******* PEOPLE magazine paid more than $4.1 million for the North American rights to photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's baby Shiloh, but the worldwide rights to shots of the ultimately celebrity kidlet could top $10 million. People's deal was first reported by Page Six yesterday. That price tag would make them the most expensive pictures in celebrity magazine history. Pitt and Jolie are donating all proceeds to charity. People narrowly nosed out the American edition of OK!, owned by Richard Desmond, and Us Weekly, owned by Jann Wenner and Disney, which both bid in the $4 million range. MORE ONLINE 2.Editor & PublishUpcoming 'Vanity Fair' Article Raises New Issues About 'Da Vinci Code' Author By Staff 6/06/06 http://www.mediainfo.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002614037 Controversy in the press surrounding "Da Vinci Code" author Dan Brown, just beginning to fade, will likely revive later this week when the July issue of Vanity Fair hits the stands. According to an advance copy, the magazine's contributing editor Seth Mnookin alleges -- in a massive article titled "DaVinci Clone?" -- two new instances of possible plagiarism in Brown's past. Two textual analysis experts also tell him they believe Brown borrowed the plot for his book from Lewis Perdue's "Daughter of God." The two libel experts say they are convinced Brown borrowed heavily from the Perdue book, despite Brown's recent victory in court. John Olsson, the director of Britain's Forensic Linguistics Institute, has said, "This is the most blatant example of in-your-face plagiarism I've ever seen. It just goes on and on. There are literally hundreds of parallels." . Brown did not respond to requests for comment from Vanity Fair. Mnookin also cites an incident in which Brown copied for "The DaVinci Code" an exact passage from the paper "Leonardo's Lost Robot," written by robotics expert Mark Rosheim. Brown's publisher, Doubleday, said it was covered under fair-use. Rosheim says, "Every now and then I'll be giving a talk and someone will come in with The Da Vinci Code and ask me to sign a copy. Either that or they'll accuse me of copying him." MORE ONLINE 3. The New CriterionTales from the crypt By James Wolcott 6/07/06 http://www.newcriterion.com/archives/24/06/tales-from-the-crypt/ When word arrived last autumn that The New Yorker was releasing a deluxe boxed CD set of every issue of the magazine published since its monocled dandy espied a butterfly on the cover of the February 21, 1925 debut, my first thought was: “Happy-doodle-day!”[1] That may speak to a certain lack of excitement in my life, but for a magazine junkie, this was the mother lode, the treasure of the Sierra Madre. Never again would I haunt the flea markets for back issues from the 1930s and 1940s, hoping to luck into a John O'Hara story I hadn't read before, or a sporty Peter Arno cover. Professiona lly, it was also a must-have. For journalists, researchers, historians, educators, and average buffs, the technological breakthrough in the digitalization of magazine archives is a boon to cultural preservation, putting the past-history as it happened-within fingertip reach. Other weeklies, such as The Nation and The New Republic, have digitized their archives, but those virtual libraries are maintained online, requiring subscription fees or single payments to access articles. (I've used both services to excavate art and movie reviews by Manny Farber, one of my critical idols, that otherwise would have remained orphaned within bound volumes.) The New Yorker was doing The Nation and The New Republic one better by bypassing the entire online rigamarole and giving readers the complete works in a handsome, handy, illustrated multi-disk set. MORE ONLINE 4. USA TodayCeleb mags go to court over baby photo By AP 6/07/06 http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2006-06-07-celeb-mags_x.htm People and Hello! magazines launched legal action Wednesday against two websites that published a picture of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt with their newborn daughter. Pitt and Jolie sold rights to the images of Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, born May 27 in Namibia, through Getty Images photo agency. The couple said all proceeds would be donated to a charity, not yet named. People magazine paid a reported $4 million for the right to release the pictures in North America, while Hello! obtained British rights. MORE ONLINE 5. WWDRollins Rolls Out…iPages By Jeff Bercovici 6/07/06 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/106912 The demise of Ellegirl has claimed a belated casualty: John Rollins, publisher of Elle since April 2005, quietly left the company last week. A former group publisher of Vibe and Spin, Rollins was hired to free up Carol Smith, publishing director of the Elle Group, to devote more attention to other properties, including Ellegirl and a women's service title called Red. The partnership seems to have worked well: Elle's ad pages were up 10.7 percent last year, and are up another 13.6 percent in the first half of 2006, according to Media Industry Newsletter. But parent company Hachette Filipacchi Media declined to go ahead with Red after a test issue generated middling sales numbers. Then, in April, Hachette shut down Ellegirl (or, at least, its print edition - plans call for it to hang around as a Web-only publication). "Once the dust had settled after the shutdown, we went through the books and realized we were a little top heavy in management," said Rollins. "Frankly, there wasn't a need for an independent publisher of Elle when that's pretty much all Carol does now." (Well, not quite all - Smith still oversees new spin-off Elle Accessories and Elle.com.) Rollins said he has been in discussions with several companies and expects to announce a new post shortly. iPAGES: If you publish a music magazine, it makes sense to give it away where the hardcore music consumers congregate. These days, that means iTunes, Apple's online song store. That's where The Fader will be offering free downloads of its summer issue beginning today. According to publisher Andy Cohn, it's the first time an entire magazine has been distributed over iTunes, which will feature the issue in its "New and Notable" podcasts section. Given The Fader's relatively small circulation of 87,500, it could prove a substantial extension of the title's reach. "We want to use it as an opportunity to expose The Fader to as many people as possible," Cohn said.
