******* BURGERS 'N PINTS 'N EDITORS in LA
: NYC BOOK CLUB:
******* # Details When I had coffee recently with a man in his mid-20s who wanted some career advice, he told me that he was "addicted" to something called Ed2010. I'd heard of the site--it was started several years back by some low-level wage slaves who thought they should be sitting in the corner office by the year 2010 and wanted to network with other low-level wage slaves who were just as brazenly ambitious. >"What do you get out of that site?" I asked him. >"Basically I'm constantly hitting RELOAD on the job-listings page," he told me and then named all the other job sites he checks "obsessively, all day long." Um, yeah, swell. Dude was coming to me hoping I'd hook him up with an interview, and here he's telling me that he's a distracted, self-absorbed, useless twit who checks job boards all day long. Emily Listfield, the editor-in-chief for nearly six years, is out. During her tenure the magazine's circulation jumped from 1,050,000 to 1.5 million, but there were problems aplenty, including the ouster of the CEO that hired her, a major circulation problem and finally a sale. In the most recent six-month period, the magazine's newsstand sales were off 17.3 percent to 244,000 compared to a year ago. "It was a wild ride," said Listfield, reached at home yesterday. She apparently did not survive the arrival of Mike Lafavore as the new editorial director of Meredith last fall.

JANN Wenner has been even pricklier than usual since his longtime deputy, Kent Brownridge, left late last year, Wenner Media insiders say. One company mole notes: "Jann is a nightmare to [Us Weekly editrix] Janice Min. He second-guesses her every decision. The funny thing is, the covers he doesn't mess with sell well." Worse, word circulated that Min, who is pregnant with her second child, will "get little to no maternity leave," claims our insider. "She was back in the office a week after having her first child." A Wenner spokeswoman insisted that Min would get maternity leave and added: "Jann is involved in all aspects of the three Wenner Media titles and his direction is integral to the continued success of these magazines." MORE ONLINE 4. WWDLadding Go By Jeff Bercovici 2/22/06 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/104543 There's a fine line between sticking with a winning formula and becoming formulaic. On the eve of a milestone, Maxim has concluded it's in danger of crossing over. The April issue, on sale March 21, will be the 100th for Maxim, whose 1997 launch marked the beginning of an era for U.S. men's magazines. Its cover, consisting of text against a holographic background, will be the first not to feature a (typically bodacious) woman, according to editor in chief Ed Needham. (The magazine has, on two occasions, featured a cartoon on the cover, but both times it was a woman: Marge Simpson in April 2004 and an original Frank Miller drawing inspired by the film "Sin City" in May 2005). The May issue will showcase Maxim's first major redesign. To hear Needham tell it, the title's early success bred a certain amount of inertia surrounding its appearance. "All magazines desire to find their groove, but if you stay in the groove too long, you suffer from over-familiarity," he said. "I think that's perhaps what's happened with Maxim. One issue started to feel a little too similar to the next." TAKING THE HIGH ROAD: It turns out Vanity Fair editor in chief Graydon Carter's automotive preference is not actually at odds with his intention (reported Tuesday by WWD, although unconfirmed by the magazine) to publish a "green" issue in May. Or at least it won't be for long. Carter has often been seen disembarking from a large, champagne-hued sports utility vehicle. He claims, however, the gas-guzzler is a necessity, not a luxury. "I actually don't like driving around in an SUV," he said via e-mail. "But I have four tall kids, a wife and a dog. When I went shopping for a car, there was no hybrid that could hold us all. There is now: a Toyota with seating for seven. And when my lease is up next year, I'm switching to that." If he goes through with it, Carter - who gave up cigarettes last year - will truly be doing his part to clear the air. MANAGING EXPECTATIONS: What could be even more exciting for Glamour than winning its first National Magazine Award for general excellence in 14 years, as it did last year? How about winning two back-to-back? MORE ONLINE 5. I Want MediaMichael Wolff: 'Big Media Doesn't Make Anybody Happy' By Patrick Phillips 2/22/06 http://www.iwantmedia.com/people/people56.html Vanity Fair's media columnist insists that a breakup of Time Warner is inevitable, foresees most newspapers going out of business, and warns the media world to brace for more "upheaval, displacement, destabilization." Five years ago this month I Want Media posted its first Q&A interview, with Michael Wolff, the acerbic and influential media columnist for New York magazine. In the interview, Wolff argued that, since many consumers weren't paying for online content, "the Internet as media has failed," and predicted the ultimate demise of stand-alone news sites like Inside.com. In a rare move, Drudge Report posted a link to the Wolff interview; Jim Cramer, the co-founder of TheStreet.com, expressed outrage on Romenesko over the remarks. MORE ONLINE 6. Media LifeFinally, celebrity magazines cool off By Dan Weil 2/22/06 http://medialifemagazine.com/artman/publish/article_2993.asp As recently as a year ago, it looked as though there was no such thing as too many celebrity titles, as one after the next seemed to launch and then shortly after raise its rate base. Then in November Inside TV was abruptly closed, and the British import OK! was foundering. Suddenly, the sense was that there were too many celebrity titles for the readers out there. That sense was affirmed yesterday with the latest numbers from the Audit Bureau of Circulations. They show that growth in the celebrity magazine category is finally starting to slow down. MORE ONLINE 7. New York PostMichael Wolff: 'Big Media Doesn't Make Anybody Happy' By Keith J. Kelly 2/21/06 http://www.nypost.com/business/63936.htm Time Inc. has Fortune to tell you how to run a business and Money to tell you how to manage a portfolio. Until now, they've never had a publication that encourages you to undermine your workplace. That all changes tomorrow with the debut of Office Pirates, its new online 'zine. MORE ONLINE
