No Time Out From Layoffs
By Keith J. Kelly

CARL Icahn may not be hovering over Time Warner but the ax man - or woman - cometh once again to the Time Inc. magazine wing. Today Time Inc. is expected to begin telling staffers of yet another round of cutbacks, reaching up to 120 back office and production people, sources said.

It will mark the third major round of cutbacks unleashed by CEO Ann Moore over the past four months. The company cut about 200 staffers in two rounds of buyouts and cutbacks in December and January.

Early rumors said Time was aiming to cut 400 staffers from its 13,000-person payroll. The latest round of layoffs leaves the company only 80 cuts short of that goal.

Now that the upheavals are over at American Media Inc., all eyes will once again be on Editorial Director Bonnie Fuller, as her original, multi-million dollar contract winds down. SEC documents show the editrix's deal ran from July 7, 2003 and expires on June 30.

Fuller has dumped her original attorney, Hollywood entertainment lawyer Ken Hurtz, and hired Grubman, Indursky & Schindler, where Larry Shire - who once repped JFK Jr. - is handling the negotiations with CEO David Pecker once again. Last year, Fuller's base salary jumped to $1.5 million, but her bonus, tied to newsstand circulation at the slumping Star, was only $74,851, according to SEC documents. The year before, she earned a base salary of $1,096,154, and pulled in a $500,000 bonus.

Memo Pad: Devil May Care
By Jeff Bercovici
4/7/06
http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/105556

With less than three months to go before "The Devil Wears Prada" opens in theaters, there has been some talk that Fox 2000 Pictures is not screening the film for editors of any Cond? Nast magazines. The novel on which the movie is based was widely said to be a thinly veiled satire of Vogue, the titular devil being editor in chief Anna Wintour; thus, her colleagues might, out of corporate loyalty, feel obliged to slam the film. Or something like that.

Alas, this conspiracy scenario appears to be a work of fiction itself. While no one from Vogue has been invited to preview "The Devil Wears Prada," according to a spokesman, others at the company, including Glamour editor in chief Cindi Leive, have. Vogue's spokesman said the magazine would send its entertainment editor if asked; a Fox spokeswoman did not return a message, leaving it unclear whether the failure to invite Vogue was an oversight or a deliberate omission.

Some editors got a different sort of preview. Margaret Russell, editor in chief of Elle Decor, selected an Upper East Side town house for inclusion in the May issue, only to learn that the dwelling - owned by Caryn and Craig Effron and designed by William Diamond and Anthony Baratta - served as the set for the home of Miranda Priestly (the fictionalized Wintour, played by Meryl Streep). Russell elected not to mention the movie in the story. "That's not what Elle Decor's about, and I think it's sort of tabloid-y," she said.

Press Release Parade: Maxim spreads eagle in Vegas'
By Jossip Editors

We knew Google was taking cash to put ads on its maps when Sopranos-branded locations started popping up in Google Local all around Jersey. But from the sound of Maxim's self-congratulatory press release (and aren't they all?), they did one better: Ed Needham & Co. constructed a copy of its Eva Longoria cover so large, Google's imaging satellites had no choice but to pick it up. Publicity buzz TK, they thought.

MAXIM Magazine, the #1 best-selling men's lifestyle magazine in the country and the world is celebrating their momentous milestone of reaching 100 issues by constructing a colossal special issue cover in the Las Vegas desert. MAXIM has teamed up with the City of Las Vegas so that everyone can see Eva Longoria's (last year's MAXIM Hot 100 winner) sexy new special cover in Google Earth by visiting Maximonline.com. The structure stretches 75 x 110 feet and is erected on floor of the Las Vegas desert.

“Leave it to MAXIM to do something so creative and so wild to celebrate their 100th issue. I guess space is no longer the final frontier! I am flattered, to say the least, to be TV's Sexiest Earthling,' Longoria said.

China said to impose magazine moratorium
By Joe McDonald, Associated Press Writer

China has imposed a moratorium on licensing new foreign magazines for publication, an official said Friday, in a possible blow to companies that hope to break into the booming Chinese media market.

The most high-profile possible victim of the new policy is the Chinese edition of Rolling Stone, published by Wenner Media LLC. The publishing venture in Shanghai for the U.S. music and pop culture magazine was ordered to dissolve last month after it put out a single issue.

China's move is part of an effort to help Chinese publishers expand their foreign sales, said the official, a director of the General Administration of Press and Publications.
