1. The New York Post
Editrix Out At Martha Glossy
By Keith J. Kelly
April 27, 2006
http://www.nypost.com/business/65121.htm

The editor of Blueprint, Martha Stewart's latest magazine that aims to capture younger multi-tasking women as readers, has quit, a week before the magazine even hits the stands. Rebecca Thuss, the editor of the home, fashion and design magazine was prominently featured in the first issue, which was previewed for the press on Monday and is due out May 1. The news about Thuss' sudden departure was slipped into the "Memo Pad" column in the fashion trade Woman's Wear Daily yesterday. She left last Friday.

Asked why the exit wasn't revealed as the company was seeking pre-launch publicity, corporate Editorial Director Margaret Roach told WWD, "No one asked." The company gave the reason that she "left for personal reasons." Thuss could not be reached for comment. Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia insists there was no editorial dispute behind the departure of the 10-year company veteran, who earlier worked on the launch of Martha Stewart Weddings. In fact, the company tossed her a going-away party in the 25th floor conference room at its Chelsea headquarters on her last day.

Insiders are said to know the cause of her departure and are very supportive. Said her immediate boss, Tom Prince, the corporate development editor who did much of the early work on the magazine, "She left on great terms with everybody and we fully expect her to be back at some point." Roach and publishing President Lauren Stanich are searching for a successor while layouts are being shot for a second issue that is set for August.

Memo Pad: Seventeen Goes Deluxe...Poaching Season
By Jeff Bercovici and Samantha Conti

SEVENTEEN GOES DELUXE: The failure of Seventeen's reality series to earn a second season on MTV hasn't diminished the title's appetite for brand extensions. This fall, Hearst will publish the first installment of Deluxe, a Seventeen supplement about "West Coast luxury fashion," according to editor in chief Atoosa Rubenstein. The 24-page outsert will be polybagged with the September issue and will go out to subscribers who live in households with an income of at least $75,000. (Another 50,000 copies will be distributed at retail.)

Deluxe's editor will be stylist-to-the-stars Rachel Zoe, whom Rubenstein calls "an old friend of mine." "Her vision has been mostly living art," she added, in a rather grand reference to Zoe's celebrity clientele. "I thought it would be fun to put that on paper and do a project around it." Naturally, one of Zoe's clients, Nicole Richie, will be on the cover, shot by the singly named photographer Tesh. The fashions highlighted will be "very Robertson Boulevard, very insider-y," promised Rubenstein.

POACHING SEASON: Marie Claire very nearly had a hot Cond? Nast U.K. editor at its helm — but the deal crumbled at the last minute. Industry sources in New York say Hearst was in pursuit of Jo Elvin, who launched the "purse-sized" British Glamour five years ago. Elvin, who was approached by Hearst while still on maternity leave, was all ready to move to New York to take the job. But then she had a chat with Cond? Nast U.K.'s managing director, Nicholas Coleridge — and apparently changed her mind in about 20 minutes.

The sources say her final decision wasn't about the money. Hearst eventually named another British-trained editor to the post: Joanna Coles, former executive editor of More. The Australian-born Elvin, who had launched such U.K. teen titles as B and Sugar in the Nineties, declined to comment. Coleridge would only say: "I have a policy of never commenting when Hearst tries to pinch our good people. If I commented every time, I'd never be out of the press." A Hearst U.S. spokeswoman, meanwhile, said, "We were really looking for someone who edits an adult-size magazine and we're very happy with our choice."
