******* Five years after its launch, Elle Girl is shutting down, the first magazine casualty in the once white-hot teen market that has now cooled down considerably. Hachette Filipacchi Media CEO Jack Kliger told staffers yesterday that following the June/July issue the magazine's print version will be discontinued. He said the magazine would be continued in digital form on the ellegirl.com Web site and via wireless content. Christina Kelly, who took over as editor-in-chief last August when founding editor Brandon Holley bolted to become editor of Jane, is not staying with the company. MORE ONLINE 2.New York PostFelix Dennis Throws in Towel Here, Mags May Sell for $250M By Keith J. Kelly 4/05/06 http://www.nypost.com/business/66492.htm FELIX Dennis, the maverick British publisher behind bawdy lad-mag Maxim, is putting his Dennis Publishing U.S. unit on the block. Allen & Co. won the mandate to sell the firm, which could carry a $250 million price tag. Investment firm Veronis Suhler is also said to be poking around, but at this point it could be more as a potential buyer for its fund. Dennis is among the wealthiest people in Britain. He owns a home once owned by David Bowie on the island of Mustique and a 16th Century estate in the English countryside. While his empire has been built in part on products printed on dead trees, he has often waxed philosophical on a desire to become a philanthropist and restore a major forest to his native England. By Staff 4/05/06 http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=319605&itype=8486 In the eyes of Glamour magazine, Jen Weinberg is a definite “do”. The 27-year old public relations and special projects manager at Henri Bendel is leaving her professional home for the last 5 _ years to join the Cond? Nast title as senior public relations manager. Her last day at Bendel's is this Friday; she starts at Glamour on April 17. Weinberg will join the current PR team of Meg D'Incecco and Samantha Rosenthal. She succeeds Beth Andrews, who jumped over to GQ as associate director of PR back in February. JIM SHI MORE ONLINE 4. New York ObserverIt's Conde Nast: Newhouse Keeps Editorss Housed By Michael Calderone 4/0506 http://www.observer.com/20060410/20060410_Michael_Calderone_finance_manhattantransfers.asp When Tina Brown turned down a five-year deal to stay on as editor of The New Yorker in 1998, she was reportedly living in a $4 million East 57th Street maisonette with four bedrooms, a library, six baths, three maids' rooms and a large garden-all bought with help from her employer, Cond? Nast, which put up their mortgage on the place. If you want to employ the “Queen of Buzz,” you have to give her a good salary-something Cond? Nast chairman Si Newhouse is famous for. And you have to give her something Cond? Nast is less famous for: a castle. Because a million-dollar salary may seem like a lot. But when you've got Tony Blair, Paul Wolfowitz, Judith Regan, Salman Rushdie and Tom Brokaw to entertain, it's just mad money. And at Cond? Nast, entertaining on that scale is part of the job. Media LifeWords and thoughts from the Atlantic By Barton Biggs 4/04/06 http://www.medialifemagazine.com/artman/publish/article_3882.asp Each year when the National Magazine Award nominations are announced, the Atlantic Monthly is inevitably nominated for a handful. Last year it was up for five. This year it's been nominated for eight, more than any other title. The nominations, announced last month, include one for general excellence among magazines with circulations of 250,000 to 500,000. Today, as part of ongoing series on this year's Ellie nominees, Media Life excerpts passages from Atlantic pieces that earned nominations. In the Reporting category, the Atlantic received two nominations. The following excerpt is from William Langewiesche's "The Wrath of Khan" examining the history of Pakistan's nuclear weapons program. It ran in the November 2005 issue. "On the night of May 27, 1998, just hours before the scheduled test, word was received from Saudi intelligence that Israeli fighters, flying on behalf of India (of course), were inbound to take out Pakistan's nuclear facilities-specifically the laboratory at Kahuta and the test site in Chagai. Pakistan scrambled its own fighters and rolled its missiles out of their shelters in preparation to launch.
