1. The New York Times
Page Six, the Magazine, Is Returning (With an Edge, of Sorts)
Julie Bosman
April 20, 2006
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/20/business/media/20adco.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&oref=login&adxnnlx=1145544652-U2MmMnvMTic3jVLasx5LVA

At last count, roughly a dozen celebrity magazines filled newsstands in a bid to feed the maw of a gossip-hungry public. The New York Post is hoping there is room for at least one more. Despite the scandal surrounding Page Six, its gossip column, The Post is forging ahead with plans to publish a second issue of Page Six, the Magazine, a glossy version of the gossip column that began in February. The Post is owned by the News Corporation.

And when it comes to advertising in a crowded field and a tough business environment, the Page Six magazine may have an edge — about one-third of the more than 30 advertisers in the first issue received positive mentions in the columns of Page Six in the last year. Page Six reporters routinely cultivate relationships with publicists who feed them and other reporters items about celebrities spotted in the restaurants, hotels and nightclubs they represent. Placing an ad in the Page Six magazine may be another way for advertisers, and the publicists they hire, to stay on friendly terms with The Post, said Robert S. Boynton, the director of the magazine program at New York University and the author of "The New New Journalism." "Put it this way: it's a small price to pay for the possibility of getting favorable coverage," Mr. Boynton said.

A full-page color ad in the first issue of the Page Six magazine — a mix of celebrity party photos, thumbnail restaurant reviews and gossip items, with the actress Angelina Jolie on the cover — sold for $34,000. That price has been raised to $36,000 for the September issue. Howard Rubenstein, The Post's spokesman, said the advertisers' appearance in the Page Six magazine and the Page Six gossip column is "purely coincidental." The magazine's original editor, Jared Paul Stern, will not edit the next issue, which is to return on Sept. 14. Mr. Stern, the longtime Post contributor who has been accused of extortion by Ronald W. Burkle, a California billionaire, will be replaced by Richard Johnson, the editor of Page Six, Mr. Rubenstein said. Mr. Stern denies Mr. Burkle's accusation.

2. The New York Daily News
Jess, Nick split on discussing rift
By Ben Widdicombe
April 20, 2006

Jessica Simpson pulled out of a cover story for the September issue of Vanity Fair magazine because she refused to discuss her painful breakup with Nick Lachey. Editor Graydon Carter had made the topic a requirement for the story, to be illustrated with a glamorous cover-shoot by top photographer Mario Testino, according to one insider. A rep for the magazine declined to comment.

But while Jessica is taking the high road on talking about her relationship, her ex came out this week with a painfully honest interview given to Rolling Stone magazine and reprinted in Us Weekly. "It breaks my heart that I couldn't make Jessica happy. ... I wanted to be everything to my wife," he said. "I'd marry her all over again. Because I still love her. It would be a lot easier to walk away if I didn't."

Their MTV show, "Newlyweds," didn't always help. "Jessica and I began playing these parts [of ditsy wife and good-guy husband] even when we were by ourselves. ... I don't know if we would have worked if we'd been soybean farmers in Iowa," he said. "I don't know if there were other men ... But if she did cheat, it was the result of something bigger, not the reason we didn't work."

Memo Pad: Sur-Face Lifts ... Weird Science
By Sara James
April 20, 2006

UR-FACE LIFTS: Fool Surface once, get a reprimand. Try to fool them twice, and be prepared for a public humiliation. Style editor Bernardo Siaotong of Surface last week sent this e-mail to a number of people in the fashion industry: "You may have received a sample request from [stylist] Amber Gordon recently about a Surface shoot taking place in Los Angeles next week. Please DISREGARD this request as it is entirely fallacious. She has even gone to extremes by issuing a false letter of responsibility, replete with our letterhead…[and] is now backtracking and saying the shoot is for Monte Carlo magazine. It would be wise for you to contact them in France and validate the nature of this request."

WEIRD SCIENCE: If readers of Discover knew just how little cutting-edge science had gone into producing the technology-obsessed magazine's May cover, they might rethink their subscriptions. According to owner Bob Guccione Jr., it is "the lowest-tech cover ever done, certainly in the age of computers." The cover story is a profile of Caltech astronomer Michael Brown, who is leading the search for new planets. Guccione, who serves as Discover's de facto editorial director as well as its chief executive (editor in chief Stephen Petranek recently stepped down, and a replacement has not been named), said he didn't want to tease the story with yet another stunning, Technicolor satellite image of the cosmos. "We've seen that so many times, it becomes a bit neutralizing," he explained.
