******* He??™s got an affordable housewares line, like Martha Stewart. He??™s got a talk show, like Oprah Winfrey. So why shouldn??™t Isaac Mizrahi have his own magazine, too? Apparently he??™s been asking himself that same question. Mizrahi has started work on the prototype for a lifestyle magazine that will bear his brand and, he hopes, provide content for a new Web site, also in development. ???Maybe the magazine will go somewhere, but at the moment it??™s a prototype, a content vehicle,??? he said, adding that he would like to have a completed issue by July. For the moment, he is pursuing the project on his own, without the involvement of a publishing company.
Somewhat unusually, Mizrahi is treating the magazine primarily as a tool to test the viability of his online concept. ???The reason I am doing it is because it??™s a crying shame that of all people, I don??™t have a Web site yet, in all these years,??? he said. ???What I need, more than anything, is content. I think it??™s better to first have a hard copy. If I can actually look at a magazine and turn the pages, then it can be a Web site.??? MORE ONLINE

Earlier this year, the cool kids were all laughing at One Bryant Park, the little stump that could. No longer. A tipster with a bird's eye view reports on the future home of Bank of America and waterless urinals: "[W]ithin weeks the entire eastern view of Conde Nast [whose headquarters are at 4 Times Square] will be obliterated...That would suck for them because their view is nice ??” the park, the Chrysler Building in the distance, etc. These guys are building out an entire floor every few days!" Mm, that would suck. MORE ONLINE

God bless you, every one of you. ???If anyone is familiar with this alleged Virginia Review and wants to provide a few grafs of description, we??™d be much indebted,??? we begged of you earlier. ???And we imagine not a few of our readers would be, too.??? And then, like the angels you are, you all jumped to attention and gave us our answer. Now we??™ll be able to enjoy the full Ellies experience. (One hopes the Times will launch a David Carr blog to cover the runup.) Herewith, an explanation of what the fuck The Virginia Quarterly Review is, fresh from the Gawker emailbag: Dear Gawker, I??™ve read the VIRGINIA QUARTERLY REVIEW??”every issue, cover to cover. Of course, I??™m the editor. . .Thanks for the mention ??” and for your questions. A few answers: * What the fuck is The Virginia Quarterly Review? It??™s a question everyone is asking. Already WOMEN??™S WEAR DAILY has dubbed VQR ???this year??™s dark horse,??? the NEW YORK POST called our six nominations as ???the biggest surprise of the day,??? and the NEW YORK TIMES marveled that the little magazine was ???right behind THE ATLANTIC.??? So how did a magazine, published at the University of Virginia, with a tiny budget and circulation, garner as many nominations as the perennial heavyweights? I think the only answer is ???hustle.??? We want to compete with the best magazines. To do that as a little quarterly, we have to read voraciously, pursue the best writers ??” both established and unknown ??” and be pitching stories ideas constantly. * How did it end up with six finalists? The hustle is paying off. In the last year we??™ve published Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Cormac McCarthy, Isabel Allende, Tony Kushner, and a regular series by Art Spiegelman. Our Spring issue, due to land next week, includes a feature on evolution and Intelligent Design with contributions from David Quammen, Niles Eldredge, Robert M. Sapolsky, and others. But we??™re proudest of the fact that our two nominations in Essays were by writers, Pauline W. Chen and Martin Preib, who had never been previously published in a national magazine. One of the missions of little magazines like ours has always been to discover and nurture new talent. We??™re doing exactly that. And we??™ve got good taste. MORE ONLINE

As expected, the Audit Bureau of Circulations approved a new rapid circulation reporting service and agent compliance program at its board meeting held March 8-10 in Sarasota, Fla. The new online reporting service, ABC Rapid Report, will provide subscription, single-copy sales, total paid, verified and analyzed non-paid circulation figures as soon as four weeks after a magazine's on-sale date. Publishers will also be able to update the numbers as more sales figures become available. ABC member titles can begin using the optional, free service for its July-dated issues; data will be available free to ABC members with online access. Meanwhile, more than 35 individual titles are currently beta-testing the service. "Magazine publishers enthusiastically support this new ABC initiative,??? said David Leckey, executive vp, consumer marketing at American Media Inc. ???While print remains the most engaging of media, we recognize that advertisers have other choices. ABC??™s Rapid Report service will allow us to be more responsive to market demands, provide greater accountability to our advertisers, and demonstrate the superb value of print media.??? MORE ONLINE

LOS ANGELES - A judge said Thursday she needs more information before ruling on a motion by US Weekly magazine to dismiss a $20 million libel lawsuit filed against it by Britney Spears.
