******* Most of the buzz about Vanity Fair's hyper-hyped photo essay "Tom Ford's Hollywood" focuses on the cover picture, which features actress Scarlett Johansson's doughy, cherubic keister, white as a fish belly. But personally I prefer the surrealistically goofy photo inside that shows a bosom the size of a zeppelin perched on a golf course, threatening Garth Fisher, MD, who is not only a hotshot Hollywood plastic surgeon but also a guy who played a hotshot Hollywood plastic surgeon on ABC's "Extreme Makeover." Jolie lying in a bathtub in what looks like lime Jell-O, displaying the various tattoos on her back, one of which inexplicably says "Know Your Rights," although that's hardly the most interesting part of her. (No) Escape From New York By Jeff Bercovici 2/14/06 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/104364 OK DOWNSIZES: OK's price isn't the only thing that's shrinking. The fledgling celebrity weekly is also reducing its trim size, just in time for a 13-week trial run at a new cover price $1.99, (down from $3.29). The issue that goes on newsstands this week will measure 9- by 11.25-inches ??” bigger than the 8.5- by 10.5-inches typical of other weeklies, but smaller than the 12- by 9.5-inches it started out with. While competitors speculated the move was aimed at saving on paper costs, Christian Toksvig, OK's chief executive officer, said it was necessary to fix a distribution snafu. "The problem we were having is that, just purely physically, it was so hard in certain places to get the magazine in the racks," he said, adding that some retailers had given up trying to shelve OK alongside other weeklies. "Obviously, there is a very small paper savings, but in the big scheme of things it's not something we're looking at as a savings tool." As to whether scaling OK down will detract from its distinctiveness in a crowded market, he said, "The size reduction is so small I don't think any reader will notice it." (NO) ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK: Remember that new magazine about culture and travel James Truman is developing for LTB Media? It's going to be called ??” drumroll, please ??” Culture & Travel. LTB went public Monday with its plans for the launch, which include two issues in 2006 and an initial circulation of 60,000. Michael Boodro, formerly of Elle D?©cor, The New York Times and Vogue, will be the editor, as reported last week by WWD. "It's both for the art world insider, and also, perhaps, a larger circle around that of people who, through travel, are interested in exploring [culture]," said Truman, who spent 11 years as editorial director of Cond?© Nast Publications, leaving in January 2005. (WWD is a unit of Cond?© Nast.) "It's for people who are tired of going to the beach." MORE ONLINE 3. Smith 2/13/06 http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/search/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001995777 Over the course of six years, three editors have attempted to renovate Hearst Magazines??™ House Beautiful: Lou Gropp, Marian McEvoy and Mark Mayfield. And while each applied their own vision to the magazine, collectively their efforts have failed to take the shelter monthly to new heights. Paid circulation since 2000 has remained essentially flat, levelling off in the first half of 2005 at 855,527, according to Audit Bureau of Circulations. Newsstand sales in first-half ??™05 plunged 17.6 percent to 82,890. Meanwhile, rival House & Garden, published 10 times yearly by Cond?© Nast, saw paid circ in ??™05??™s first half jump 3.4 percent to 920,154. Now Stephen Drucker, a former contributor to Cond?© Nast??™s Architectural Digest and president/editor in chief of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia??™s Living, hopes to breathe new life into the title. Effective with the March issue, House Beautiful will incorporate a cleaner, more direct approach with headlines, additional service and news you can use. ???My goal is to create a magazine for the way people really read,??? said Drucker. ???I hope people feel as if they??™ve had a conversation with an expert.???
