******* They are editor-in-chief stalwarts with a combined 26 years at the helm, yet Nickell and Seymour are out at, respectively, Better Homes and Gardens/Marie Claire for--apparently--very different reasons. In a sense like Karol DeWulf Nickell and Meredith Corp., Ungaro's 29-year r?sum? listed one "employer": Family Circle. It was FC's May 2005 sale by Gruner + Jahr to Meredith that ended her 11-year stint as editor-in-chief because new management (led by Meredith Publishing Group president Jack Griffin) did not retain her (min, July 11, 2005). What to do? "I consulted," Ungaro tells min, "and although clients included USA Today and American Business Media [she was a judge at last month's Jesse H. Neal Awards], my interest was working for a nonprofit organization. The biggest satisfaction I received at FC was helping people with serious illnesses [both through the Make a Wish Foundation and a blood-type matching program for leukemia patients] and parents find missing children [min, April 20, 1998, et seq.]. If I joined another magazine, I'm not sure whether I could bring the same enthusiasm that I brought to FC." Enter the 20-year-old James Beard Foundation, started in memory of Beard (1903-1985), who was a champion of American cuisine long before today's "celebrity chefs." (He appeared on NBCs Today during the 1950s.) Its mission--"to celebrate, preserve, and nurture America's culinary heritage..."--is now Ungaro's mission, as she was elected president by a board of directors that includes Bon App?tit editor-in-chief (since July 1999) Barbara Fairchild. Ungaro begins today (April 24), and her responsibilities include awarding academic scholarships to students in culinary schools, and--close to the vest--being in charge of what is now the twice-yearly James Beard Foundation magazine. "I'm going to make it better," she says, "including increasing the frequency, and, perhaps, giving it a new name." MORE ONLINE 2. Chicago Tribune
In a throwback to a technology popular when kids still put baseball cards between their bicycle spokes, Rolling Stone magazine is printing the cover of its 1,000th issue in 3-D. The special cover--which is a montage similar to the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album and includes images of hundreds of pop culture luminaries since the late 1960s--is intended to be an eye-popping attention grabber. "We wanted to do something that wasn't done before that would instantly stand out," said Will Dana, Rolling Stone's managing editor. "We wanted a `wow' factor. It looks amazing." ? MORE ONLINE 3. New York Observer The following passages appear in either the May-June 2006 Cookie ("All the Best for Your Family") or the May 2006 Playboy ("Entertainment for Men"). Which is which? Answers after the jump. 1. "I found myself in the morning with my head at the foot of the bed and my feet at the pillow." 2. "Favorite author and why: Shel Silverstein--his wit + wisdom are infectious!" MORE ONLINE ******* (Please note that this is NOT an Ed-sponsored event.)
