Memo Pad: Black Marks ... Personnel Business

It could be another year before the general public gets to see it, but mocked-up pages for the new Cond?© Nast business magazine are likely now circulating at 4 Times Square. Veteran art director Robert Priest was recently brought in to work on the prototype and will stay through the 2007 launch, a spokeswoman for the magazine confirmed. Priest resigned from his post as design director of O at Home several weeks ago and has been installed at Cond?© Nast headquarters on a part-time basis ever since. (The rest of the week, he runs his own design firm, Priest Media.)

Reached by phone Wednesday, Priest would only say, "It's a good, serious subject. So I think it's going to be a great magazine." Asked about the look of the traditional leaders in the already well-served category, like Fortune, Forbes and Business Week, Priest chuckled and said, "I'm not going to go there. Some of my best friends do those magazines." Editor in chief Joanne Lipman also quietly poached two photo editors from within the company a couple months back. Lisa Berman, longtime deputy to Vanity Fair's photography director Susan White, and Vanity Fair senior associate photo editor Sarah Czeladnicki are now working in the photo department at the business magazine. That makes an editorial team of seven so far, including deputy editor Jim Impoco, managing editor Blaise Zerega and senior writer Dan Roth.

A spokeswoman for Vanity Fair said that Berman's duties had been divvied up among existing staff; Sasha Erwitt and Jessica Dimson were promoted to senior associate photo editor and assistant photo editor, respectively, and Mark Jacobson came over from Entertainment Weekly as associate photo editor.

The Times Promotes Editor of Magazine
The New York Times

The New York Times has promoted Gerald Marzorati, editor of The New York Times Magazine, to the position of assistant managing editor. The appointment was announced by Bill Keller, executive editor. Mr. Marzorati, 52, will continue to oversee the content of the magazine and related publications. In addition, he will help identify and develop the next generation of editors for the magazines and magazine-like sections of the newspaper.

He will also help bridge the in-depth original reporting projects of the magazine and the daily newspaper and will work with The Times's online staff in developing a Times Magazine presence on the Web. Mr. Marzorati was named editor of the magazine in 2003. He had been the magazine's editorial director since 1998. He started at The Times in 1994 as articles editor of the magazine. Before joining The Times, he was an editor of nonfiction at The New Yorker; deputy editor at Harper's Magazine; and senior editor at The SoHo News.

Women's Mags Tune In to QVC
By Stephanie D. Smith

When viewers tune into TV shopping network QVC, they??™re usually looking for a stellar deal on a flatscreen television or a Veg-o-Matic food processor. But recently, West Chester, Pa.-based QVC, the country??™s largest TV retailer that in 2004 boasted $5.7 billion in sales, has become a new channel by which publishers are trying to sell magazine subscriptions.

First to test the waters was Cond?© Nast??™s Lucky, which began its QVC partnership two years ago. More recently, sister title Allure and Time Inc.??™s People have worked with QVC. The QVC foray is the latest effort by publishers to come up with creative ways to lure new readers as the newsstand becomes increasingly crowded and the cost of direct-mail campaigns steadily climbs.

???Direct mail is becoming a far less effective tool; people are so inundated with things in their mailbox,??? said Coleen Kuehn, executive vp, chief strategist for MPG. ???Direct mail is a push strategy, whereas QVC is more of a pull strategy, drawing in people who are looking to buy something. It??™s a more welcomed offer than it would be in the mailbox.???

Magazines Grapple With School Library Liquor Ad Ban
By Ira Teinowitz and Nat Ives
March 21, 2005
http://www.adage.com/news.cms?newsId=48367

The liquor industry is toughening some of its ad standards for magazines, recommending that spirits makers should cease running ads on the back and inside covers as of July 1 in millions of copies of five major titles, including Time and Newsweek, unless the publishers can figure out a way to send thousands of school-library editions without those ads.

Citing the difficulties of producing special editions minus the liquor ads when those ads appear in cover positions, the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. told its members to ???refrain??? from taking the more expensive ads in Time, Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report and People.

The changes by the trade group are part of its semiannual report on enforcement of the industry??™s Code of Responsible Practices for the last half of 2005. That??™s a blow to publishers, who can charge a premium for cover positions. George Janson, managing partner and director of print, Mediaedge:cia, said the new requirements will pose huge challenges to most of the weekly magazines, which wouldn't be happy to give up liquor advertising. ???It??™s almost like liquor is becoming the new tobacco,??? he said.
