Sporting News Is Formally Seeking a Buyer
By Julie Bosman

Paul G. Allen, one of the founders of Microsoft, is officially seeking a buyer for The Sporting News magazine and its related properties, the company is set to announce today.

While The Sporting News remains a venerable brand in its category, the 120-year-old weekly magazine faces challenges as it looks for a buyer. The Sporting News has long stood a distant third to Sports Illustrated, which is published by Time Warner, and ESPN The Magazine, published by the magazine division of the Walt Disney Company.

In the last six months of 2005, Sports Illustrated had an average circulation of 3.23 million, while ESPN magazine had a circulation of 1.89 million, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. The Sporting News trailed with a circulation of 715,767. And the magazine's specialty as a publisher of reliable sports data has been rendered less relevant by the wide availability of statistics on the Internet.

Sporting News Is Formally Seeking a Buyer

Time Inc. has Fortune to tell you how to run a business and Money to tell you how to manage a portfolio.

Until now, they've never had a publication that encourages you to undermine your workplace. That all changes tomorrow with the debut of Office Pirates, its new online 'zine.

The twisted humor site parodies the absurdities of office life, especially as seen by guys in their 20s and 30s.

Steve DeLuca Exits Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone publisher Steve DeLuca was let go after a dispute with Jann Wenner, Wenner Media chairman and Rolling Stone editor in chief, over the location of a party for Rolling Stone's 1,000th issue, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The dispute arose when DeLuca learned that a party slate for May had been downgraded after moving from Rockefeller Center to the smaller venue of Hammerstein Ballroom. DeLuca balked, noting that he had secured advertisers based on the Rockefeller Center location.

A press release confirmed DeLuca's departure, but stated that the publisher and Wenner Media agreed to part ways at the completion of his two-year contract.

Memo Pad: Graydon, Greenie
By Jeff Bercovici

Elle apparently isn't the only magazine to have the idea of publishing a "green" issue to coincide with Earth Day, which falls on April 22. Two sources within Cond?© Nast Publications said Vanity Fair also was planning to focus its May issue on the environment, printing it on recycled paper and featuring a bevy of eco-friendly celebrities on the cover.

Those said to be in talks to appear include George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio (who interviewed then-president Bill Clinton in 2000 for an Earth Day special on ABC) and former vice president Al Gore. A Vanity Fair spokeswoman declined to comment, saying the magazine does not discuss upcoming issues.

An editor in chief of a magazine that competes with Vanity Fair and Elle questioned the idea, saying, "How can an issue be ???green' when you only sell a quarter of the product you produce?" As it happens, Vanity Fair is relatively environmentally sound on that score, selling through at close to 50 percent on the newsstand, well above the industry average. But its editor in chief, Graydon Carter, does have a well-documented fondness for tooling around Manhattan in an SUV.

Man ???Zines Madness

2/20/06
http://www.nypost.com/business/63819.htm

Men's magazines are breaking away from their usual fare of too-cool-for-you fashion spreads and adding decidedly stranger fare. "Why," Details magazine asks, "would a normal, healthy man want to slice off his testicles?" Our bet: He wouldn't. That said, the magazine tells us that fetishists, pervs and fashionistas gone wacky are embracing castration. Good for them. Now stop telling us about it. Details, as only it can, comes out in defense of the love that is Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, saying that the now on-the-rocks couple is more familiar to us than the runaway heat of Brangelina.

That it took 132 pages flipping through GQ to find something to read besides an ad is a commercial testament to its status as the bible of the men's titles. It stays there because it lets Tom Carson trash the evolution of "The Sopranos," and soon after, gives readers a chilling feature on Lamb and Lynx Gaede, the teenybopper race warriors who are the band Blue Prussia. It also has helpful fashion hints and informs us that Wayfarers are back in style. By the time we got to cover boy Matthew Fox, though, our heads hurt.

Just when you think all Men's Health has to offer is 10 tips for rock-hard abs, the magazine surprises you with an issue like this month's. Among the mature bright spots: a story on military medics in Iraq and a quick, fun piece on the qualities a man might want in a girl friend (and none of them are body parts). Even the workout stuff ??” which typically borders on eating disorders and bench- press fanaticism ??” is strong and simple.

The Right Path: CNNMoney Sees Traffic Surge
By Mike Shields
2/20/06
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002035040

Since the Internet became a mass medium over a decade ago, magazine publishers have struggled to find the best way to translate their product into a space that is populated with free and immediate content. While scores of publishers have experimented with many different models and formats, one company has generally personified the industry??™s Web-related frustrations: Time Inc.

From the disaster that was Pathfinder in the mid ??™90s to dissolved partnerships (read: CNNSI.com) to abandoned subscription walls, the print giant has hardly proved a model of Internet success. Yet with the relaunch of CNNMoney.com??”which on Jan. 9 merged the Web sites for CNNMoney, Fortune.com, Business2.0.com and FSB.com (Fortune Small Business) into a single site??”Time Inc. 2.0 may have been launched.

It??™s early, but the new site has seen its traffic surge. Time Inc., which had been criticized by some for consolidating Web properties in the midst of a red-hot online ad market, is enjoying praise from observers for its risky move to combine multiple magazines??™ Web operations into a single editorial entity.
