******* NEW YORK, April 18, 2006 -- Hearst Magazines President Cathleen P. Black today announced that Joanna Coles, executive editor of More, has been appointed editor-in-chief of the U.S. edition of Marie Claire, a joint venture between Hearst Magazines and Marie Claire Album, Marie Claire's parent company in Paris. Coles, who joins Marie Claire on May 15th, replaces Lesley Jane Seymour, who is leaving the company. "I'm very impressed with Joanna's experience in both magazines and newspapers, covering everything from current affairs and politics to fashion and features," says Black. "She has an innate talent for what's newsworthy and absolutely has what it takes to lead an international magazine brand like Marie Claire." Coles, 43, has been executive editor of More since September 2004. From August 2001-August 2004, she worked at New York magazine, where she edited the magazine's bi-annual fashion issues. As New York's articles editor and features editor, she was responsible for hiring Naomi Wolff and Jay McInerney and edited cover stories on such personalities as Spalding Gray,Harold Bloom and Alexandra Polier, the "Kerry intern." From May 1998-August 2001, Coles was the New York bureau chief of The Times of London. Previously, she worked for The Guardian, BBC Radio, BBC2 TV and The Daily Telegraph. "I have always been a huge fan of Marie Claire and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to put my stamp on a title that has influenced so many others in the industry with its mix of fashion, beauty and real world issues," says Coles. "In my years as a foreign correspondent for The Guardian and The Times of London, I had the chance to cover international issues, something that has always been an integral part of Marie Claire." Coles adds, "Marie Claire is for women who are not only smart but also stylish. I feel confident that I can give readers exactly what they need from this magazine."
Real Simple's managing editor Kristin van Ogtrop has already filled the gaps left in her masthead by the recent departures of Elizabeth Mayhew and Jenny Rosenstrach. On Monday, she made 10 promotions and two new hires. Sarah Humphreys was promoted to special projects director; Rachel Hardage was named special projects editor; Elizabeth Wells and Melinda Page are now staff editors; Ashley Tate was promoted to associate editor; Julee Wilson is now fashion assistant; Lisa Smith was promoted to associate research editor; Philip Ficks was named deputy art director; Alva Polinsky is now senior accessories editor, and Amanda Armstrong is now editorial assistant. (Did anyone on staff not get a pay and title upgrade?) Two people are also joining the magazine: Alex Ghez, formerly an editorial assistant at Cargo, starts as special projects assistant on May 1, and Marcus Hay, an Australian stylist, photographer, illustrator and designer, will arrive on May 8, to replace Mayhew in running the style department.
Mark A. Sinclair was a skilled writer and graphic designer, an avid baseball fan and a dedicated cyclist who didn't let Chicago's fiercely unpredictable weather stop him from bicycling around the city. A native of California, Mr. Sinclair also loved to travel and had lived in New York City before moving to Chicago, where he worked as an editor at Time Out Chicago, a weekly magazine covering entertainment and sports. He still found time to contribute to a travel and events Web site he created along with a friend. MORE ONLINE
