Pardon Ed's lateness today. The newsletter network was down--again! (This is starting to feel like his abusive relationship with AOL. Remember that?)

Atlantic Tops Nominee List for Awards
Katherine Q. Seelye
March 16, 2006
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/16/business/media/16mag.html

Despite unusual turmoil last year, and no permanent editor since Michael Kelly stepped down in 2002, The Atlantic Monthly received eight nominations for National Magazine Awards yesterday, outpacing even The New Yorker, which has dominated the field for eight years. Right behind The Atlantic was The Virginia Quarterly Review, with six nominations.

The awards, sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors in conjunction with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, are the top journalistic honors in the magazine industry. Winners will be announced May 9. The magazine association said that the biggest themes among the nominees were health care, the war in Iraq, the American response to terrorism and global warming.

The Atlantic's nominations include one for general excellence among magazines with a circulation of 250,000 to 500,000. Its competitors are Backpacker, New York Magazine, Texas Monthly and Technology Review. Nominated for general excellence for magazines with circulation over two million were Glamour, National Geographic, Prevention, Time and O, The Oprah Magazine. Glamour won last year, the first time a women's magazine had taken the top prize since Mirabella in 1992. General excellence nominees for magazines with a circulation of one to two million were ESPN The Magazine, Fortune, Martha Stewart Living, The New Yorker and Vogue.

Memo Pad: New Yorker's Off Year
Jeff Bercovici
March 16, 2006
http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/105026

Receiving five National Magazine Award nominations in a single year is not exactly a disappointment ??” unless you happen to be The New Yorker. Under editor in chief David Remnick, the Cond?© Nast weekly has dominated the competition, racking up 10 nominations last year and 11 in 2004.

So what happened this time? It's possible the strong showing by New York magazine under editor in chief Adam Moss stole some of the thunder normally reserved for The New Yorker. New York staffers were equally pleased on two fronts: They matched The New Yorker's total of five nominations and they beat their own record of three in one year. "We're a magazine that tries to do a lot of different things and what I think this shows is, we do them reasonably well," Moss said. As always, though, what really matters is which title gets bragging rights come awards day.

But it appears a mix-up also may have cost The New Yorker a nomination or two. According to a source involved in vetting the entries, the magazine submitted the wrong issues in at least two categories, leading judges in those categories to exclude the title from consideration. A representative from The New Yorker said there had been no official notice of disqualification from the American Society of Magazine Editors, and Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker, who is president of ASME, declined to comment. It's worth noting, however, that not since 1996 has The New Yorker failed to be nominated in the fiction category.

Moving to reduce its reliance on advertising-related revenue, Hearst Corp. is buying a minority stake in Fitch Group Inc. for $592 million in a deal that represents the media giant's first step into providing financial services information.

New York-based Hearst will take a 20% stake in Fitch, a London- and New York-based provider of debt and equity information owned by Paris-based Fimalac SA. The target includes Fitch Ratings Ltd., which offers issuer and bond ratings and research, and Algorithmics Inc., a Toronto financial and risk management consultancy that Fitch acquired in January for $175 million.

The deal assigns Fitch an enterprise value of $4.4 billion. The transaction is expected to close by the end of April. Among its other holdings, Hearst owns: 12 U.S. newspapers, including The Houston Chronicle and the San Francisco Chronicle; more than 175 magazines, including Cosmopolitan and O, The Oprah Magazine; and 28 television stations. It also holds a stake in several cable networks, including ESPN and The History Channel.
