A Real Hachette Job
By Keith J. Kelly

HACHETTE Filipacchi CEO Jack Kliger quietly embarked on a course to shave 5 percent off of the corporate payroll costs this year, but apparently many staffers have only begun to find out recently as they come up for review. Apparently, the policy was communicated to department heads but no central announcement was made to staffers.

The aim was to shave about $4 million in costs off of the company's 1,000-plus person roster. Kliger had left for the holiday weekend and could not be reached. A company spokesperson said that the company would not comment on personnel pay questions.

Time magazine's political pundit Joe Klein was feted at a party Tuesday night at Time Managing Editor Jim Kelly's home. The bash was to celebrate publication of Klein's latest book, "Politics Lost: How American Democracy was Trivialized by People Who Think You're Stupid."

Talk inevitably turned to "Primary Colors," the book that made him a mega literary star and, conversely cost him his then day job at Newsweek. Many were surprised to see Kurt Andersen, the author, National Public Radio pundit and one-time editor of New York on scene. "Primary Colors" was written under the pen name Anonymous, and Andersen was editing New York magazine when it ran a literary analysis that correctly unmasked Klein as the likely author.

Memo Pad: Nod To Roberts ... They'll Miss Mary Mac ... Training The Spotlight ...
By Sara James and Jeff Bercovici

NOD TO ROBERTS: After several weeks of deliberation, The New Yorker's fashion director, Michael Roberts, accepted an offer from Vanity Fair this week. Roberts will hold the new title of fashion and style director, a similar position to the one co-fashion director Anne McNally exited last fall.

Over the past six months, Vanity Fair editor in chief Graydon Carter has considered a cornucopia of candidates, ranging from Michelle Sanders of Juicy Couture to Cond? Nast roving editor Joe Zee, to socialites Amanda Cutter Brooks and Kelly Killoren Bensimon. (Vanity Fair and The New Yorker are, like WWD, part of Cond? Nast Publications.)

THEY'LL MISS MARY MAC: When Kent Brownridge retired from Wenner Media in December, industry observers, noting that Brownridge had overseen business operations for the past three decades, labeled it the end of an era. But the real insiders knew there was someone else who, in her own way, was just as responsible for the smooth functioning of the Wenner machine: Mary MacDonald, Jann Wenner's longtime assistant. MacDonald — known to several generations of Wennerites as Mary Mac — has been with the company since 1978; her duties included keeping the famously fastidious Rolling Stone founder's life in order, preparing staffers for their annual desk inspections and serving as den mother to the company's ranks of editorial assistants.

Now Mary Mac is leaving. Sources said she planned to take the summer off and then go into business for herself, possibly by opening a coffee shop on the Jersey Shore. Reached at her desk, MacDonald declined comment, saying she was in the middle of interviewing her replacement. Despite her lack of an executive title, insiders said MacDonald was genuinely indispensable to Wenner — the company and the man. "He depends on her implicitly," said one. Another described her as "a fount of information" about Wenner's inner workings.

TRAINING THE SPOTLIGHT: Entertainment Weekly has added a new profiles section. In the issue hitting newsstands in New York and L.A. today, Spotlight is tucked between News & Notes and the features well. "I wanted to create a section that was more direct from the artists to our readers," said managing editor Rick Tetzeli. "They don't come to EW to find out who [these people] are sleeping with, but they like knowing what they're into, where their careers are." Features on Bill Paxton, Jaime Pressly and Mandy Moore — sans their sexual partners — appear in the first installment.

The last big architectural tweak at EW happened in 2003, when the magazine added the Must List.

Kate White Keeps the Day Job
By James Brady

This was the day Cosmopolitan, which Hearst claims is the largest women's magazine in the world, was launching its own satellite radio channel, and I was lunching with the woman behind it. Is Cosmo editor Kate White the smartest dame in the business? I used to think in terms of Tina Brown, Oprah, Martha Stewart, Mary Berner, Martha Nelson, Cathie Black and Bonnie Fuller, headliners like that.

Kate White? Wasn't she just the nice girl next door who happened to be around when they had an opening? Competent editor, affable, hard-working? Turns out White's a hot ticket. When we met at Circo in Manhattan, former Hearst magnifico Frank Bennack and his successor, Victor Ganzi, greeted her from a neighboring table, and Sirio Maccioni, who owns the joint, came by to say hello, showing off his infant grandson. "Kate, I'm traveling in the right circles," I conceded.

t's been nearly eight years since White took over as editor in chief of Cosmopolitan, succeeding Bonnie Fuller, who'd been there for a cup of coffee, and the legendary Helen Gurley Brown, who'd revived the struggling book and been there forever. And what has White accomplished? She increased circulation by half a million copies per month (on newsstands alone, a telling stat, she's selling 2 million); launched a newly created spin-off, Cosmo Style magazine; started this new Cosmo Radio—they have their own channel on Sirius Satellite Radio (nasdaq: SIRI - news - people ); published hot sellers like Cosmo Kama Sutra through Cosmo Books; and, she adds proudly, "we have a huge Web site."

AND the winner is . . . People magazine, which will feature the first photo of Donald and Melania Trump and their baby boy, Barron, in next week's issue.

The Time Inc. glossy outbid Us Weekly, Star, OK! and Hello for what Trump would only say was "a lot of money." Experts guessed mid-six figures.
