*******
******* THERE is fear and loathing at Marie Claire as staffers get ready for new Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles to take up her duties. The title has been under pressure from its French partners, and most are expecting Coles to engineer a housecleaning. Yesterday, she was said to be in Paris going over plans and is due back Thursday. One of the most delicious rumors making the rounds is that Donald Robertson, the longtime confidant of Bonnie Fuller - and most recently the top design person at Cond? Nast's defunct men's shopping magazine Cargo (which he just left) - will make a return into the Hearst empire as the creative director of Marie Claire. (The company is a joint venture between Hearst and Paris-based Marie Claire Album). Industry observers seemed divided on the merits of Robertson at Marie Claire. "It's not without possibilities, but could they possibly afford him financially?" asked one source. Thanks to his days teamed up with Fuller when she was editor-in-chief of Glamour, his Cond? Nast pay had climbed into the high six figures, sources said. MORE ONLINE 2.AM New YorkFull'er Up: Dating advice from Bonnie Fuller By Julia Allison 4/24/06 http://www.amny.com/entertainment/am-dating0424,0,580611.story?coll=am-entertainment-utility Bonnie Fuller believes in ultimatums. More than 23 years ago, she gave her now-husband a big one: "Either propose in six months or it's over." That was their third date. Bonnie Fuller does not mess around. The woman who's run four of the biggest women's magazines in the country (YM, Marie Claire, Cosmo and Glamour), along with two of the nation's guiltiest pleasures (Us Weekly and Star), has an instinctive aptitude - some say genius - for knowing what women want. And according to Fuller, what women want (besides invasive candids of stars being "just like us", except richer and more beautiful) is basically, well, everything. MORE ONLINE 3.Ad AgeWenner Finds New Publisher at 'Maxim' By Nat Ives 4/24/06 http://www.adage.com/mediaworks/article.php?article_id=108794 Wenner Media Chairman Jann Wenner today named a new publisher for his cherished Rolling Stone: Tim Castelli, who had been associate publisher at Dennis Publishing's Maxim. Associate Publisher Ray Chelstowski had been acting publisher since Feb. 17, when Steve DeLuca abruptly left after failing to hammer out a new contract with Mr. Wenner. "Jann felt if we couldn't see eye to eye that it was best to part ways," Mr. DeLuca told Advertising Age that day. He had been publisher since early 2004. Before Mr. Castelli's turn at Maxim, he spent 13 years at Ziff Davis Media, eventually becoming senior VP-group publisher for the company's consumer technology group. During his time there, he also did a stint as publisher of PC Magazine and helped launch Sync, which closed last year. MORE ONLINE 4. WWDLeaving Her Print…. Strokes Get Rolled By Jeff Bercovici 4/26/06 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/105967 In promoting this week's debut of Blueprint, its new women's service magazine for thirtysomethings, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia neglected to mention one fact: Rebecca Thuss, the title's editor, resigned two weeks ago. Margaret Roach, MSLO's editorial director, confirmed Thuss' departure to WWD on Tuesday. "Unfortunately for us, she, citing personal reasons, had to leave the company," she said. "She's a real star performer. We just have to hope all is well and she'll be back to us before too long." Asked why MSLO didn't say anything earlier, Roach said: "Nobody asked." A fast exit is practically standard operating procedure for new women's magazines. Real Simple's launch editor, Susan Wyland, walked after three issues, and Ellen Kunes, founding editor of O, The Oprah Magazine, lasted about as long. Thuss, a 10-year veteran of MSLO and former style director of Martha Stewart Weddings, may be easier to replace; according to sources familiar with Blueprint's operation, development editor Tom Prince, who resides above her on the masthead, supplied most of the vision for the magazine. Roach said she will recruit a new editor. "This is all new so we're just in the beginning stages of thinking about that." STROKES GET ROLLED: Don't be surprised if The Strokes seem less than ecstatic during their performance at Rolling Stone's 1,000th issue celebration next week. According to sources with detailed knowledge of the party planning, the band got into a last-minute disagreement over its fee with Wenner Media. After reaching a verbal agreement to play at the May 4 event, the band rearranged its tour schedule. At that point, according to a source, Wenner attempted to reduce the fee it had agreed to pay, assuming its editorial clout would supply the necessary leverage. However, another insider disputed that, claiming it was the band that tried to jack up its price after the fact, leaving Wenner to seek unsuccessfully to bargain them back down to the original sum.
