Mags Rock Bowl Parties
By Keith J. Kelly

$1M BASHES WILL CLASH
AS the Steelers and Sea hawks put the finishing touches on their game plans, three titans of the men's magazine field, Maxim, Playboy and Sports Illustrated, will clash tomorrow night in Detroit, trying to outshine and out buzz one another with their pre-Super Bowl bashes.

"It's a whole world of strategies that goes into these parties," said Dan Parente, a professional party planner who until this year was involved in staging Maxim's extravaganza. This year, he estimates most of the parties will be spending anywhere from high-six figures to $1 million.

"The Super Bowl beyond the game has become an entire entertainment extravaganza," said Rick McCabe, at Sports Illustrated, which is staging its party at the Emerald Theatre in Mount Clemens, about 20 minutes from downtown Detroit.

Not so Plain Jane: New editors taking over existing magazines have a safety net of sorts: the ability to blame their predecessors for the parts of the magazine that don't quite work. As of the March issue of Jane, on sale Feb. 21, Brandon Holley will be working without a net. It's the official relaunch issue for Holley, who replaced founding editor in chief Jane Pratt last August. With actress Kate Beckinsale on the cover, the issue showcases a new look, a variety of new sections and features and a substantially different approach to fashion.

The new approach, said Holley, is inspired by a change in the way Jane's target readers regard fashion: They're no longer embarrassed to care about it, as many were eight years ago, when Jane was new and the grunge ethic had yet to run its course. "Fashion has become less of a stigma," she said Thursday. "A twentysomething doesn't have to feel like a sellout for really wanting the Dior bag. A Jane girl can wear Marc Jacobs shoes and still be irreverent." (Jacobs, as it happens, is profiled in the March issue.)

MATRIMONIAL BLIP: How many editors in chief have clips from their weddings broadcast during prime time national television? This year, at least one. Details' Dan Peres could be glimpsed briefly during "In Style: Celebrity Weddings" on ABC Monday night, first smiling sheepishly at his bride, actress Sarah Wynter, as she walked down the aisle, and then dancing with Wynter at the reception. (Details, like WWD, is part of Cond?© Nast Publications.) Call it the Peres effect: In Style's annual special garnered its largest audience in four years and won its time slot among women aged 18 to 34. In an interesting move, this year ABC chose to air it before "The Bachelor: Paris" but after "Wife Swap." Because gooey celebrity love is exactly what you want to see after watching two ordinary strangers swap wives.

BACK IN THE RING: With a failed gadget magazine behind him, Tony Romando is once again trading on the preoccupations of adolescent males. Romando recently accepted a position as vice president of publishing for World Wrestling Entertainment, overseeing the company's two magazines, Raw and Smackdown. His first hires were three ex-staffers from Sync, the consumer technology magazine he edited until November, when parent Ziff Davis media shut it down. Their mandate, he says, is to make the titles' content reflect "the lifestyle of the WWE superstar" ("superstar" being the WWE's preferred term for "wrestler").

Two Women's Magazines Shift Focus to 'Millennials'
By Julie Bosman

To the untrained eye, women's magazines often tend to look alike: one colorful headline after another dispensing relationship tips and fashion dictums. But a closer look reveals a carefully bisected market that offers teenage girls titles like Seventeen and ElleGirl, while 30-somethings have more grown-up magazines like Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. Often left out of the mix are smart 20-something readers: the consumers that Brandon Holley, the new editor in chief of Jane, wants to lure to her newly revamped magazine.

Ms. Holley, who succeeded the magazine's founder, Jane Pratt, as editor in chief in August, says that Jane has always attracted a 20-something readership - but that its content sometimes sends mixed messages. Despite Jane's median reader age of 28, Ms. Holley said, the magazine put the actress Meg Ryan, who is in her 40's, on its cover in 2004. "So I said, if we're 28, we're really going to be 28," Ms. Holley said. "No more Meg Ryan."

Instead, the March issue of Jane - Ms. Holley's first official issue since she took over the job from Ms. Pratt - features the younger actress Kate Beckinsale on the cover. A poll on the magazine's Web site asks readers to write about "the high (and low) points of being in your 20's, like still having a fabulous metabolism and being wrinkle-free."

Summing Up the Dough
2/6/06
http://www.nypost.com/business/62994.htm

The more the world changes the more we need good investment advice. By that yardstick, there is no better time to review what the money mags are saying.

The March issue of Worth magazine features a cover story on how rebuilding the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina will redistribute wealth in the region. The article explores what effect a massive taxpayer-funded reconstruction effort will have on the wealthy - and whether they will be asked to shoulder a large portion of bringing the region back to life. Elsewhere, an interview with Tim Zagat, publisher of the ubiquitous restaurant guides, offers insight into tipping and details the toil of being in the restaurant business these days.

Picking stocks is tough, even if you read all the major business pubs. So why not throw your dough into mutual funds - run by a professional stock picker who isn't tied down to certain sectors like large cap or growth stocks?

Time Inc.'s task: covering Mr. Parsons

Time Inc. has endured headline-generating layoffs and sagging morale. Now Time Warner's publishing division has to tackle yet another unenviable task.

Fortune (business) and Time (news) have to decide what their approach will be to cover the increasingly bitter battle between billionaire corporate raider Carl Icahn and Dick Parsons, aka The Boss. Depending on whose growth strategy prevails, the direction of Time Warner may be at stake.

"It's a sensational battle," Fortune's Andy Serwer wrote in a Jan. 30 story published on the CNNMoney.com Web site.

THE GREENING OF MAGAZINES: Given the tons of paper pulp that magazines consume each year, publishing wouldn't seem to qualify as an environmentally friendly business. But Elle disagrees. The magazine is going green for its May issue, which will be guest edited by Laurie David, wife of Larry David and a trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council. Copies will be printed on recycled paper - Aveda is underwriting part of the cost - and the focus will be on global health stories and beauty and fashion products that are safe for the environment.

SISTER ACT: Teen People was not spared in the latest round of personnel cuts at Time Inc. Those let go last week included fashion director Jorge Ramon, a reporter/researcher, and the title's three-person public relations department. They were part of a 66-person cull, the second in two months for Time Inc.

Meanwhile, sources close to Teen People are whispering the magazine's upcoming Ashlee Simpson cover, said to be slated for the June/July issue, is a make-good of sorts necessitated by friction over the December/January cover. That issue featured Ashlee and her sister, Jessica, posing together on the cover in what was billed as their first joint appearance in a magazine. According to a number of sources, however, the Simpsons agreed to the shoot on the explicit understanding that they would appear separately on the cover. The issue was to be published in a "flip-over" format, with two covers - one for each sister - which would receive equal amounts of newsstand display. When new managing editor Lori Majewski decided she'd rather run a single cover with both Simpsons on it, she ran into determined resistance from their publicists, Brad Caferelli, then representing Jessica, and Rob Shuter, representing Ashlee. (Shuter now represents both sisters.) "It was a very intense negotiation," said a source with knowledge of the talks. "You could tell it was Lori's first cover as managing editor. What should have been very simple became very complex because of the magazine constantly changing their mind as to what they wanted."

Web Readers Hit the Books Less Frequently

Internet users are more likely to cut back on reading books than to curtail their magazine consumption, according to a recently released survey by Jupiter Research.

The finding contradicts the long-held assumption that periodicals are more vulnerable than books to competition from the Internet.

David Card, a senior analyst for Jupiter Research, said that books and magazines suffered differently from online competition.

Golf Mag Handicaps for the Future
By Stephanie D. Smith
2/6/06
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001957385

Magazine genres of all stripes--from general interest to life- style--are increasingly feeling pressure to extend their reach beyond the printed page to build both profits and brand equity. Whether it's Seventeen partnering with MTV for reality show Miss Seventeen or Maxim maximizing its brand with mobile offerings, publishers are always seeking new ways to capture eyeballs.

One of the latest to do so is Time4 Media's Golf Magazine, which last month added monster-size portal Golf.com to its portfolio thanks to an acquisition by parent Time Inc. Now, armed with the largest online reach of golf fanatics, a spinoff magazine and a television show in the works, the 1.4 million-circulation Golf Magazine is repositioning itself as a multiplatform destination for duffers.

"Golf Magazine is becoming a content company. We want to be all things golf," said publisher Chris Wightman. "We're trying to deliver quality golf content however and wherever our audience demands it, [whether] at an event or on a cell phone."
