Memo Pad: Harper's, Without Its Queen
By Samantha Conti
February 9, 2006
http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/104253

Britain's new-generation Harper's Bazaar, formerly Harpers and Queen, hits U.K. newsstands today ??” and it's about time, said editor Lucy Yeomans. "People see Queen, and they think of a little old lady with corgis in a castle. The name no longer reflected what ??” and who ??” we are," said Yeomans. "And the Sloane Ranger legacy has dogged us since the Eighties."

The magazine was launched in Britain in 1929 as Harper's Bazaar, and in 1970 it merged with the utterly cool and youth-driven magazine Queen. In the Eighties, it was famous for its racy society pages and its coverage of the Sloane Rangers, a term coined by contributing editor Peter York. The March issue marks the birth of the 21st Harper's Bazaar worldwide, and the magazine has a logo similar to its U.S. sister's.

In the British version, however, the Harper's lettering is big ??” and the apostrophe is back ??” while the Bazaar is tiny. Over the next few years that, too, will change, and the logo will look more like that of its sister additions'. "This is evolution, not revolution," said Yeomans, who's wooed a fresh pack of photographers and contributors to the title.

Travel Glossies to Close
By Keith J. Kelly
February 9, 2006
http://www.nypost.com/business/61584.htm

The travel magazines relaunched barely a year ago by the late liquor baron Sidney Frank are shutting down, just one month after the Jagermeister billionaire died. Travel Savvy, which Frank purchased for $750,000, and Business Traveler, which he bought for $500,000, were both closed yesterday. About 25 staffers are being tossed out of work.

One insider blamed the closure on estate laws governing charitable trusts. Apparently, risky, money-losing ventures are frowned upon when the assets are controlled by a charitable trust. Frank had put what is believed to be several million dollars into both magazines after the purchase, but they continued to bleed red ink.

After Frank's death, staffers had hoped that his daughter Cathy Halstead would move from her vice chairman's job and run the company from the West Coast as chairman. That hope soared when Frank's granddaughter, Alexandra Frank, showed up two weeks ago as the company's newest assistant editor. The Frank family had pledged to fully support the magazines. But yesterday, staffers got the bad news ??” albeit along with what one insider said were fairly generous severance packages of three months apiece.

DMA Circ Day: Cosmo Girl Talks Covers to Circulators
By Mickey Alam Khan
February 8, 2006
http://www.dmnews.com/cgi-bin/artprevbot.cgi?article_id=35620

Kate White was glad she attended the 20th Annual DMA Circulation Day yesterday. The editor-in-chief of 2-million-circulation Cosmopolitan magazine was the luncheon keynote speaker at the circulators' event. She was a bold choice for an event accustomed to discussing rate bases, auto renewals and gift subscriptions. "If I wasn't here, I'd be working on cover lines like 'Mattress Moves So Hot His Thighs Will Go Up in Flames,'" White said.

The Hearst executive decided to devote her time to covers and cover lines, a topic that resonates as much with editorial departments as with direct and interactive marketing copywriters and art directors. She acknowledged that the past few years were brutal for newsstand sales. Most titles reported falling sales, bar the celebrity books. Covers, therefore, are a paramount selling tool.

The audience was treated to a rundown of the seven best things White knew about covers. Her first guideline was to follow the 80/20 rule: 80 percent of the great ideas come from 20 percent of your staff, she said. Though the cover is a small part of the magazine, she spends two weeks a month on cover lines and collaborates with her art director on images. For example, White retains control over the cover model's dress, and not the celebrity. She and the art director also spend lots of time choosing the background color for the shot.

Time's Chief Plots a Digital-Age Transformation
By Brian Steinberg
February 8, 2006
http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB113936665818167990-KKgb7hAVTohq9_9uDoTr5VgvffY_20060215.html

Time Inc.'s recent decision to lay off 171 workers, including some top managers, was the clearest sign yet of how the changing media and advertising landscape is buffeting some of the biggest names in the business. Growth of the Internet and an array of other digital technologies has forced the company, home to such magazines as Time, Fortune, Sports Illustrated and People, to rethink how it does business.

These new technologies are transforming the way people consume media, freeing them to read magazine articles on their computers or on an array of portable devices -- often free of charge. Advertisers, confronted with a fragmenting audience, are showing less interest in traditional media outlets.

Time Inc.'s goal in this new environment, says Ann Moore, its chairman and chief executive, is to become a provider of content that can appear in any medium readers might choose. She says the layoffs at her company reflected her desire to realign resources in the Time Warner Inc. unit's 13,000-plus work force. "I want to get rid of work that we don't need anymore, and I want to then hire in areas where we are going to grow," says the 55-year-old executive, who had her biggest success while head of the company's People division.

Nat. Mag. Awards Sked as Evening Event
By Stephanie D. Smith

For the first time in the event's 40-year history, the National Magazine Awards will be an evening gala held on May 9 in New York at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The event, also known as the "Ellies"--a nod to the elephant-shaped bronze statues presented to the winners--is traditionally a luncheon held at the tony Waldorf-Astoria. The event honors outstanding achievements in magazine publishing.

The change in time and location will likely bring more glitz and glamour to this year's event. The National Magazine Awards were founded in 1966 by the American Society of Magazine Editors and is sponsored by ASME in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
