******* ABC World News Tonight anchor Charles Gibson told a Chicago radio station Wednesday that he was misquoted in a New York magazine article that called into question the reporting of news from Africa. During a 16-minute interview on WVON-AM's "The Roland S. Martin Show," Gibson responded to a May 29th article by Joe Hagan in New York Magazine titled, "Charles in Charge." According to the Q and A, Hagan asked Gibson if he would be traveling around the globe as much as his competitor, NBC's Brian Williams. Gibson's response? "That's because of Katrina; you saw him going down there. Now he's in Africa. I don't know why you do that. Why the hell do you go to Africa? It's certainly an interesting choice. We'll do travel, when it warrants. After the issue was discussed for an hour on WVON, Gibson called into the show to respond. "This guy, who I will never talk to again from New York magazine who is something of a snake, he took my quote and I think perverted the meaning of it to indicate in some way that I was insensitive to news from one of the five major continents in the world," he said. MORE ONLINE 2.MediaBistro: FishbowlPemberton Out at Spin By Dylan Stableford 6/01/06 http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/magazines/breaking_pemberton_out_at_spin_37830.asp The second honeymoon for Andy Pemberton and Spin is over, FishbowlNY has learned. According to a FishbowlNY source with knowledge of the situation, the rumor that Pemberton - who replaced editor Sia Michel at Spin after its sale to Hartle Media three months ago - would be ousted is all-but-confirmed. "It's a done deal," says the source. A spokesperson for Spin, however, denies that is a "done deal" and that Pemberton is "still here" and that "nothing has happened." . Pemberton, the former editor at Blender, told FishbowlNY in an unpublished interview last week that the magazine's focus had shifted to a broader view, not only covering music for 18-to-25 year olds but also "the culture that surrounds them." MORE ONLINE 3.WWDMystery Girl… Crossing Online…Spinning his wheels By Jeff Bercovici & Sara James 6/02/06 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/106799 Why has Cosmogirl's executive editor, Ann Shoket, been meeting on the sly with Hearst higher-ups, including editorial talent director Eliot Kaplan and president Cathleen Black? That's what people on the teen title's staff would like to know. As usual, in the absence of any firm answers, they're speculating like mad. One scenario, of Shoket taking over for editor in chief Susan Schulz, seems unlikely: Although the title's newsstand sales average is down somewhat from last year, Cosmogirl is still the top seller in the category, and Schulz has a year left on her contract. The contract of Seventeen editor in chief Atoosa Rubenstein, on the other hand, is up for renewal this summer - but most insiders expect her to stay on. CROSSING ONLINE: Two more Webheads have establishment jobs thanks to Cond? Nast's increasing fascination with the Internet. The company, which also owns WWD, committed earlier this year to devote more resources to online development and to hire designated Web editors at each of its glossy titles Vanity Fair and The New Yorker are the latest to staff up. Vanity Fair has hired Andrew Hearst, the blogger behind Panopticist.com. (David Friend, editor of creative development, will continue to oversee the magazine's online push.) And Blake Eskin will return to The New Yorker on June 19. (He was previously a fact checker there and more recently was the founder of Nextbook.org, a nonprofit online Jewish culture magazine; Eskin will work alongside The New Yorker's existing Web manager, Matt Dellinger.) MORE ONLINE 4. New York PostPrint Casualties of War By Keith J. Kelly 6/02/06 http://www.nypost.com/business/64530.htm ONE of the first - and toughest - tasks facing incoming Time magazine editor Richard Stengel is replenishing the Baghdad bureau. While the bureau has certainly earned its stars - most notably by reporting the apparent shooting of unarmed civilians by U.S. Marines in Haditha last November - it has been hit by two big departures. Tim McGirk, who shepherded the original story which broke in January, moved last month to be Jerusalem's bureau chief, while the other principal architect of the story, Bobby Ghosh, is now the Baghdad bureau chief. LA TimesFBI Searches Paparazzi Firm, Owner's Home By Richard Winton & Greg Krikorian 5/26/06 http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-paparazzi26may26,1,469252.story?ctrack=1&cset=true Has the heated world of celebrity gossip entered the realm of espionage? The FBI this week served search warrants at the business and home of the co-owner of a paparazzi agency, trying to determine whether someone attempted to hack into the computer system at US Weekly, according to several law enforcement sources and the co-owner's spokesman. Federal agents want to know whether one of the owners of Sunset Photo and News attempted to learn what stories the staff at US Weekly, a Hollywood gossip magazine, was working on, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Agents on Tuesday seized at least one computer during a search of the Topanga Canyon home of Jill Ishkanian, said her spokesman, Glenn Feldman. Ishkanian, 41, is the former West Coast editor of US Weekly who left the magazine to form Sunset Photo and News with two other investors.
