Creating a Clamor: The struggle to keep a Blue magazine humming in a Red state

The Fed Ex guy stopped. He put down his deliveries. He wanted to say something. He pulled out his clipboard and asked the recipient to sign. He looked around the office, at nearly every square inch covered in messages of protest and resistance, at the stark stencil art and posters listing 20 places the United States has bombed since World War II. He had wanted to say something, and so he said it.

"You don't support the war?"
Jason Kucsma looked up.
"Uh, no. Not really, no."
"Bet you don't like Bush."
Safe bet.

Then again, George W. Bush is the least of Kucsma's concerns. The man is running a deeply political activist magazine that sees politicians as dead ends, useless to anyone who wants to get anything of value accomplished. Yet Kucsma's far from cynical. Say the President's name to him, or start a sentence with "This Administration," or perhaps, simply say the letter W.

ABJECT APOLOGIES MEDIA GUY IS WAITING ON ...
C??™mon Guys, Some of You Need to Step Up and Say, 'My Bad'

Perhaps you??™ve heard about how a certain someone who shot a certain hunting buddy of his in the face failed to discuss the accident or apologize for it promptly enough for the media??™s liking. Yes, in the age of the 24/7 news cycle, everything should happen instantly: the f***-up, the press conference, the ???sorry,??? the redemption.

Which is why I??™m shocked and appalled that certain members of the media who have recently participated in their own horrific mishaps have yet to beg forgiveness. Maybe it??™s slipped their minds? That??™s why I??™m here: to remind them to say ???Whoops, my bad!???

(By the way, for the record, like Dick Cheney, I had a beer at lunch before engaging in this little hunting trip. But right now, as I write this column -- in case Brit Hume is wondering -- I??™m more or less sober.)

ABSOLUTELY FINISHED: Employees of the luxury magazine Absolute know the generosity of the very rich is sometimes subject to caprice. They learned it all over again on Friday, when the magazine's principal investor, Domingo Cuadra, informed the staff he was pulling the plug on the American edition of Absolute, effective immediately. Cuadra's terse announcement, relayed through his law firm, left it unclear whether anyone on the staff of 26 will receive severance, or even whether the March issue, already printed, will be distributed. Editor in chief Andrew Essex, who left Details in 2004 to head up Absolute's launch in the U.S., said he had indications at the start of the year the magazine's future was in doubt, but had recently "received verbal assurances we were moving full-steam ahead," allaying his concerns.

HEADY ROOM: BlackBook is getting into the custom publishing business - and it's clear there's some deep thinking behind the venture. This summer, it will publish the first issue of Room 100, a culture title produced in partnership with Thompson Hotels, owner of such trendy properties as 60 Thompson and Miami's Sagamore. The magazine, which will be distributed free in all rooms, will focus on "pioneers of progressive culture and icons in the making" in the arts, fashion and nightlife. "Our guests are really tribal in nature," said Jason Pomeranc, a co-owner of Thompson Hotels. "They are, to a certain extent, demographically diverse but progressive in their tastes. They have a common language, and I think the magazine is really a way to communicate with them."
