Cargo Magazine Folds
By Jeff Bercovici
http://www.wwd.com/breakingnews/105297

After two years of trying and failing to establish itself in the market, Cargo, the men's shopping magazine, is shutting down. Conde Nast editorial director Thomas Wallace broke the news to the staff in a meeting Monday afternoon, said sources at the title. (Conde Nast also owns WWD.)

Cargo was started at a moment when the success of Lucky made several publishers feel there might be promise in the idea of a similar men's publication. But two of those magazines, Ziff Davis' Sync and Fairchild Publications' Vitals, have already folded, and Cargo struggled to attract both readers and advertisers. In the second half of 2005, it sold an average of 73,909 copies per issue on the newsstand.

Rogue Subagent Problems Reported
By Kristina Joukhadar

Two consumer magazine circulation directors have reported to Circulation Management specific problems they are having with sub agents who appear to have obtained the subscription lists for the magazines and have gone after subscribers to renew them without approval from the publishers.

In the case of the first magazine, the circ director said she would like to send a warning out to other publishers and list managers to be wary of those who are renting the subscriber lists.

???Sometimes a legitimate company may rent the names from a legitimate list broker, but somehow another company gets hold of the list. So it appears another company may be clearing the list rentals without authorization. It??™s very difficult to pin down exactly what is happening.???.

Of Flab and Flimflammery: Veteran Prankster Behind Esquire's 'Fat Tax' Spoof
By Peter Carlson
March 25, 2006
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/24/AR2006032402170.html

A fat, rich Texan named Irwin Leba has devised an ingenious idea that could solve both the federal deficit and the obesity epidemic: "Balance the budget by taxing the obese." And Leba is spending his millions -- earned in the fast-food business -- to lobby for his "fat tax."

Leba's plan was unveiled in Joshua Foer's article "The More You Weigh, the More You Pay" in the April issue of Esquire. The eccentric millionaire would require all Americans to step on the scales at a federal weigh station so they can be taxed based on their body mass index.

Under his plan, Leba himself would have to pay an extra $70,000 to Uncle Sam -- a stiff penalty for his love of deep-fried Twinkies.

AT HOME WITH HAMISH: Vogue Living is a go for November, with Vogue??™s European editor at large, Hamish Bowles, at the helm. A spokesman for the magazine confirmed a 13th issue will be published this year, devoted to home, culture and style, and will ship to most Vogue subscribers and to newsstands.

The special issue was given approval in the past two weeks, after a months-long internal debate at Cond?© Nast about whether the company should take on any more new projects this year. In August, speaking about the development of the Cond?© Nast business magazine, chief executive officer Charles Townsend said definitively: ???This takes us through 2007??¦.Between [the launches of] Cookie and Men??™s Vogue and this business publication, I would say our plate is rather full.???

Since then, Vogue editor in chief and the ever-extending brand??™s editorial director, Anna Wintour, and Vogue group publisher Tom Florio seem to have beguiled executives and gotten the go-ahead ??” with the strong, albeit very early, numbers on Men??™s Vogue solidifying their case. Cond?© Nast isn??™t calling this an official launch, but the pattern is the same as Men??™s Vogue, and Wintour??™s editorial letter in Vogue this month teases that she hopes to launch Vogue Living ???in coming years.???

PEZ DISPENSED: GQ??™s managing editor, Mary Gail Pezzimenti, seemingly was plucked from obscurity last week and handed a high-level corporate editorial job at Cond?© Nast. Pezzimenti was named editorial projects director, a new position for the company, which is the parent of WWD. She will report to managing editor of editorial operations Rick Levine and also will work with Cond?© Nast??™s editorial director, Tom Wallace. The additional position in the department reflects the recent growth of the company and, in particular, Wallace??™s portfolio. He now handles almost all of the Cond?© Nast monthlies and gained oversight of former Fairchild titles Jane, Cookie and Details in the most recent reshuffle.

WRANGLERS HEAD WEST: Apparently, it??™s a good time to be in the business of mixing celebrity and fashion. Starworks, a five-year-old agency that helps photographers with unconventional casting needs, is opening its third new office in six months. Harper??™s Bazaar??™s Allison Oleskey will relocate from New York, where she??™s overseen the editorial division for the past four years, to Los Angeles to open a bureau there on April 1. Jauretsi Saizarbitoria, former entertainment editor of Jane, will take over Oleskey??™s duties in New York.

Ambition ??“ and Bossiness ??“ Came Early to Bonnie Fuller
By Pranay Gupte

Bonnie Fuller wears the monikers of titlemeister and controlmeister with perfect aplomb.

That isn't to say that Ms. Fuller, the Canadian-born chief editorial director of American Media Incorporated, doesn't generate turbulence while she wields control of the company's 23 titles - or while she promotes her persona as a powerful editrix who also finds time to raise four children, tend to a self-employed architect-husband in Hastings-on-Hudson, and write a much buzzed-about book, "The Joys of Much Too Much" (Fireside Books), which reaches bookstores today.

"You've got to keep your focus," Ms. Fuller said, when asked about her reputation as a hard-driving celebrity-executive whose demanding style has been famously known to run lesser mortals - including rivals - into the ground.

Celebrity Death Watch
By Kurt Andersen

On a scale of one to ten, one being the least possible interest in famous entertainers qua famous entertainers, and ten being the most, I??™m about a six. Until I recently gorged for days on end, it had been years since I had touched a copy of People or Us Weekly. I skipped the Tonys and Grammys and Emmys. But I do skim three or four New York newspaper gossip columns most weekdays, and I watched E!??™s Golden Globes red-carpet preshow, and, of course, I tuned in to the Academy Awards telecast. For years, I??™ve thought that the intense fascination with famous people must be about to end??”and I??™ve been repeatedly, egregiously mistaken. But now??”truly, finally??”I believe that we are at the apogee, the zenith, the plateau, the top of the market. After 30 years, this cycle of American celebrity mania has peaked. I think. I hope.

Of course, at the newsstand and on TV, the unprecedented frenzy seems to be proceeding apace. The dozen women appearing on the big women??™s magazines in any recent month (Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, Madonna, Keira Knightley, Ashlee Simpson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Beckinsale, Natalie Portman, etcetera) will be pretty much the same ones next month, unless Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie deigns to make herself available.

Magazine editors gripe about the rings they have to jump through to book the hottest possible celebrities (???The PR people,??? one complained to me, ???are really such fucking fuckbrains???), but they still do whatever??™s necessary. And the jonesing for any speck of celebrity pixie dust can have a crack-whore quality. An editor of one upscale magazine was genuinely thrilled last year that she had persuaded Julie Delpy to pose for her cover. ???Who is Julie Delpy???? I asked. The editor and I each considered the other deeply, tragically out of it.
