Memo Pad: Ready Or Knot ... A Healthy Start
By Jeff Bercovici

READY OR KNOT: The matrimony-obsessed minds at TheKnot.com have been awfully busy lately, and not just because peak wedding season is coming up. In the next few months, the New York-based wedding guide company will launch two magazines ??” one a partnership with American Express Publishing, and the other a print version of The Nest, its advice site for newlyweds. "Our goal is to be wherever a bride and a newlywed might be longing for information," said David Liu, The Knot's chief executive officer.

First out of the gate will be Travel + Romance, a collaboration between The Knot and Travel + Leisure, which is owned by American Express. The first issue, out in April, will be sent to 500,000 members of The Knot and subscribers of Travel + Leisure. It also will be distributed in bookstores and other retail outlets. T+L's style director, Laura Begley, will serve as editor in chief, while T+L editor in chief Nancy Novogrod will oversee the print product and Knot editor in chief Carley Roney will be in charge of the Web site. Current plans call for an annual frequency.

A HEALTHY START: Rodale seems to think it has a hit on its hands in Women's Health. The new fitness-and-lifestyle magazine, a spin-off of Men's Health, unveiled plans for a pair of rate base increases this week: an increase from 400,000 to 600,000 with the July-August issue, and then another, to 750,000, in January 2007. Publisher Kate Kelly Smith said the first jump was originally slated for the end of the year, but moved up owing to stronger-than-expected consumer response.

Looking for a *responsible* female to take over room in a great apartment (lease begins MAY 1, but we would sign lease before end of March). It's a 2-bedroom South Slope apartment with access to courtyard in the back. I've lived there for the past year and it's a great place that I want to stay in. I have a cute lil rat terrier so you must love dogs (probably can't have any more pets, though). Credit check required to sign. I write for a trade paper and a local music magazine. I'm pretty easygoing; you should be too. Your rent would be $850, plus utilities, cable and internet. Vegetarian a plus and newbies to the area are fine. Please email brooklynnyapt@yahoo.com for more details. Thanks!

Ed hears ...

... that Allure is no longer accepting applications for any Editorial Assistant positions. Period.

... that Shecky's Bar, Club & Lounge Guide is seeking New York City-based freelancers who can meet deadlines and write nightlife reviews with a sharp tongue. Please send a short, relevant, funny writing sample to editors@sheckys.com. No phone calls please. OK to mention Ed.

... that two consumer magazines (yes, this is a blind listing) seek an extremely detail-oriented, organized and creative freelance market editor to oversee products for the magazines. Not required to be in the office every day. Must have consumer magazine market editor experience! Must have a good eye for color themes and unique vibrant products. Must have a passion for stuff and think outside the box, but keeps one foot in the box. Must be willing to work very closely with two busy editors in chief. The market editor will request samples from busy fashion buyers for fashion shoots and busy manufacturers for still life product shoots-whatever the product. The market editor will traffic all the merchandise, keep very detailed spreadsheets of what merchandise was requested vs. received vs. sent back. The market editor will also gather the credits for all the products once the stories have been shot. The market editor must be persistent, yet not annoying, when it comes to calling in product. This person will have to be VERY thorough and very specific and will need to communicate with the editors regularly. (I know; it's a hard job!) The market editor must know fashion and brand names. This person should be creative enough to perhaps have to wing it when calling stuff in. To apply, send a resume as a Word document (your last name should be the name of the document!) and three references to marketeditor@yahoo.com (OK to mention Ed)

... that a Spring/Summer 2006 pilot magazine (based in London, but will work via email) is looking for creative writers with a unique flair to write articles. Topics can range from fashion, food, travel and gadgets to cooking and health. The magazine has a broad appeal so different articles are being sort after. Articles that relate to travel or holidays are also required. 700 words + also looking for short gripping fictional stories, both for adults and kids. The project is unpaid but all writers used will recieve a copy of the magazine. Use of article/story will be confirmed via email. If interested, please email a writing sample or unique, witty pitch to qualite@hotmail.co.uk (OK to mention Ed)

... that SparkNotes.com, an educational website for the high school and college-aged audience, seeks freelance writers for its community weblog. Graphically-driven, intelligent, and edgy, our site sits comfortably in a smart, teen-centered niche between sites like Bolt and College Humor. If you're looking to get started in the YA field, this is a great opportunity to write directly to your audience and get paid. We cover topics ranging from television, music, movies, and games, to books, art, education, and language. The main thing to think about while pitching or writing your piece is How is this interesting to the average high school kid? Our take on television or movies is smarter than the average teen fare, but it's teen fare nonetheless. We like a little fluff, but we remain true to our roots by publishing pieces of educational interest, too. As a rule, steer clear of anything too politicized or flammable. Our tone is relaxed, but smart. We're currently accepting queries for articles from between 100 and 700 words on any topic of interest to the teen population. Contact us at web@sparknotes.com, and be sure to use "Freelance" as the subject. Include in your email a brief cover letter pitching your idea, and a short writing sample. (Best not to mention Ed)

... that Niche Media, which publishes Gotham, Hamptons, LA Confidential, Boston Common, Capitol File and Aspen Peak is looking for a designer and two art directors for their NY office. Send resumes to nicolen@nichemediallc.com. Designers should have magazine layout experience. Don't mention Ed.

Internships

... that House Beautiful magazine is seeking a decorating intern. He/she would assist the Decorating editors with administrative tasks: filing press kits, sending back project proposals, returning product samples, answering reader mail, and potentially assisting on photo shoots. House Beautiful has a relatively small staff and that means a closer look at how magazines really work. Must be a hard worker and very organized. Interest in interior design is a plus. This is a fairly flexible two day a week internship with a start date in early March. It is unpaid and we can only accept candidates who would be working in return for college credit. Please send resumes and cover letters to aecollins@hearst.com. OK to mention Ed2010.
