******* The White House said the details of an investigation into the killings of Iraqi civilians in Haditha in November 2005 will be released to the public when the probe is completed. On Tuesday, White House spokesman Tony Snow said President Bush learned of the killings only after a reporter from Time magazine asked questions. Time published an article in March that said the Pentagon was investigating the incident. Asked when Bush was first briefed about the events in Haditha, an insurgent stronghold in western Iraq, Snow replied Tuesday: "When a Time reporter first made the call." The Vogue editor is famously choosy about her covers, but this was someone else’s: the front page of the May 3 Women’s Wear Daily. Two days before, she had hosted the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—the annual live, glittery enactment of Ms. Wintour’s personally curated Friendster page. And WWD had buried it inside, in some 700 words, on pages four and five. Ms. Wintour telephoned Patrick McCarthy, the editorial director of the Fairchild Fashion Group, which publishes WWD. She let him know her feelings. “She called to express her frustration with the placement of the coverage,” Vogue spokesman Patrick O’Connell said by phone on May 30. “It had nothing to do with the tone of the coverage. MORE ONLINE 4. NY MetroThere at the New Yorker By Amy Benfer 5/31/06 http://ny.metro.us/metro/local/article/There_at_the_New_Yorker/2775.html David Remnick started his career as a reporter at the Washington Post. He spent four years at the paper’s Moscow bureau starting in 1988. In 1998, he was named editor of the New Yorker, where he has worked as a staff writer since 1992. Remnick talked to Metro about his new book, “Reporting,” a collection of his work for the magazine that includes profiles of politicians, writers and boxers. In your piece on New Orleans, you set up a devastating contrast between President Johnson’s response to Hurricane Betsy and President Bush’s with Hurricane Katrina. That just came from futzing around on the Internet. The hard part is figuring out what your story is. Like everyone else, I went down there and got in boats and rode around and met people who were desperate. And then you come back, and you realize what you’ve got in your notebooks looks a lot like what everyone else has. Not to trivialize it — it was horrible, the politics were almost as horrible — and yet there’s 2000 people down there. So what do you do? Some of it’s about imagination; finding where the beads go on this necklace; trying to tell a story that has not yet been told. Maybe I succeeded, maybe I didn’t. But that’s the attempt. A lot of our writers don’t like to go to events like that. It makes them crazy to be around other reporters. MORE ONLINE 5. LA TimesFBI Searches Paparazzi Firm, Owner’s Home By Richard Winton & Greg Krikorian 5/26/06 http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-paparazzi26may26,1,469252.story?ctrack=1&cset=true Has the heated world of celebrity gossip entered the realm of espionage? The FBI this week served search warrants at the business and home of the co-owner of a paparazzi agency, trying to determine whether someone attempted to hack into the computer system at US Weekly, according to several law enforcement sources and the co-owner's spokesman. Federal agents want to know whether one of the owners of Sunset Photo and News attempted to learn what stories the staff at US Weekly, a Hollywood gossip magazine, was working on, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Agents on Tuesday seized at least one computer during a search of the Topanga Canyon home of Jill Ishkanian, said her spokesman, Glenn Feldman. Ishkanian, 41, is the former West Coast editor of US Weekly who left the magazine to form Sunset Photo and News with two other investors.
