Teen Titles Cooling Off

As everyone who has seen the movie Mean Girls well knows, teenage girls can be ferocious. So can the magazine category that serves them. Just a decade ago, a handful of established players—Seventeen, Teen and YM—sat at the “cool table.” Then, in 1998, Time Inc.’s Teen People moved in, elbowing aside the popular crowd and paving a path for upstarts including Hearst Magazines’ Cosmo Girl, Cond? Nast’s Teen Vogue and Hachette Filipacchi Media’s Elle Girl.

The newcomers changed the order of things, taking over from the upperclassmen that long dominated the category. Emap’s Teen then G+J USA Publishing’s YM bit the dust. Struggling Seventeen changed hands, when Hearst took over from Primedia.

With the surprising shutter this month of Hachette Filipacchi Media’s Elle Girl—a magazine that had enjoyed growth in ad business and circulation and that seemed to be hitting its stride—the ever-fickle category is seeing yet another shakeout. And this time, it is some of those brash upstarts that are threatened.

NOT SO SIMPLE: Real Simple has hit another stumbling block in its march to brand ubiquity. Special projects editor Jenny Rosenstrach, who had been working on the magazine's PBS show and special issues like Real Simple Family, starts a new full-time job today as a features editor at Cookie (like WWD, part of Cond? Nast Publications).

Her departure nearly coincided with that of Elizabeth Mayhew, Real Simple's former director of editorial development, who abruptly left four weeks after she was promoted to oversee TV, books and special issues, as Mediaweek reported earlier this month. At the time, Mayhew's leaving was called amicable, but since then, reports of a tense exchange with managing editor Kristin van Ogtrop have surfaced. (One source at the magazine characterized it as more of an "emotional" conversation behind closed doors.)

OUT NO LONGER IN: "Tuck Your Shirt In" commands a headline in the April issue of Details. The deck beneath continues, "Shirttails that hang down to your fly don't say you're stylish — they say you're immature." And, in case that's not clear enough, the text admonishes, "[T]he bell has long since tolled for the I'm-dressed-up-but-not-really look."

NIMBLE GIANT: The men's entertainment magazine Giant has already made itself over twice in its year-and-a-half of existence. Now it looks to be headed for its most dramatic redesign yet. Smokey Fontaine, Giant's new editor in chief, has been circulating mock-ups of covers and pages to give advertisers a sense of Giant's new direction. In a departure from Giant's cluttered, Technicolor look, the new covers are similar in appearance to those of America, the music and fashion title owned by Damon Dash that Fontaine edited until a few months ago. In fact, last week Fontaine appointed two of his America collaborators, Scott Poulson-Bryant and Graham Rounthwaite, as his editorial director and creative director, respectively. (Greg Williams and Ash Gibson, who held those positions previously, have both left the magazine.)

Everybody DeLay: How great a guy is Tom DeLay? He is a class act who continues to earn the respect of everyone he meets with a double dose of charm and wit. This is one politico who’s simpatico. (Full disclosure: We love our new Armani sweater vests!)

Charlize Angel!: Actually-very-smart sex goddess Charlize Theron (full disclosure: She is loaning us her Miami duplex) has Broadway audiences agog with her performance as Ivana Trump in the new musical “Trump!” Among the opening- night swells, our spies tell us, was The Deadbeat Donald himself (did he get breast implants?), who thinks that gift certificates to Filene’s Basement still hold sway in swagland. Also attending was Alec Baldwin, the BLOVIATOR, or should we say the NEVER-PAY-OLATOR, who, according to insiders, is still heartbroken over his decades-old bust-up with the luscious Kim Basinger, whom we recently vacationed on in Cabo.

Sweet Suite Deal: Just when sources say the world has seen enough of party princess Paris Hilton, there she is again. The hot-bodded celebutante sure looked like a billion bucks the other evening on the deck of gazillionaire Paul Allen’s yacht, as seen from the terrace of the Page Six suite at the St. Petersburg Hilton. (Full disclosure: This column is being typed on generously donated computers using an early version of Microsoft Word.)
