Marie Claire Appoints Top Editor

Marie Claire magazine named Joanna Coles, the executive editor of More, as its editor in chief yesterday, succeeding Lesley Jane Seymour, as part of the publication's effort to give itself a face-lift. "The magazine needs a fresh perspective," said Jessica Kleiman, a spokeswoman for Marie Claire, which is owned jointly by Hearst Magazines and Marie Claire Album of Paris.

The magazine, which began publication in the United States in 1994, was first edited by Bonnie Fuller and then Glenda Bailey, and its circulation rose quickly. But lately, it has struggled to distinguish itself from other women's magazines. "It used to break ground," Ms. Kleiman said, "and we need to break ground again."

While its paid circulation was up 3 percent, to 970,000, in the last six months of 2005 over the same period in 2004, the number of copies sold on the newsstand has been essentially flat. Nonetheless, Marie Claire is a finalist for a national magazine award for general excellence. But Ms. Seymour's contract was up and the company did not renew it, according to people close to the company. Ms. Seymour, 49, began as editor of Marie Claire in 2001 and is leaving Hearst.

Memo Pad: Claire The Decks ... Video On Demand ... FHM Collections Closes
By Jeff Bercovici, Sara James, and Nina Jones

CLAIRE THE DECKS: Like Moses, who glimpsed the Promised Land but was forbidden to enter it, Marie Claire editor in chief Lesley Jane Seymour won't be joining her staff in Hearst's gleaming new headquarters building. After almost five years in charge, Seymour is stepping down to make way for Joanna Coles, the relatively unknown executive editor of More, whom Hearst named Monday as Marie Claire's new top editor. Coles, a British native who was articles editor at New York before joining More, starts May 15.

Seymour's tenure at Marie Claire, while not quite disastrous, has been far less successful than that of her predecessor, Glenda Bailey, now editor in chief of Harper's Bazaar. Under Bailey, the Marie Claire's newsstand circulation grew by 50 percent in four years; under Seymour, it has fallen roughly 10 percent, averaging 543,908 in the second half of 2005.

VIDEO ON DEMAND: Director-cum-photographers like Spike Lee and Sofia Coppola may soon be getting more magazine work - provided they don't mind bringing their video cameras to the shoots.

A Vogue spokesman confirmed this week that Vogue will begin filming B roll at select photo shoots, starting with a cover story for an upcoming fall issue. It is the latest development in an ongoing push by Cond? Nast Publications, parent of WWD, to get more B roll up on the companion sites of its various magazines in 2006. According to a handful of sources in the company, editors are scrambling to find top talent to film sequences and exotic backdrops that will translate well on video. "They're all running around with their heads cut off," said one FHM COLLECTIONS CLOSES: Fashion may be out of style at British FHM. The British magazine's publisher, Emap, confirmed Tuesday that it has closed FHM Collections, the magazine's biannual fashion title. Its current spring edition will be the last.

"It's always tough to close a title, but this decision should be seen in the context of FHM continuing to expand and evolve across a number of different platforms, including digital, TV and mobile," said Rimi Atwal, business director of FHM U.K. Atwal added that the closure would enable FHM's fashion department to focus on the editorial content in its parent magazine.

More Veteran Coles Named Marie Claire EIC; Seymour Exits

This was the day Cosmopolitan, which Hearst claims is the largest women's magazine in the world, was launching its own satellite radio channel, and I was lunching with the woman behind it. Is Cosmo editor Kate White the smartest dame in the business? I used to think in terms of Tina Brown, Oprah, Martha Stewart, Mary Berner, Martha Nelson, Cathie Black and Bonnie Fuller, headliners like that.

Kate White? Wasn't she just the nice girl next door who happened to be around when they had an opening? Competent editor, affable, hard-working? Turns out White's a hot ticket. When we met at Circo in Manhattan, former Hearst magnifico Frank Bennack and his successor, Victor Ganzi, greeted her from a neighboring table, and Sirio Maccioni, who owns the joint, came by to say hello, showing off his infant grandson. "Kate, I'm traveling in the right circles," I conceded.

t's been nearly eight years since White took over as editor in chief of Cosmopolitan, succeeding Bonnie Fuller, who'd been there for a cup of coffee, and the legendary Helen Gurley Brown, who'd revived the struggling book and been there forever. And what has White accomplished? She increased circulation by half a million copies per month (on newsstands alone, a telling stat, she's selling 2 million); launched a newly created spin-off, Cosmo Style magazine; started this new Cosmo Radio-they have their own channel on Sirius Satellite Radio (nasdaq: SIRI - news - people ); published hot sellers like Cosmo Kama Sutra through Cosmo Books; and, she adds proudly, "we have a huge Web site."

Lesley Jane Seymour, editor in chief of Marie Claire, has been replaced by More executive editor Joanna Coles, Hearst Magazines announced this afternoon. Seymour, who was appointed MC editor in 2001, and was previously editor of Hearst's Redbook, is leaving the company.

"Lesley did a great job, but the magazine needed a fresh perspective," said a Hearst spokesperson. "We think Joanna is the right person to do it." The change comes at a curious time, given that it comes on the eve of the May 9 National Magazine Awards. Seymour led Marie Claire to its first National Magazine Award nomination for General Excellence-its first nod in at least five years.

Also, Marie Claire's paid circulation grew 3.1 percent to 970,617 in last year's second half, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Newsstand sales were flat at 543,908. "I'm going out on a high note. The magazine's in great shape," said Seymour. "I get the summer off. Who can ask for more!"

HEARST GLOSSY GETS U.K. EDITRIX
By KEITH J. KELLY

Meredith Corp. has lost two top editors in a matter of days, knocking the stuffing out of its stock. In the latest defection, Joanna Coles, a British import in the No. 2 spot at Meredith's More magazine, was lured to replace Lesley Jane Seymour as editor-in-chief at Marie Claire.

In the move that might have the bigger impact on Meredith, the company acknowledged that Karol Dewulf Nickell, the editor-in-chief of its flagship, Better Homes & Gardens, had left the company last Wednesday. On a day when stocks soared on Wall Street, Meredith shares were creamed, falling 8.6 percent, or $4.77, to $50.79.

The magazine posted a good 2005 on the ad front, but has struggled this year. Time Inc. veteran Andy Salereyan, a veteran publisher from the launch of Real Simple, had moved over as president of the brand six weeks ago. Some industry sources speculated Nickell clashed with the new boss.

SHOCK FOR SURE, WITH TOUCHES OF AWE
By KEITH J. KELLY

ONE of the few launches from a major magazine publisher will hit newsstands on May 30 when Hachette Filipacchi Media unleashes Shock with a print run of 300,000 and a cover price of only $1.99. "We think we are a category buster with a new product," said Hachette Filipacchi CEO Jack Kliger.

The magazine's content will range from the bizarre to the sexy - although only the Web site will have the nudity that made it into print in a French version, Choc, launched two-and-a-half years ago.

"We're certainly going to show images that press the envelope a little bit," said Mike Hammer, the editor-in-chief of the American version and formally the editor-in-chief of Dennis Publishing's Stuff.

Hachette Filipacchi Finds a Job Worse Than Jon Friedman's

Start saving your pennies, folks ... especially if you have some ancient coins worth a gillion bucks. Well, you will actually only need 199 of today's copper coins to get a copy of Hachette Filipacchi Media's new title Shock

So what will $1.99 get you in today's world of newsstand glossies? Definitely more than you pay for.

In the debut issue that Media Ink saw, there is a feature on a man that the magazine describes as having one of the worst jobs in the world - inspecting the butts of Chinese military recruits to make sure they are clean as well as free of any suggestion of homosexuality. It comes with a picture of the inspection taking place.

Ed hears ...

... that the deputy editor of Vibe Vixen, the quarterly urban women's magazine published by Vibe/Spin Ventures, is without an assistant. Ed's tipster said to contact Ayana Byrd. Probably best not to mention Ed.

... that a freelance assistant managing editor is needed full time for three months at RVLiving Magazine (Rodale, in NYC) to cover the managing editor's maternity leave. Duties include overseeing workflow and budgets for two bimonthly custom magazines and hiring freelancers . Must be highly motivated, extremely organized, flexible, patient, have grace under pressure and be able to juggle all that arises with the two magazines. It's a great chance to step up to managing editor from a very experienced AME. Writing is not a part of this job, it's mostly procedural. Please send salary requirements, references and resume to tara.cox@rodale.com. (OK to mention Ed)

... that Dennis Digital, the WEB division of Dennis Publishing, seeks a college student to help maintain its databases of archived magazine content and support the online editorial division as needed. The PAID intern will be responsible for translating articles from InDesign into HTML, requesting art or photos for articles where required, transcribing interviews, entering the articles and related images into database tools, and otherwise fulfilling the production and editorial requests of staff editors. The ideal candidate will be able to work all day Monday through Friday, or at least most of the day. Pay is minimal and there is no opportunity for writing. Web and HTML experience not required. Send resumes and cover letters to internships@dennispub.com. No phone calls. (OK to mention Ed.)

Internships

... that a reporter/researcher with a background in covering the teen market is needed for a summer internship with ELLEgirl.com. Please note this is NOT an internship with the print magazine. The work would focus entirely on the website, so web savvy is helpful. Intern will help with research and writing news, celebrity and fashion features relevant to the teen market, photo research, helping the fashion and beauty departments with calling in and returning product, and managing credits. An interest in fashion is helpful, but not required. Please send a resume and cover letter to editor@ellegirl.com.

... that CHILD magazine, a lifestyle publication for parents, is still looking for a qualified photo intern to work in our two person department. This internship can begin as early as mid-May, however we can wait until the summer semester begins if necessary. This is not a paid internship so we do need someone to fill the position who will be receiving school credit and who is able to come to our office for an interview. Photography majors in their junior or senior year are encouraged to apply. Duties may include assisting photo editors with logistics of producing shoots, conducting photo research for the magazine, calling in portfolios of photographers and stylists and well as returning published art work. We work with photographers specializing in still life, fashion, food, lifestyle and portraiture so this is a great opportunity for someone interesting in pursuing a career in photography or photo editing. The photo department would like an intern at least two days a week from 10 to 6pm but we can be flexible with the schedule. Interested candidates should email a cover letter and resume to melissa.malinowsky@meredith.com (OK to mention Ed)
