htm

American Media will miss its rate base on six of its 12 publications for the second half of 2005 as the company moves to comply early with new stricter circulation rules.

But much of that miss will come because AMI boss David Pecker has opted to apply strict new circulation reporting rules six months earlier than the Audit Bureau of Circulations is requiring.

In the reporting period that ends in June, the Audit Bureau of Circulations said it will no longer allow publishers to count copies placed in gyms, saloons, doctors' offices or airports as paid circulation. Instead, it will be counted as non-paid circulation under a category termed "verified" circulation.

Double Team
By Carl Bialik

In the new pro-basketball fiction 'Foul Lines,' Sports Illustrated NBA writers Jack McCallum and Jon Wertheim shift the milieu to the nonexistent NBF. It's not the Los Angeles Lakers whose aloof star player struggles en route to a losing season, but the Los Angeles Lasers. And the book is hardly about basketball, but about the players' lives off the court. In particular, it's about how those lives intersect with the work of wunderkind team PR chief Jamal Kelly, an African-American Yale student and hoops junkie plucked by the team during his senior year, and dogged Los Angeles Times beat reporter Jilly Forrester. The world of strip clubs, drug use, publicist spin, scandal cover-up, and bling won't be unfamiliar to NBA fans, though the screenplay-ready prose is a long way from the typical SI article. (Disclosure: I'm friendly with Jon, and in 2000 I interned at Sports Illustrated's website.)

McCallum and Wertheim emailed with Gelf about why writing fiction is "exhilarating," why they don't expect NBA players to read their work, how email is an indispensable tool for co-authored books, and how they fell in love with one of their main characters. Here's an edited version of the interview:
