*************** Whether you want to sell your first story or have been doing it for years and just need to make more cash, Ed thinks Eric can help. Eric has been an editor at Folio: and Travel Agent and has written for Men's Fitness, Oxygen and countless other titles. Details:
******* The Weider family that sold its fitness magazine empire to American Media for $360 million is back in the publishing business. It just spent an estimated $15 million to buy the 10-title history magazine group from Primedia. The group includes Military History, World War II, Civil War Times, Wild West, America's Civil War, British Heritage, Vietnam, MHQ, American History and Aviation History plus the historynet.com Web site. Eric Weider ??” nephew of Joe Weider who engineered the sale of the muscle mags to David Pecker's AMI ??” said he plans to keep the history titles in Leesburg, Va., where they will be known as the Weider History Group. Eric Weider will be the president and CEO while Bruce Forman will be the chief operating officer. MORE ONLINE Joanne Lipman, the editor-in-chief of the still-untitled Conde Nast business title that is still a year away from launch, is staffing up. She has just raided Fortune magazine to hire Dan Roth as a new senior writer. "That's the rumor, and it is true," said Roth yesterday. He starts the new gig March 20. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to a start-up magazine that is backed by Conde Nast," he said. MORE ONLINE

A few weeks ago, Newsweek put the ballyhooed skier Bode Miller on the cover of its Olympic Preview issue. The tag line was "Miller Time," a play on words about the high expectations by the media, among others, for the 28-year-old American as well as his stated proclivity to party hearty. But in Turin, Italy, Miller, astoundingly, became the biggest bust of the games. Not only did Miller fail to win even a single medal but he seemed to care more about preserving his renegade image than explaining his dismal performance. Newsweek, feeling properly chagrined, saluted this development in its Conventional Wisdom section, writing, tongue-in-cheek, "We put this jerk on the cover?" Rest assured, Newsweek wasn't alone in building up Miller. Time had called Miller a "rebel" on its cover -- which, before the Olympics fiasco, presumably described an athlete who proved to be better at giving provocative interviews than being a sports champion. GOODBYE STUFF, HELLO THINGS: Martha Stewart's company may be back in growth mode ??” it recently reported its first profitable quarter in two years ??” but that doesn't mean all of its properties are gaining ground. Kids: Fun Stuff to Do Together, the National Magazine Award-winning parenting title, has been discontinued and replaced by a new publication with a smaller trim size, scaled-back distribution and lower frequency, a spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday. The new magazine, called Good Things for Kids, recently made its debut on newsstands with an issue dated winter 2006. It has a digest-sized format, a decision influenced by the success of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia's most recent launch, Everyday Food, said the spokeswoman. One more issue is planned for this year, with no frequency determined yet for 2007. Unlike its quarterly predecessor, which had 212,000 subscribers and a controlled circulation of 53,000, Good Things for Kids will be a newsstand-only title. MORE ONLINE EMAP FRANCE ON THE BLOCK: Emap plc, the U.K. publishing giant, has put its French division on the block for an undisclosed price. Emap France publishes 44 titles including TV listings T?©l?© Star and T?©l?© Poche, as well as FHM, Top Sante, Closer and a slew of sports, science and hobby magazines. Emap said in a statement Tuesday the decision to sell came from a review of its "investment priorities," and that it had generated "significant value" at Emap France since 1994, when it purchased the division. MORE ONLINE SELFRIDGES GOES POP: How many ways can a magazine brand be spun? The latest permutation is a boutique from Pop magazine, Emap's twice-yearly fashion title. Called Pop's Shop, it will be open for a month, starting March 9, at Selfridges in London. "Pop already sells really well on Selfridges' newsstand, so the fashionista type is familiar with the brand," said Alannah Weston, creative director of Selfridges who collaborated with Pop's editor in chief, Katie Grand, on the boutique. "I've always been interested in guerrilla shops," Weston added. "I love the idea of Pop's Shop being there for just a month ??” if you miss it, you miss it." MORE ONLINE

The McEvoy Group of San Francisco, owner of Chronicle Books, said Tuesday that it acquired Spin, the rock music magazine founded more than 20 years ago by Bob Guccione Jr. McEvoy Group chairman and CEO Nion McEvoy becomes CEO of a new company created for the acquisition, Spin Media LLC. McEvoy said the purchase price was less than $5 million. Tom Hartle, co-manager of Hartle Media LLC, was named Spin's president. Hartle is the publisher of San Francisco's 7 x 7 magazine and California Home Design. Hartle Media has been a longtime sales representative for Spin. McEvoy also named Malcolm Campbell as Spin's publisher and Andy Pemberton as Spin's editor in chief. Campbell was Spin's publisher six years ago and previously was editor of the British magazine Q. In 2000, they were recruited by Dennis Publications to start Blender, another music magazine. "Spin has been an authoritative voice for contemporary rock music for over 20 years,'' McEvoy said. "I have every confidence that Tom, Malcolm and Andy will secure and expand Spin's role as the pre-eminent music magazine in America.'' MORE ONLINE

At this point, we are pretty sure that FX pays people to watch its shows. But this upcoming drama, based on the wonderful world of tabloids and celeb stalkers, we might just have to check out. Dirt is yet another attempt by Courteney Cox and David Arquette's production company "Coquette Productions" to make a decent TV show ??” we don't need to tell you that Daisy Does America was not such a smash. As of now, FX is preparing for the pilot of Dirt, a drama based on the celeb mag industry. "Dirt," a co-production with Cox and Arquette's Coquette Prods., explores the world of tabloid journalism and follows the female editor-in-chief of two gossipy magazines and a schizophrenic paparazzo. Jessica Alba is pissed, yo. After the starlet rejected Playboy's offer to appear on its cover, the mag went ahead with its own agenda anyway. Playboy fanagled their way into obtaining and using a promotional photo of a bikini-clad Alba from Columbia Pictures and using it on the March cover. The celeb, who did not pose nude for the magazine, is suing Hugh Hefner & Co.,claiming that they "are trying to make it seem that she appears in a "nude or semi-nude pictorial." Yep, when you're on the cover of Playboy (bikini or no bikini) people expect to find your bod in the buff inside. Alba is demanding that the magazine cease distribution of the March issue and pay her "a monetary sum," as retribution for damages to her name and image. MORE ONLINE

Back to Men??™s Journal for just a moment. So who did Michael Caruso, according to his wrongful-termination lawsuit, spend six trying to fire because his or her ???removal was integral to the success of Men??™s Journal???? Survey says??¦ Managing editor Leslie Lewis, by an 11-percent margin. This tracks with a number of emails we received, too, including several that turned Caruso??™s version of the tale on its head: Rather than Lewis??™s departure being integral to the mag??™s success, several tipsters say, she was the competent vet who kept things going at the mag, and Kent Brownridge wouldn??™t let Caruso fire her because he knew she was needed.
