Perks, Graft, Junkets? It's Not Congress, It's Beauty

The Fragrance Foundation Awards — the FiFi Awards for short — are to beauty products what the Oscars are to Hollywood: the night when everyone who is anyone in the industry gets dolled up and poses on a red carpet before a bank of flashing cameras. Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and the designer Michael Kors come out to promote their fragrances. But the real stars of the FiFis, the people who get thanked for moving so muchproduct by award winners at the podium, are the beauty editors of glossy magazines.

Last week at the FiFis dinner, held in Midtown in the cavernous Hammerstein Ballroom, beauty editors in borrowed evening wear sat with the perfume executives who had chauffered them to the event and dressed them for the evening. And then there was Jean Godfrey-June, the beauty director of Lucky magazine, who ordered her own car and was wearing her own outfit: a black cocktail dress.

"I'm at the Victoria's Secret table," said Ms. Godfrey-June. "What were they going to lend me, underwear?"

Memo Pad: Artful Borrowing...Bold-Ly Gone...First For Fashion...

ARTFUL BORROWING

Vanity Fair decided against printing its "green" May issue, which is dedicated to environmental matters, on recycled paper — but that doesn't mean there's nothing recycled in it. A spokeswoman for the magazine acknowledged Wednesday that the cover photo of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Al Gore, shot by Annie Leibovitz, was "inspired" by "Ballet Society," a 1948 portrait by Irving Penn of George Balanchine and three collaborators. Although there's no mention anywhere in the magazine of the connection, the composition of the two photos is virtually identical, down to the leafy garland on Roberts' head. Coincidentally, the issue's letters page contains a reader's observation that the March cover's layout, with a nude Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley beside a clothed Tom Ford, was similar to Edouard Manet's 1863 painting, "Le D?jeuner sur l'Herbe." Leibovitz also shot that cover.

Of course, there's nothing unusual in a photographer offering a visual tip of the hat to a fellow artist. But Leibovitz, whose spokeswoman did not reply to a request for comment, has not always been open to having her own work referenced: In 1994, she filed suit against Paramount Pictures, claiming an ad for "Naked Gun: 33 1/3" was an unlawful reproduction of her 1991 Vanity Fair cover featuring a pregnant Demi Moore. The "Naked Gun" ad showed actor Leslie Nielsen's head superimposed on the body of a pregnant woman. The courts ruled in favor of Paramount, which had argued that, as an obvious parody, the ad represented fair use. Leibovitz had better hope Penn proves more receptive to homage than she was.

SURROGATE EDITOR

Peripatetic editor Catherine Romano has alighted at Us Weekly, and just in time, too. With editor in chief Janice Min due to give birth to her second child in May, and executive editor Michael Steele off tending to a son born last week, the magazine was in need of some extra editorial talent at the top of the masthead. Romano has held senior-level jobs at Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, YM, Details and Maxim. She has worked several times alongside Bonnie Fuller, most recently on the launch of Celebrity Living (which shut down last week). She's scheduled to stay at Us through July as acting executive editor. "The pace is really new to me, but I like it," she said.

The joke du jour among Us staffers is that Min could give birth the same day as Angelina Jolie, whose pregnancy, via Brad Pitt, is the obsession of the moment for Us and its rivals. And if she doesn't, chances are some other Us staffer might, with a half dozen expecting, according to Min. "Everyone at the magazine seems to be pregnant now, so Catherine has been a really invaluable pinch hitter," she said.
