******* After winning the very expensive rights to the first photographs of Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, the editors at People magazine formed a publicity plan. Appear for an interview with Matt Lauer on the NBC "Today" show. Give the photos to the tabloids, which will run them in full color on their front pages. Then, on Friday, release the pictures in glossy form to the world on newsstands everywhere, for an increased cover price of $3.99. Instead, days before their official publication, the pictures of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt cuddling their days-old infant first appeared on Gawker, PerezHilton.com and about two dozen other gossip blogs and Web sites. Some photos were taken from a bootleg copy of Hello! magazine, which had obtained the rights in Britain to the photos for a reported $3.5 million. Others that appeared later were from copies of People that the magazine says may have been stolen before official distribution. Within an hour of the first postings, lawyers for the magazine began unleashing cease-and-desist letters to the offending Web sites. But did the Internet publication of the pictures really undermine People's publicity plan? MORE ONLINE

CAFETERIA MANIA: There hasn't been this much frenzy over a new building in New York since, well, Conde Nast moved into 4 Times Square six years ago. But Hearst's newly completed headquarters building, designed by Sir Norman Foster, generated endless column inches last week, including three separate stories in The New York Times. The Times stories culminated in a Friday architecture review that praised the Hearst tower as a "muscular symbol of corporate self-confidence." All the attention prompted one fashion editor to exclaim, "Hearst is the new Conde Nast!" But the real question fashion insiders were asking last week had less to do with Foster's use of glass and steel and more with a simpler matter: How do the cafeterias stack up? Remember, Conde Nast's Frank Gehry-designed eatery, which reportedly cost $10 million, was for a time the hottest — and most exclusive — restaurant in town. MORE ONLINE FROM PAGE TO SCREEN: With the magazine industry sputtering, the temptation to decamp to greener pastures is growing. That's what former Elle publisher John Rollins is doing, signing on with a new Web television company called ManiaTV.com. Rollins, who was let go from Elle last month in a bit of streamlining, said Friday he had accepted a post as executive vice president of sales for the year-and-a-half-old venture. "When I knew I'd be leaving Elle, I felt I wanted to investigate the Web side of the business," said Rollins, who is also former group publisher of Vibe and Spin. "They really need a sales staff created largely from scratch, and that's what I'll be doing." Based in Denver (although Rollins will operate out of New York), ManiaTV was started by Drew Massey, the entrepreneur behind short-lived men's magazine P.O.V. Unlike Internet sensation YouTube.com, which relies on user-supplied content, ManiaTV has a full roster of original programming. A group of investors led by Benchmark Capital has put $15 million into the launch, said Rollins.

Targeting fashion-forward men is hard enough for publishers, but taking aim at stylish African American males has posed a bigger challenge. Hustler’s Larry Flynt published Code in 1999, but the magazine closed two years later. Since then, the genre has remained largely underserved, with men’s magazines barely touching upon the style sensibilities of African Americans. The range of titles include the more debonair offerings of Conde Nast’s GQ and Hearst Magazines’ Esquire—the monthly has named hip-hop producer Pharrell and musician Andre 3000 Best Dressed Men in the World—as well as the laddie-inspired King, published by Harris Publications, and Star Media’s Smooth. But now the publishers at Vibe believe there’s a market for an urban men’s fashion magazine somewhere in between the two extremes. In September, Vibe will debut V-Style, a stand-alone lifestyle supplement for progressive African American men that will cover the best in fashion, footwear, cars and spirits. The supplement will be polybagged with 200,000 copies of Vibe’s October issue, and mailed to Vibe’s male subscribers over 21. “V-Style is where they can come to learn about fashion and accessories—what’s the right cigar, the right wine, the right books to have in your library, not just the ones to say you’ve read, but the ones you should have read to transition from a boy to a man,”? said Len Burnett, Vibe’s group publisher. The gossip magazines are going gaga over Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's new bundle of joy. Brangelina's newborn takes front and center in this week's People, as the mag paid over $4 million for the North American rights for photos of baby Shiloh. The photos are actually tastefully done and show a seemingly happy family. We're sure People will also be the first to run pictures of Brad and Angelina's divorce proceedings. The mag is rounded out with pieces on Monaco's Prince Albert and his new love child and an interesting tale about a rescue at Mt. Everest. There's one good thing about Us Weekly: It doesn't have many pages and it doesn't take too long to get through. There's not much juicy gossip until you reach the middle of the book, where there's dirt on Nick Lachey's new squeeze and "Saturday Night Live" head writer Tina Fey's jump to a new NBC sitcom called "30 Rock." The issue also has some nuggets on the trailer-trash relationship of Brittany Spears and Kevin Federline, but it doesn't have much on the Brangelina story. MORE ONLINE ******* DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL: Brad Pitt may be reconciled to seeing his newborn daughter's face on every newsstand in America thanks to People magazine, but, for heaven's sake, don't ask him whether he cheated on ex-wife Jennifer Aniston with current lover Angelina Jolie. According to two well-placed sources, Pitt's publicist, Cindy Guagenti, was recently telling celebrity wranglers they would have to promise not to ask about certain areas of his personal life if they wished to secure him for their magazine covers. That raises the question of whether Esquire, which has booked the star for its October cover, agreed to any such restrictions. An Esquire spokesman declined to address the question directly, joking, "The only detail I can confirm is that he is not our mysterious "Sexiest Woman Alive.'" (He did confirm that it would be Pitt's first appearance on Esquire's cover.) MORE ONLINE DORN AGAIN: If you didn't get enough of Backpacker editor in chief Jonathan Dorn during his outr? acceptance speech at the ASME awards last month — after winning the Ellie for best magazine section, Dorn bussed Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker, then celebrated the physical attributes of his fellow Rodale staffer Dave Zinczenko — log on to Backpacker.com beginning June 25. Dorn will be audio-blogging as he attempts the Primal Quest, a 500-mile adventure race in the Utah desert. (This is apparently the sort of thing Backpacker editors do for fun.) "I'm packing a satellite phone to call in daily reports on our suffering," he said. MORE ONLINE AU NATUREL: Skin is in. At least, so hopes Thomas Lenthal, the French artistic director who consults on Yves Saint Laurent and serves as creative director of Paris' Numero fashion monthly. To test his premise, Lenthal, who is married to Dior jewelry designer Victoire de Castellane, plans to launch Paradis, an upscale general interest men's magazine peppered with female nudes. Known for his snappy dressing and witty repartee, Lenthal said the magazine, with an initial print run of 40,000 and advertisers like Cartier and Dior, was loosely modeled on the vibe of the iconic French gentleman's magazine Lui. Ad pages are 7,500 euros, or $9,600. "I loved the feeling of Lui in the 1970s," said Lenthal, who is self-financing the project. "There was this engaging mix of subjects, between journalism and photography." MORE ONLINE

W magazine's first-ever art issue is slated to hit newsstands in October, and will cover major artists, auction houses and dealers. Some may chalk this one up to a simmering rivalry between James Truman, the ex-editorial director of Conde Nast, and Patrick McCarthy, the editorial director of stablemate W. Truman is now the CEO of LTB Media, a company that has as its flagship Art & Auction. He's also introducing his newest magazine, Art & Culture, in September, but is said to be struggling to find ads. If nobody knows all your secrets quite like your doorman does, nobody knows a magazine quite like the dude who’s helping coordinate its move into a new office tower. A guy involved with getting the Hearst titles out of their old offices en route to the Foster building (but: “I’m not a mover,”? he assured us) has learned a lot from his experience — that Bazaar girls are gorgeous and self-important, that CosmoGIRL! chicks drink communal beer, and that there’s no way Hearst’s new digs will be as cushy as Rodale’s. We’re skeptical on that last point, but, still Not-a-Mover’s full report on the Hearst trek awaits after the jump. 1) Most of these people are movin’ on up. By and large the offices that are being vacated are disgusting on every level. Corporate grey-and-beige bland compounded by a lack of cleanliness that would give meth addicts pause. The one exception so far have been the former offices of Seventeen. Well designed and appealing. Looked like a cool place to work. 2) Everyone at Harper’s Bazaar is young, thin, and beautiful. I have never shared so few square feet with so many gorgeous women. That being said they were much more high-strung and self-important than the other Hearsters I’ve run into. But in the days since Rolling Stone magazine published a long piece that accused Republicans of widespread and intentional cheating that affected the outcome of the last presidential election, the silence in America's establishment media has been deafening. In terms of bad news judgment, this could turn out to be the 2006 equivalent of the infamous "Downing Street memo," the London Times story that was initially greeted by the U.S. media with a collective yawn. Robert Kennedy Jr.'s Rolling Stone mega-essay is titled "Was the 2004 Election Stolen?" It focuses on widespread voting irregularities, questionable tallies and disenfranchising practices, particularly in Ohio, which President Bush won by more than 100,000 votes. MORE ONLINE
