With no buyer, Budget Living closes
By Abigail Azote
02/15/06
http://medialifemagazine.com/artman/publish/article_2884.asp

When it launched almost four years ago, it was much-talked-about, as a magazine that seemed to have everything going for it. The idea was ripe--smart people living chic cheap--and it had a big publishing name behind it, Don Welsh, who previously had launched Budget Travel.

Yesterday, at the end of a 60-day find-a-new-owner-or-else deadline, Budget Living announced it was closing, despite numerous awards, including a National Magazine Award, and a strong base of readers.

No buyers had come forth willing to pay Welsh's asking price, which has not been disclosed. Some 50 staff members on the editorial and business sides will be on the streets. Its March issue, due out this week, is its last.

Big investors don't have time for Time Warner breakup
By Paul R. La Monica
2/15/06
http://money.cnn.com/2006/02/14/news/companies/timewarner_icahn/index.htm

It has been a week since billionaire activist shareholder Carl Icahn and investment bank Lazard proposed that media giant Time Warner be split into four companies. Yet so far, several big shareholders of Time Warner (Research) have said they are not impressed with Icahn's plan.

"I have to echo the comments of those who would argue this plan is dead on arrival," said Mario Gabelli, chairman and CEO of money management firm GAMCO Investors, which owns about 15.4 million shares of Time Warner, according to data from FactSet Research. "It's got no zip to it. We need to see something else."

Icahn heads a group that controls more than 3 percent of Time Warner's shares and hopes to take over control of the company's board through a proxy fight at its next shareholder meeting later this year. But in order to do so, he's going to need to attract more support from large institutional owners of the stock.

The mobizine: Think mobile magazine
By Heidi Dawley
2/15/06
http://medialifemagazine.com/artman/publish/article_2885.asp

There is no question the mobile phone is the thing of the hour for content providers and advertisers. The question is rather how best to offer content and ads.

In Britain, Conde Nast's GQ and Glamour are the latest magazines to try what's becoming the new hot way to reach their readers.

Both titles are launching so-called mobizines, a miniversion of the magazine for downloading onto a mobile phone. These mobizines hold the promise of giving magazines and advertisers another way of reaching their audience.

Atlantic Owner Hires New Team As If For Himself
By Gabriel Sherman

http://observer.com/20060220/20060220_Gabriel_Sherman_pageone_offtherec.asp

???[I]t's really hard to match you,??? eHarmony.com founder Neil Clark Warren tells Atlantic writer Lori Gottlieb in the magazine's current cover story. ???You're too bright. You're too thoughtful. The biggest thing you've got to do when you're gifted like you are is to be patient.???

David Bradley, The Atlantic's owner, appears to be taking that advice to heart: The magazine still has no editor in chief, despite a months-long search.

The Atlantic is now ensconced in its second-floor suite at the Watergate, having completed its move to Washington from its 149-year home in Boston. The new March edition, with Robert Doisneau's dorm-room staple Le Baiser de l'H??tel de Ville on the front, was the first one fully assembled in D.C.
