Skin Mags? Not at This Department.

Foreign Affairs, the Economist, and certainly U.S.News & World Report are titles you'd expect to see at the two State Department newsstands visited by the public, employees, and their kids, but Playboy and Penthouse? Yikes! Or so thought Condoleezza Rice a while back when she began receiving briefings in Foggy Bottom before her confirmation hearings as secretary of state. Alerted by an aide that the skin magazines, partially clad in brown paper covers, were placed beside newsmagazines and close to candy, nuts, and stuffed animals, she said, "I want them out."

A few weeks later, when she took over from Colin Powell, the eviction began. "The secretary wanted them gone immediately," says senior adviser Jim Wilkinson." She didn't understand how a department that claimed to fight for the rights of women worldwide could sell pornography that degrades women." And, he adds, the magazines "could be seen as contributing to a hostile work environment." He teamed with State's internal manager and several State women who had been campaigning against the publications but had gotten nowhere. Now that they have succeeded, some of those women are eyeing other lad mags like Maxim and FHM. But State News's Richard Williams isn't listening. It was no problem banning the XXX fare: It didn't move very fast. "But Maxim," he says, "is a bestseller."

JOCK SHOCK: What sort of guys want to look at photographs of a singed Iraqi car bomb victim right next to "sexxxy" video footage of three Japanese women simulating sex acts? Whoever they are, Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. wants to profit from them.

The company recently put up on the Web an early incarnation of Shocku.com. As WWD reported in December, Hachette, under former Stuff editor in chief Mike Hammer, has been developing a U.S. counterpart to its French title Choc. The final version of the Shock site will launch at the end of April, with a print magazine following on May 31.

HICKLIN IN AT OUT: Out has found a new editor in chief — and it only took six months. Aaron Hicklin is leaving BlackBook, where he's been editor in chief since 2003, to take the reins at the gay general-interest magazine. He replaces Brendan Lemon, who ended a five-year run in October. "The time when simply being a gay magazine was enough is over," Hicklin said Friday. "It's much more necessary now to think about how that territory is covered, and I think that's exciting. That's a real challenge."

At 80, Playboy founder Hefner reflects

Playboy creator Hugh M. Hefner is in the middle of an interview about his 80th birthday when a TV cameraman asks him to move a statue of former girlfriend Barbi Benton from the shelf behind him.

The statue's nude breasts were in the shot and that might not pass muster with TV decency standards.

"As much as things change, they stay the same," Hefner remarks, disappointment in his voice. "There is still controversy about, maybe even more than before, not just nudity — a nude statue."

Art & Antiques has been sold to Curtco Media, which aims to bring a new sense of urgency to a once sleepy cultural backwater of publishing that is suddenly percolating to life.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Curtco is estimated to have paid Atlanta-based Transworld Publishing around $7 million for the 105,000 circulation magazine.

The deal comes as the art field gets ready for new competition.

Not Since Jesus
Jason Zengerie
April 17, 2006 issue
http://newyorkmetro.com/news/features/16652/index.html

Sometime in the coming weeks, perhaps as soon as the first week of May, somewhere in the world—probably Paris, but possibly Los Angeles, or maybe even Addis Ababa—Angelina Jolie will bequeath unto the celebrity weeklies a gift so magnificent that, until recently, few imagined such a thing was possible. She will give birth to Brad Pitt’s child.

Not since Jesus has a baby been so eagerly anticipated. Actually, forget Jesus. Only three wise men turned up to greet him in the manger. The Brangelina baby—as the megawatt couple’s spawn is known, at least until its parents give it a proper name—has People, Us Weekly, In Touch, Star, and Life&Style (working, of course, on behalf of the millions and millions of readers they serve) awaiting the newborn’s arrival, all of them hoping and scheming and planning to voyage to the ends of the Earth, if that’s what it takes, to get a first—preferably the first—glimpse of the blessed child.

Why are people, and People, so desperate to see the Brangelina baby? The men and women who helm the celebrity weeklies have an easy answer. Their readers, they explain, view celebrities as their friends; and as they would be with any friends, they’re interested in their so-called life events. The big three of life events, the theory goes, are weddings, breakups, and babies—hence the celebrity weeklies’ laserlike focus on celebrity weddings, celebrity divorces, and celebrity babies.

Mag ‘Maxim’-izes Past
April 10, 2006
http://www.nypost.com/business/62206.htm

Poet and mogul Felix Dennis may be selling his U.S. magazines, including Maxim and Stuff, but that doesn't mean the lad category isn't still a competitive group.

Instead of the usual buxom blonde honey, this month's Maxim splashes a big number on the cover to celebrate its 100th issue. Perhaps the lad mag is trying to pique the interest of number crunchers and/or prospective buyers. The "Mind Altering Special Collector's Edition" may just be trying to fool potential buyers into paying up for the frat-boy staple even though its sales are slipping. (Single copy sales are off 15 percent, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations). While Dennis is off planting trees to reforest the U.K., Maxim gives its staff a break and rehashes stuff from its first 99 issues. Particularly useful is the salacious list of tips from chicks from past issues. Want to get better in the sack? Watch lesbian porno and read lesbian erotica. Wish we had thought of that. As always, the rest of the mag is filled with a gaggle of clever factoids about drinking, sex and gadgets.

The Forest of Dennis will also come from the sale of third-ranked lad mag, Stuff. A soggy Bijou Phillips graces this month's cover, and the spread inside is even sexier. The onetime teenage New York gossip queen has turned into a beautiful B-list actress and, if you believe Stuff, the 25-year-old party girl is now tearing up California. We were also tickled at the Stuff's top 10 Hilton-free heiresses. Here's a peek at the names: Ivanka Trump, Holly Branson and Georgina Bloomberg. Bonus: A separate, but skinnier, mag with the top 101 sexiest women online. The rest of the issue is filled with the usual mess of lists and top-10 whatnots.

Aaron Hicklin is Out's new daddy

Because it takes the gays so much longer to get anything accomplished – but not, it seems, as long as it takes the intellectuals – only now is LPI Media (now gayly owned by PlanetOut Partners, which runs Gay.com in all its sweaty, man-sex glory) getting around to finding a new editor-in-chief for Out since Brendan Lemon's smooth departure last fall.

So who's it gonna be? It's Aaron Hicklin, who comes on over from editing BlackBook, which we're quite confident printed all the fashion and culture items to qualify anybody to head up a fag rag. Not to mention, he's got great bone structure.
