******* For a small outfit, The New Republic has always gone long on drama. Its changes in leadership have usually arrived in the form of rolling coups or lightning bolts from above. So it is refreshing, if a bit underwhelming, to report that Franklin Foer, a senior editor with the magazine, is quietly taking over the shop next week from the current editor, Peter Beinart, who has a book to promote and ambitions of returning to longer form writing. "I think this is the first bloodless transition in many years," said Mr. Foer, who was in New York yesterday. While there is no blood spattering its walls, the magazine that Mr. Foer, 31, takes over is hardly on a roll. The New Republic's circulation has dropped by almost 40 percent in four years; it cut its circulation and staff salaries after aggressively spending on the Web in 2002. Meanwhile, its historical role as a maypole for middle-way Democrats is under challenge from countless Web sites and bloggers. And one of the magazine's major preoccupations ?? a search for the soul of the Democratic Party ?? would seem to require a lot of patience and a miner's helmet. MORE ONLINE 2. NY Post Yet Another Spin By Keith J. Kelly 2/28/06 http://www.nypost.com/business/64329.htm Spin magazine is expected to finalize its sale today to the San Francisco media blueblood Nion McEvoy's McEvoy Group and Hartle Media, a small San Francisco-based publisher. Miller Publishing CEO Robert Miller will receive a fraction of the $42 million that he paid for the title when he bought it from Bob Guccione Jr. in 1997. Miller is believed to be selling the rock 'n' roll monthly for as little as $5 million, but most of that is from the assumption of the magazine's subscription liabilities. The cash changing hands is believed to be in the mid-six figure range. MORE ONLINE 3. WWD VARIETY SHOW Sara James 2/28/06 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/104684 Variety's monthly lifestyle spin-off, V Life, is effectively dead after this month's Oscar issue. But that doesn't mean the Hollywood trade is giving up on fashion. Variety just hired Monica Corcoran away from In Style's L.A. bureau to replace Ginny Chien as style editor. Corcoran, who starts next week, will edit a new style page within the Variety Weekend section. One duty will be to oversee Variety's Stylephile blog, which launched as an independent site on Monday. "It's a work in progress," said Dana Harris, editor of Variety Weekend. "The site is a really good template for what we are going to be doing, but I'm sure it will evolve once Monica starts."
