******* It's journalists reading their own non-fiction! These mini-memoirs are too personal to be read out loud, but they're doing it anyway. On February 28, writers and editors from mags like Celebrity Living, In Touch, Gotham and more will be reading their own work at Mo Pitkins House of Satisfaction. There's music, too! Hosted by sleazy tabloid journalist Deborah Baer. Tix are $10, show starts at 8:30. For more info, email scratchitnyc@yahoo.com or visit www.mopitkins.com.
******* In a display of grand corporate theater, Bruce Wasserstein and Carl C. Icahn shared a podium yesterday to step up their indictment of the management of Time Warner Inc. and argue their rationale for breaking the company into four separately traded public companies. The occasion was the unveiling of a much-anticipated report by Mr. Wasserstein's investment bank, Lazard, prepared on behalf of an investor group led by Mr. Icahn that holds 3.3 percent of Time Warner's shares. The report argues - as Mr. Icahn has - that breaking up the company and buying back a large portion of its stock would increase Time Warner's long-stagnant share price from its closing price yesterday of $18.36 to as much as $26.57. Based on Time Warner's market capitalization, such an increase would add some $40 billion in value to the company. MORE ONLINE 2.New York Post4 Million-Dollar Baby By Keith J. Kelly 2/8/06 http://www.nypost.com/business/63147.htm THE birth of the world's sexiest baby is still two or more months away, but already the celebrity magazines are preparing to bid heavily for the first photos of the offspring of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Some sources think that the war could end up breaking the old record set by the photos from Catherine Zeta Jones' wedding to Michael Douglas, won by OK! in 2000, or the more recent Britney Spears baby photo that People snagged. "Those two magazines are just going to bid it up into the millions," said one editor who is sitting it out. "It could end up being the biggest photo sale of all time." The price tag could reach $4 million. MORE ONLINE 3. New York ObserverBuckle Your Belts, It's Going to Be Glossy Page Six By Gabriel Sherman 2/8/06 http://www.nyobserver.com/20060213/20060213_Gabriel_Sherman_pageone_offtherec.asp Just asking: What new entry in the crowded and antagonistic celebrity-glossy field is making rivals polite and circumspect? ???We wish them the best of luck,??? said American Media editorial director Bonnie Fuller and her boss, David Pecker, through a spokesperson on Feb. 7. Ms. Fuller and Mr. Pecker were responding-or not responding-to the planned Feb. 9 debut of Page Six, the magazine. Having long since severed its bonds to the actual sixth page of the New York Post, the rough-and-tumble daily gossip column is now transcending newsprint completely, in the form of a 76-page spin-off magazine. MORE ONLINE 4. WWDFord's Entourage By Sara James and Jeff Bercovici 2/8/06 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/104204 If there's ever a Tom Ford biopic, Jeremy Piven might want to audition for the lead. During a recent cover test of Vanity Fair's March Hollywood issue, which shows guest editor Ford posing with Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson, at least one respondent mistook Ford for the "Entourage" star. The person wrote, "I don't know who that guy on the cover is. He looks like Jeremy Piven." (In fact, Piven has his own March cover - Cargo - for which he clearly stole Ford's signature look.) Vanity Fair tested covers with Ford and with just the two naked women but, according to a Cond?© Nast executive, the Ford cover got better scores. MORE ONLINE 5. Min OnlineWhat Magazines Are On Your iPOD? By Steve Smith 2/7/06 http://www.minonline.com/topstory2.htm Are your print staffers ready for their sound check...maybe even their close-up? The phenomenal popularity of the iPod gives the podcast platform the attention it well deserves, and we are happy to say that some magazines are tossing their staffs into the new medium. I have been filling my iPod with scores of audio/video podcast extensions of print brands in recent months, and some of these magazines are exploring genuinely refreshing editorial zones. For magazines with on-site audio and video or existing relationships with cable tv or radio, pod and vodcasting is a natural venue to repurpose assets. At Cond?© Nast, Allure is wisely moving snippets from its Style Network Backstage Beauty special to iTunes along with audio beauty tips. Gentlemen's Quarterly 's December Men of the Year par?¬ty produced a great short video that shot to the top of the iTunes charts for a while. One-year-old Make ( makezine.com) has a huge slate of audio and video that walk users through their odd do-it-yourself tech projects (min, March 21, 2005). Both TV Guide ( TV Guide Talk) and Newsweek ( Newsweek on Air) have polished, long-form, radio programs that do a great job of showcasing the deep bench of critical and journalistic talent at both pubs.
