******* 1. Editor & Publisher Controversy in the press surrounding "Da Vinci Code" author Dan Brown, just beginning to fade, will likely revive later this week when the July issue of Vanity Fair hits the stands. According to an advance copy, the magazine's contributing editor Seth Mnookin alleges -- in a massive article titled "DaVinci Clone?" -- two new instances of possible plagiarism in Brown's past. Two textual analysis experts also tell him they believe Brown borrowed the plot for his book from Lewis Perdue's "Daughter of God." The two libel experts say they are convinced Brown borrowed heavily from the Perdue book, despite Brown's recent victory in court. John Olsson, the director of Britain's Forensic Linguistics Institute, said, "This is the most blatant example of in-your-face plagiarism I've ever seen. It just goes on and on. There are literally hundreds of parallels." Brown did not respond to requests for comment from Vanity Fair. Peter Petre, a senior editor at large at Fortune magazine and co-author of best sellers by Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf and by Thomas J. Watson Jr., former chairman of I.B.M., will help Mr. Greenspan write his book. Mr. Greenspan, who sold the book for an $8.5 million advance in March, has been interviewing ghostwriting candidates since then. Robert B. Barnett, the lawyer who represented Mr. Greenspan in the negotiations, declined to comment on how much Mr. Petre would be paid. "We reached an agreement that was acceptable and equitable to both sides," he said. Mr. Barnett said that the issue of credit for Mr. Petre had not been resolved. (Mr. Petre received a reported $500,000 for his work on General Schwarzkopf's book.) MORE ONLINE
International Business Machines has decided to move advertising out of McGraw-Hill's BusinessWeek magazine for the foreseeable future, according to people familiar with the situation. IBM has been one of BusinessWeek's top advertisers in recent years, according to TNS Media Intelligence, although it had reduced its spending to $9.3 million last year from $14.9 million in 2004. One reason for IBM's move is related to pricing, the people said. BusinessWeek wasn't willing to give IBM the level of discount sought by the marketer. MORE ONLINE
It was last June when Ed Adler, EVP of corporate communications for Time Warner (TW), started hearing the rumors: Carl Icahn, they said, was coming. "When you hear rumors, you do not believe them," he muses. "But sure enough, they were right." A couple of months after the rumors began, billionaire financier Icahn formally launched his assault on TW, seeking to break the company into four parts, cut costs, and replace top management. For TW's communications team, the high-profile assault by one of the most famously aggressive investors of all time sparked a months-long public fight that pitted Icahn's brash and forceful PR strategy against the more restrained maneuverings of the media world's biggest titan. The editor in chief and publisher of Women's Travel magazine, Sabrina Sakata, has begun posting the mastheads of major consumer magazines — from Allure to Zink, about 115 so far — on her new Web site Mastheads.org. Sakata has also provided e-mail configurations to reach editors at the various publications, and plans to, along with a few volunteers, update the mastheads with any staff changes each month. "[It's] basically my dream writing resource," she said. "I always wished someone would put this together, and I guess last month I just stopped wishing and just got off my ass, compiled the magazines that I had subscriptions to and e-mailed some contacts to see if they wanted to contribute....So far it has been pretty easy going. Although last week I had to camp out at the Brooklyn Public Library to get about 60 updated mastheads — the periodicals librarian kept giving me dirty looks." Sakata started Mastheads.org without any seed money, though she will open a subscription store today for all of the magazines she is tracking, and several media, public relations and publishing companies have approached her about advertising on the site. Perhaps she should team up with the anonymous Magazinedeathpool.com for a group buy?
