Networking brings job leads, friendship
By Julie Milner
March 1, 2006

It is all about who you know. It's true. People will unlock so many doors for you if you let them, and they also can make your life so much more enjoyable than if they weren't in it. I'm sitting here right now trying to find the source of my uncontrollable happiness. The only thing I can credit it to is the people I have been surrounded by.

My college professor lectured one day that moving and starting a new life away from home probably is one of the most stressful times a person can go through. I remember sitting in class, popping my pen and thinking to myself, "I'm going to be doing that in a few months." My heart stopped. "I'm moving to New York." How stressful was that going to be?

The first week I was here, I e-mailed every person I knew and even people I didn't know. My last year's summer internship program, American Society of Magazine Editors (magazine.org for any of you who are interested in applying) gave me a success secret.

"Network, network, network," said the program's coordinator. So, I took what he said to heart and literally introduced myself over e-mails to about 50 magazine editors across the city. "Hi! My name is Julie Miller," I wrote, asking for any advice these people could give me. Twenty responded enthusiastically. Ten asked if I wanted to meet with them at their office or for coffee. Five proceeded to give me other people's contact information from the industry. It was working. I couldn't believe the generosity these people had for me.

One person I have come in contact with is Chandra Czape Turner, founder of my obsession, ed2010.com. The Web site is a networking haven for anyone who wants to work in magazines, especially in New York. But the networking isn't necessarily done all online. Because of this site (or should I call it a club?), I have met the most amazing people in the world.

Most of them are my age and are working in magazines. They will call me up randomly to let me know of a job lead or to invite me to poker and wine nights at their apartments. And the best part of it all? They're genuinely my new friends.

I came here with only a few New York numbers in my phone book and now I not only have a network of magazine editors who are keeping an eye on me and my job search, but I also have a new set of friends who are just keeping an eye on me.

Whoever said moving to a new city and starting a new life was stressful must not have had a network of superstars to lean on. It really is all about who you know.

2. New York Post
Bennet To Edit Atlantic
By Keith J. Kelly
March 2, 2006
http://www.nypost.com/business/62597.htm

New York Times reporter James Bennet has been tapped as the new editor of the Atlantic Monthly, nearly four years after the post was last filled by the late Michael Kelly. Kelly stepped down from the editor's job in September 2002 to return to writing but tragically became the first American journalist killed in the Iraq conflict in April 2003. Cullen Murphy, the managing editor, stepped into the breach to run the magazine, but owner David Bradley never gave him the official title. Last April, Bradley announced he was going to move the magazine from its longtime home in Boston to Washington, D.C.

Bennet was nearly wooed to The New Yorker two years ago to write the influential Letter from Washington column, while he was still the Jerusalem bureau chief of The Times. His selection capped an exhaustive but methodical search by Bradley, in which he had a staff draw up a list of 150 prominent journalists that were deemed to have the right qualities of intellect and serious long form journalism credentials. "I also wanted to get someone who was still in the vertical stage of their career," said Bradley, "not someone who was into their second or third act."

He talked with nearly 80 people including Bennet, but never suggested he was close to hiring an editor. He finally made the formal mid-six figure offer on Tuesday. Bennet resigned from The Times yesterday. Said Bennet yesterday, "I think it is an incredible opportunity to encourage the practice of serious, long form journalism at a great magazine."

Ed hears ...

... that Parenting is looking for an administrative intern ($8/hr) to help with our annual Toys of the Year contest. Duties include logging toys into a database, fielding phone calls, managing the toy closet, coordinating mailings, and filing catalogs. We're seeking someone who has impeccable organizational and phone skills, and can confidently (and willingly) wrangle over 1,000 toys and the accompanying paperwork. The upside: This intern is the point-person for a major project, gets experience with product stories, and assists two terrific editors in a great work environment. (Plus: Toys! Fun!) Internship is 3 days a week, beginning 3/20/05 through 6/2/05. You must be able to commit to three full days for the internship's duration. Interested? Send a resume and cover letter to Amy Roberts, amy_roberts@timeinc.com, with 'Toy intern' as the subject line. Oh, and do mention Ed.
